Greetings comrades - we're in the People's republic of China. It has been a very long journey to finding an internet cafe and it took a great deal of sign language and a team of 5 Chinese people scurrying around to get to the point of actually being online. We're now sitting surrounded by 50 000 Chinese youths playing computer ganes and there are no Westerners in sight. I tryed to plug my camera in so we could post some pictures, but after much changing of terminals and Chinese people crawling round on the floor not knowing what we were trying to do, I have given up! Will post pictures when we get home. So China - it's been really good, but much more difficult than New Zealand. In 11 days in China, we've done all ... read more

Hi, After an exhusting week of travelling from Yunan to Sichuan through monutains in elevation around 3,000 to 5,000 meters (though beautiful landscape and people), I have arrived to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. After no hot water, not to speak about running water at all, I have now good showers. After tempratures around zero, I got rid of my tiets, gloves, wool hat, etc. After Chinese people that they can hardly say more then 'hello', 'bye bye' and 'thank you', in the hostel here the people can speak fluent English. Life is much easier and comfortable here, in Chengdu. It is so good to be again in a big and a modern city. Its only problem is the polution. The sun, stars and moon are not seen, normally. In Chengdu, like in any other big ... read more

Without a doubt the second most lovely thing I have ever cuddled in my life! With my fuzzy bear left at home we headed off to the Panda Breeding Centre in Sichuan. Panda's are stupid animals...in many ways they deserve to become extinct. Too lazy to mate, too stupid to realise that their digestive system is made for meat and not bamboo and all they do is sleep. BUT...that first glimpse is enough to send you into overdrive. Although they do look very much like a man dressed up in a Panda suit, they are cute and fuzzy and everything you imagine them to be (and so much more). I really think having a live in Panda is the way forward. No more lonely nights when you have a panda to sleep with. I even think ... read more

Chengdu is a sprawling city and pretty unremarkable in its traits. All the cities all over the world do in actual fact look the same. Once you get used to the aesthetic differences (cows in the roads, tuk tuks careering around or spitting old men) there is not much to differentiate once MacDonald bearing town from another. Yes, it is clear we are glad to be leaving Asia behind. A little prematurely perhaps as China is probably host to the best things we have seen but probably second to India as it has the worst food. There is only so much rice and noodles you can eat. In fact, Lara is now surving on a diet of Oreos. Having given up on the whole staying thin whilst travelling thing, eating is becoming a good way to ... read more

A few years ago I traveled to Borneo to visit an Orangutan Sanctuary, set a few miles into the rain forest. A pleasant place where they use their limited resources to rehabilitate captured Orangutans, mostly young orphans, thanks to poachers, back into the wild. I was lucky enough, at the time, to have a close and personal encounter with a nursing female Orangutan and her baby, on a path in the jungle. This image fogged my judgment as I signed for a trip to "The Giant Panda Breeding Research Ctr." of Chengdu, in Southern China. THE GIANT PANDA INCIDENT The first impression I had, coming off the bus from central Chengdu, was of Sea World. The second was the San Diego zoo. A few minutes later, together with my group of some 26 other eager tourists, ... read more

So yesterday we went to the panda reserve after I last blogged. It was very neat, and very different than any zoos in the US. First we saw a bunch of red pandas, who were very curious and cute! The don't have glass separating you from the animals, just a hedge and than a trench between you and the animal. We got to get very close, maybe 10 or 15 feet from all the animals. The zoom button on my camera is broken (fortunately I can still take pictures) so the photos don't do justice how close I was, but it was very neat. Then we saw a 6 month old giant panda. One of the people that work there had put him up in a tree and he wasn't a very good tree climber yet, ... read more

Well, I have managed to arrive in China! I sadly left Koh Chang and headed to Bangkok on Tuesday. Tuesday night had a good dinner and a 1 1/2 hour Thai massage at Madame Joe's just behind Khao San Road, it was wonderful! Got up early Wednesday morning to get the airport bus. Flew to Kunming, where I bought a ticket to fly to Chengdu immediately. I hadn't been able to figure out how to use the phones, so I wasn't able to get in touch with the two people I knew in Chengdu. Fortunately I sat next to a very nice man who not only called my friends for me, he shared a taxi with me and took me to the hospital where my friend Ying works - Ying worked in my lab for a ... read more

Following day, get up a little later and then Susan...our second link teacher, who lives above us...knocks on the door and takes us up one flight to her appartment where a nice lunch awaits us to be eaten. We chat meet her husband eat food and then depart feeling rather full. Later we again find ourself shopping in RenRenLe. Then Victor, comes around a grade 3 student, so we eat dinner together and chat and then Victor leaves and well yeh that was about it...days getting a little less filled with things. Monday and Tuesday consisted of thinking of lessons plans, shopping in RenRenLe, me cooking a lot of food - Chinese and Western - reading books, watching TV and not doing a lot else really. Having a walk around the city of Zigong...yes it is ... read more

The 17th of February rolls around and the day has finally come to be taken off to my new school, to new places and to new experiences, and to somewhat have your life a little organised for you, which after a month of solid travelling making your own desicions being here there and everywhere when you want to be it is a little strange, but sometimes on the comforting side a the brain power gets taken away from you for a little while! So I checked out of the youth hostel in Chengdu...during my stay in Chengdu I didnt see much really figuring that I may be back a few times in the next 5-6 months! So the elusive Panda's will wait for another time!!...and made my way to the education building...which 2 days previously was ... read more
