MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY !!! We took our first Chinese overnight train to Pingyao – one of the best preserved ancient cities in China. So far we only could see some modern city developments and we really wanted to see some authentic places. Hard sleeper was really good and comfy (150Y/15£ each). Could even say that it was of better standard than the Russian Platzkart that we liked so much. We arranged to stay in Harmony Guesthouse - Courtyard hotel with a lot of charm and great interior. They also provided pick up for free so we did not have to think about that when we got there early in the morning. Upgrade to a double en-suite room was a nice gift as well (100Y/10£ per room). We really got to like ... read more

Datong - Ancient Land of Buddhism The border crossing from Mongolia was in fact more interesting than the Russian-Chinese one. We had a lot of time and we could choose whichever option we liked. Obviously the most convenient way was to take the last leg of the Trans-Mongolian and go directly to Beijing but somehow we changed our mind after few weeks in UB. Maybe because there was almost nobody doing that or just maybe because we have heard about some nice places to visit in Inner Mongolia or Northern China. I should probably mention the enormous price difference between the train to the border and the Trans-Mongolian. I could say it is the advantage of this option that every backpacker finds very appealing ;-) The second decision was to go to Hohhot but after reading ... read more

The flight to Beijing from Seoul was uneventful. Gimpo Airport is only about 15 minutes on the airport subway line from my hostel in Seoul and the check-in and security process there was really easy. A few hours later I was landing in Beijing. Immigration and customs was easy as well - just show them the passport and visa and you are good. An airport express train took me pretty close to my hostel in Beijing. It was only a short walk from the station to the hostel, well it is supposed to be short. I ended up going in the wrong direction before realizing my mistake, but it wasn't too bad. I got to see a small part of the city and I didn't walk too far off course. The hostel - Sanlitun Youth Hostel, ... read more

More on that later though…The flight to China was pretty cruisy, we were only slighted delayed due a typhoon in the South of China. I was actually pretty surprised with the service on my flight with China Eastern Airlines. There were copies of the paper, two rounds of hot towels, plenty of food and a choice of wine all for free! It looked like I might miss my connection to Xian so I grabbed the nearest hostie and told him of my predicament. I was then immediately whisked up to business for the last half hour of the trip. There I enjoyed my massage seat before being let off the plane first and being whisked through customs to the next boarding gate. It didn’t actually matter though because the flight was delayed. Still I was grateful ... read more

Friday, July 29, 2011 We had a public lesson morning for teachers in our program. Several teachers from the 3 different classes prepared a public lesson and presented for the entire group of teachers. The lessons were quite good and instructive for all. Both my teachers who presented did an excellent job and I was delighted. One of the teachers -- Alice, who teachers at a senior high school -- did a very creative lesson about earthquakes -- a prereading and reading activity that provided scaffolding with vocabulary and ideas in the reading to help students understand and read the text more effectively. First she presented a song or poem that made students feel an emotional response and then she showed them pictures after an earthquake. Using the pictures she elicited a personal response from the ... read more

PingYao – The Ancient city and the journey from hell so far on this trip. For the last 3 nights I have been in the Ancient city of PingYao, the guide book describes it as the best opportunity to see “the old China in action, being possibly the best preserved ancient walled city in the whole of the country.” It’s fair to say it’s an ancient city and a million miles different from Beijing which was exactly what I needed. More on the city in a moment. As you will have read from my previous blogs I was reluctantly taking an internal flight between Beijing and Pingyao because I could not get a train. Having said that a small part of me was quite relieved not to have the hassle of the trains and buses and ... read more

Up early again to beat the dreaded tour groups to today's attraction; Heng Shan Hanging Monastry. Our lovely driver took us the 100+km round trip for little more than the public bus. Jutting out of the cliff on long stilts, the halls of the small monastery are built in contours of the cliff and connected with small stairways and corridors. From the top of the small rickety maze it appeared much further to the ground and Having been 'templed out' in Asia in the last few years this was a welcomed break from the usual and topped off what had been a lovely 24h experience of Datong...... read more

After a six hour train ride north west from Beijing we arrived in Datong, a much nicer city than The China Rough Guide describes; "Gritty polluted and unattractive there would seem little reason to visit Datong". We had a beautiful evening walking along the restored city wall taking in the children playing in the streets below and the signs of destruction and development on the horizon until we realised we couldn't get off at the other end and needed something more in our stomachs than the cup noodles we had on the train. We got in a taxi and Dani asked in Chinese for him to take us somewhere good to eat in his mind this was KFC! We ended up finding what i think has been the best meal yet, meat on a stick! Yummy ... read more

Yesterday and today have been spent getting ready for the beginning of the program. We reviewed all the materials. Judy went over many of the games and activities that she has on file with the assistants. She has a great deal of patience and enjoys going over every game in great detail. As she worked with them, I searched for the placement test --- began to develop a new one based on years past -- and then discovered the placement test and rubric that we had developed last summer. There were copies left over and there were also copies of the criteria for rating the oral performance so we will use that rubric. After lunch we returned to our teaching site at the Lin Xian Teacher Training Center and looked through the pronunciation materials and planned ... read more

Today we met with several teachers who will be attending the program, some of whom will serve as assistants and/or advisers to our teaching team -- perhaps they will be able to alert us if what we are doing does not really serve the needs of the teachers. Most of them teach in classes of 55-90 students...this is a real challenge for them and for us. We had a really nice lunch today at the hotel restaurant --- I wish that I knew the names of the dishes but of coruse I don't. Everything here is soaked in a sauce and most of the sauces are full of sodium -- part of the reason the dishes are so tasty. We went to a tea house yesterday and I bought the pu'ar tea and have been drinking ... read more
