Monday -- Visiting the Teacher Training Center our site. Setting up the materials for the program. Meeting one of the local teacher volunteers. After a very long and tiring trip on Sunday we settled into our rooms at Lin Xian Hotel. I actually changed rooms the following day to a room across the hall that smells a little better and has more light and no leaky toilet, although the sink pipes are leaking...I guess you can't have everything. There is not so much noise on this side for some reason. Maybe it's because I didn't open the window -- but this room does face the parking lot so if there is a party, e.g., a wedding there is more commotion outside the window. On Monday afternoon there was a huge wedding with so many firecrackers going ... read more

Judy Manton and I finished our TESOL symposium yesterday around 5:30 and then in the lobby of the Jing Shi Hotel at Beijing Normal University we met Wendy Wen and her husband Brad and her brother and his wife. Brad and Wendy are visiting her family during July...we left NYC on the same day but arrived different times/days...we walked to a local student canteen on campus since we had some meal tickets left over and just made it in time to get a few dishes ...then went to this place that I found in the morning for coffee and a drink. It was a pleasant evening...not to hot not to cold and it was pleasant to see Wendy and Brad in a different venue. We went back to the hotel room afterwards...not too late around 10:30 ... read more

We finally arrived in Xi’an after drinking to much on a sleeper train. There was no time to rest as we headed on a private bus for about an hour drive to see the Terracotta army. When you first walk in it is simply amazing to see how large these pits are. That feeling quickly vanished for me when I received my first elbow to the kidney. The Chinese tourist do not like to wait in lines and I am certain they come up with plans ahead of time of how they will get in front. My favorite move was when I got the elbow to the kidney (which felt like a steel baseball bat) and I looked to my right to see a five foot 60+ year old lady. The second I looked though ... read more

Day 23 - Wednesday 13th April - Independent travelling really begins We spent the day cycling aroung the hutongs and back street markets; suprisingly enough no crazy food on sale here which suggests all the creepy crawlies on sticks are for good old gullable tourists. I then went for a cycle to Baisal Park and continued all the way around the Forbidden CIty...smog was really bad today...probably due to the factories been pumping out pollution for 3 days straight. We had some deep fried icecream for dinner...not the healthiest of options but it was sitting next to a deep fried, fried egg and chips. WHO is ordering that!? The calorific icecream was delicious! About 6ish we decided that we'd walk to the bus stop as opposed to changing buses. Its probably only a 15 minute walk ... read more

Yes, I have started my descent to the bowels of China, or maybe that sounds too frightening, so I should just say I am going south again. And yes, I know I said we, but I am using the editorial we, or maybe it is the Royal we, I will leave that up to you. Before moving in a general downward direction, I reached the northern most peak of my journey at this point in time in Harbin. I say at this point in time, because I am planning on returning to north-eastern China in June. Why? Because there are a lot of nature reserves up there which I want to see but which are still closed at this time of the year. So what was the use of going up to Harbin in the first ... read more

To get to Pingyao from Beijing we took the train firstly to Taiyuan, which took around three hours; we were able to book these tickets through our hotel in Beijing. Taiyuan, being the provincial capital with Shanxi, was as hectic as you could possibly imagine, and we fast became quite the spectacle in this place, especially with what they would have probably considered excessive baggage. Before too long we were off again for the second, hour long train ride. Somehow we had acquired top level sleeper tickets for the short ride, so I craned my neck and nestled between our backpacks on the top bunk (which was quite a struggle reaching as the bunks are three tiered), so that I could be out of the way and out of view from the curious local people, who ... read more

(Delayed blog) Me and my good friend Leo headed for the ancient, walled city of Pingyao for the October national holiday. We had originally planned to travel at least one way by train, but although Leo had tried on the first day possible to buy a ticket (10 days in advance in China), by the time he got to the ticket desk, all were sold out. (touts?) So we ended up with a return ticket on China Eastern airlines from Baotou to Taiyuan from where we were going to take a bus to Pingyao. We left on the 1st of October, the National Day of China, and landed safely with an hour delay at Wusu airport. On my previous trip to Wutaishan in Shanxi province, we'd flown into the same airport, so I knew the tricks ... read more

The next morning, after some quite reluctant waking up and a lovely breakfast from Ayi, we had a little wander before the minibus came at 11. By 11:25 it was quite obvious that no minibus was coming, so we set off on the 45 minute wander back down to the village, which was good fun, just strolling through the beautiful countryside singing songs. Eventually we ended up back in the village and caught a bus which, the driver assured us, was going to Pingyao... After a few hours the bus dropped us in a town and said that we should go to the train station as there will definitely be trains to Pingyao from there... When we arrived at the train station, after an exceedingly busy bus journey on a very over-capacity bus, there of course ... read more
