OUR CHINA JOURNEY - This blog is soooo late in being published.... but here it is. Once Cambodia was done it was time to get to China. We had bought a group tour from a company called China Spree. We had read a lot of good posts about them on the internet and we weren’t disappointed. Good company, nice people in our group, stayed at very nice hotels and ate at decent restaurants. 2 thumbs up for China Spree. We started the 2 week trip in Beijing. A very busy place with about 17 million people in the district and we only saw a small part of it. We checked into our hotel and went out to get a little exposure to China by wandering the shopping mall attached to the hotel. When you’re in a ... read more

Spoiler alert! Our China trip is now over, and we’re back- swine flu free and clear- to the grind of Korea. OK- undue the spoiler alert! I thought I’d wait a bit between entries so not to blog-overload everyone with our experiences in Beijing. Both Cass and I were looking forward to this day of our trip as soon as we made our reservations. Through our hostel tour company (that’s basically how trip arrangements are done here) we signed up to hike 10 km. of the Great Wall of China. The designated ‘Wonder of the World’ did not let us down. We met the small bus already loaded at 6:45 in the morning and settled in for the three hour bus ride to a more remote section of wall- we learned our lessons about the crowds ... read more

How can you go to China and not climb on the Great Wall? Early the next morning, we arose, shone and departed with our 7-person tour to the closest site, the town of Badaling. There are three good spots to experience the wall. Badaling is a) the one closest to Beijing, b) the best preserved/restored, c) the most overrun with tourists. That’s where we’re going. The Great Wall of China was built from the 5th century BC to the 16th century AD. It is estimated that 2 to 3 million Chinese lost their lives during the 2,100 years that it took to build the wall. It was originally built as a series of smaller walls by the individual tribes living in the northern provinces. It wasn’t until the 3rd century BC that the country was conquered ... read more

Today we woke early to take the 3 hour bus to the Great Wall. It was freakin freezing out so we brought the blankets that we borrowed from the airplane for scarves. We arrived around 9:30 am and began our hike. The trip we signed up for was a 5 mile hike from Jinshanling to Simata, the part that I unknowingly signed up for was the fact that the wall is composed mostly of uneven stairs. I never want to see another staircase again, unless it's moving! Anyway, as soon as we stepped onto the wall a little 65 year old Mongolian lady began walking with us telling us to be careful on the steep steps and trying her best to point out some history as we hiked. There were 30 towers on the 5 mile ... read more

Today I went to see the Great Wall at a place about 60km from Beijing which was called Baddaling. The wall is very impressive and at some parts it is extremly steep, I mannaged to walk about 2km along the wall and found an area with afew less tourists but I went with a Tour and our time there was coming to an end...I think if you had the time along the wall would be great for hiking at parts it is very steep and there are lots of ups and downs.... read more

Yesterday, Thursday, we went to the Great Wall. I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed to go to Badaling again... and the trip there - the jade emporium, the horrible lunch, and the asian-sized benches and melting ice cream - wasn't so great. But then we arrived! And, really, for a few hours, Badaling is as good as any. Since we went during the week, it wasn't very crowded, and since we were there in the late afternoon, most busses had already left.... My 3rd time to the Wall. Shanhaiguan with Syd and Brent in Jan '07, Badaling with Clo in April '07, and Badaling with Ben and Arielle in July '08. ... read more
