The part I was most looking forward to was our planned hike on the Great Wall that we booked through a local tour operator. I think before Covid, actual camping ON the wall was allowed, but this one only offered to camp next to it - still pretty cool. L set it up. We left our main baggage at the hotel and were picked up right on time at 10am. It would just be us - not a group tour. Yay! And they had a nice fancy volvo car to drive us the 90 minutes near the park entrance, where there is a little cultural center area here and seems to be a stopping point for lunch for many tourists. We had lunch here and there was so much food. Our guide, B, was pretty insistent ... read more

We take the bullet train from Xi'an to Beijing, a journey that will take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours. I am excited to experience what a bullet train feels like. In some ways, it feels like being on an aeroplane, as the seats have brochures and magazines in the back pockets and there are small TV screens in the aisle, and you are constantly being offered refreshments. I can't help but keep an eye on the max speed we are going as one of the screens in the carriage shows the current speed and I note a top speed of 306km/hr (approximately 190 mph). Once we arrive in Beijing, we gather together and take a private bus to a remote area of The Great Wall of China, known as Jinshanling's Great Wall. This mountainous area is ... read more

I apologize for being so behind in this blog and with pictures. We have very little down time and getting on the Internet is not always reliable. I will recount our day on Thursday. It was a very long day! We left the hotel at 8:30 after putting our checked bags out at 7:00. The sun was out and it looked like we were going to have a lovely, clear, warm day. Our first stop was at a fresh water pearl factory. Neither of us are fans of pearls but we did buy some " magic potion" made from pearl dust that is going to make us look many years younger. You won't recognize us when we get home. LOL! Next stop was the Summer Palace of the Emperor. This was a very enjoyable time as ... read more

After a restless nights sleep for both of us, we arose around 6 AM to a dull, rainy morning! Not good for the activities planned for today. We were on the bus at 8:30. The hotel sends a wake up call each morning arranged by our guide but we are always up before it rings. One of the couples in our group from Belguim did not get the wake up call and the guide called their room because they weren't on the bus. The lady got the call, thinking it was the wake up call and hung up. Of course Leo called back and told them we were waiting for them and they had been sound asleep and had to hurry to get dressed and get to the bus without breakfast, shower or hair brushed. What ... read more

It was good to leave Chengdu. We got up at 5.40am and I got ready to leave Chengdu for the bus to take us to the train, which was really exciting because 5 weeks is way too long. The Great Wall was super long. It is the longest wall I've ever seen. Although I think half of it was fake, it was really cool to see one of the 7 Wonders of the World. We went on a sun set tour and found out that the original wall was stuck together with some things including sticky rice. Part of the wall was lit up at night and it looked very cool. It was a once in a lifetime experience, thank you so much Yashoda, Lisa and Alan.... read more

Today I ticked something off the bucket list I officially claimed the Great Wall of China! If anyone tells you it's a long straight wall they are lying through their teeth! I have no idea how many steps I climbed but I know I was high enough to be terrified to look down. The steps in some areas where around 3 stones deep and giving that I have the smallest legs in the world I was practically climbing them like a child would a cube in a soft play area.... Very attractive. Having used the metal handrails to drag myself to the top of each flight of steps I soon found that I had transferred the rusted metal stains on to my dripping face where I had been wiping it on the way up wipes at ... read more

Carrying on with the 4th day of our tour of North Korea for the first time we actually left Pyongyang. This brought up some new rules - like you can't take photos of the roadway or countryside while inside the bus. But for some reason nobody batted an eye while we were out of the bus. We were driving to Nampo which is on the west coast, on our first bit of ridiculous North Korean highway. The highways are 8-10 lanes wide. No markings, no traffic, no maintenance, and very very rough. It's difficult to make any kind of decent speed as the vehicle is bouncing around and swerving around the roughest parts. The reason the roads are so big is to be used to move military equipment in case that becomes necessary. I had also ... read more

Today we are taken by coach to visit one of the highlights of the trip - The Great Wall of China. The weather is perfect - clear blue sky and just a slight breeze. The wall is 5660km in length and took 2000 years to complete . The section we visited is at Badaling and our guide advises us it is surprisingly quiet for the time of year it is a drive of 60km from Beijing. A cable car delivers visitors from the valley to a station a short climb from the wall. Watchtowers and battlements can be seen and the wall walked. It stands at an average of 7.8m and is surprisingly wide at about 4m. After lunch we head back to Beijing and dinner the speciality of Peking duck.... read more
