So today- was pretty much the highlight of chengdu for me. On our way to Le-shan Mt (Giant Buddha) we made a pit stop at a tea harvesting farm, which was really pretty, although that was where I realized that I can barely walk anymore without having everything ache afterwards. At Le-shan Mt, where we viewed from a speed-boat for probably just 10minutes we got to wave at random people who were actually at the foot of the Buddha, and everyone started taking pictures of us- mostly because there were Caucasians on board. We went to Ermei Mt hotel, after- and had 2 hours of free time - so the majority of the group decided to get a 2hour body massages for 120 yuan which if you think about it is a really good deal considering ... read more

So, I think I finally have a beautiful trip to Tibet all worked out. Cross you fingers! We should get the military permits today to go overland from Chengdu all the way to Nepal. I will be in a land cruiser for 22 days with 4 other people I hardly know! Doesn't it sound exciting!!! And I am paying a fortune for it :-) So if you want to donate to the "Alanna would rather travel than get a real job" fund, feel free to send me a private message. I am happy to give my bank account details. Seriously though, we are going to see the printing press at Derge, the world's highest monastery and Mt Everest base camp. In the mean time, I went with Sander and Dave to see the giant Buddah at ... read more

Today we set off to Mount Emei (Emei Shan) 130km southwest of Chengdu. It didn’t start off too well (apart from the yummy BLT) we could not find the bus station, after an hour we finally found it!!!! So we boarded the bus, waited another 20 mins for it to fill up and then 2 hours later we were in Emei Shan. This place is one of the middle kingdom’s four famous Buddhist Mountains. Apparently the scenery is amazing here as well as the sunrise, we wouldn’t know though because all the time we were there it was misty!!!! On some rare occasions there is a phenomenon known as Buddha’s Aureole where rainbow rings produced by the refraction of water particles, attach themselves to a person’s shadow in a cloud bank below the summit. We didn’t ... read more

VIETNAM TO CHINA - (May 2007) Wed 16th May - (Sapa, Vietnam) At last my passport containing a Chinese visa finally arrived from Hanoi and thankfully only one day later than the travel agency had promised. Once I'd picked the passport up from the Sapa Mountain Hotel where I had previously been staying, the hotel kindly telephoned for a mini bus to take me to the Chinese Border. Unfortunately, in true South East Asian style, after picking me up from the hotel the bus drove around Sapa for another 2 hours trying to fill up before actually leaving town. However, once we had set off, the bus made good time and by mid day I was being dropped off at the Vietnamese/ Chinese border post just outside Lao Cai. CHINA (Hekou, China) Surprisingly, this proved to ... read more

I don't consider myself an experience traveller, I've seen some things around europe and even been to the highlands of scotland. But nothing has ever come close to what we've just been through. Shan is the chinese word for mountain, so for those of you who haven't figured it out yet emei shan is a mountain. For the people of China Emei Shan is just not another large hill, but the holiest buddhist mountain. And why they have chosen this as their most sacred became quite obvious, but we'll return to that later on. First we must begin with the beginning. It had been our plan all along to conquer a mountain, and from the desciptions we got from Emei shan the choice seemed natural. (writers note: after a beautiful trainride from xian we arrived ... read more

Jakos wstalem (9:00), choc dlugo sie meczylem - poza koldrami i spiworem bylo b. zimno.

No i w droge. Emei Shan jest niezwykle komercyjnie nastawiona na turystow - wszystkie szlaki to schody - idac nimi ciagle mija sie punkty gastranomiczne i 'kup-pan-mape', nie brakuje hoteli i to na kazdej wysokosci, nocleg tez oferuja praktycznie wszystkie swiatynie, ktore rozstawione regularnie na szlaku sa jedna z glownych atrakcji. (taoistyczne i buddyjskie). Ponadto droga na ... read more
