Apart from one student in the program waking up in a random apartment in Pudong with two French girls who were just glad he was alive and not in a coma and who helped him pay for a taxi back to SJTU and him barely making it to the tour on time, that morning was uneventful - though I did go for a another run and cut my leg on something. First stop on the tour Saturday morning was at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre. We had a short tour of the place, seeing the history of the Bund, how Shanghai has quickly developed and grown, how the architecture in several districts has been changed or preserved, and plans for the future. I scanned around a little bit, but much of it was in Chinese, ... read more

Joey mentioned he was hungry around 6pm, so him, Brandon, Helen, Cherry, I and two other students headed out passing a bakery and then deciding to hit up the family style place we tried earlier. While trying to find it from a new route, we actually came across the most residential area I've seen yet in Xuhui. There were a few locals sitting out with Chinese checkers sets waiting for a component and a local market straight ahead. I'll need to grab some pictures next time, cause I've never seen anything like it before in-person. Cherry (from Taiwan) said it was just a regular market. There were at least a hundred different little stands and people out with food or other goods just laying on a towel on the ground for sale. I've seen several ... read more

This past week has been very busy with class and orientations. I also had my first Chinese cooking class where we made a very spicy beef tofu dish. It was delicious but the first cooking class was crowded and the kitchen was small so we cooked in groups of 4. Next week I should have a better chance for some hands on cooking since a large number of people decided to drop out of the cooking class. On Thursday one of the SJTU volunteers called Scott in our group and offered to take us to the Xuijiahui park, the public park for the area. When she invited us she asked, “You want to go the party and get a snake.” She meant go to the park and get a snack. Shanghai has many well maintained parks ... read more

Found out the club was actually within walking distance, at least for me, so I decided to go even if nobody else was down. But Brendan and Joey said they'd come...after a few drinks, then Sean and Matt decided to tag along too. I knew the general way to get there, but it ended up being about a 20 minute walk through some very convenient construction and what would be sketchy areas if guards weren't everywhere. On the way, I guy dressed in some hip-hop garments approached us, so me being way too distracted by the prospect of finding other bboys I said what's up, shook his hand, and asked if he was a bboy or was headed to the Shelter....bad idea, ha. He answered yes, but then in response asked if we wanted the ... read more

I woke up late today for the first time, couldn't go to sleep until about 3am, but Chinese 1002 was canceled so I found enough time to eat and get stuff done after Diff Eq. The only eventful thing to speak for today is the Martial Arts class. We met the instructor and gathered in the lobby of one of the older classroom buildings. Yu Wang acted as the translator for the master, he said that we were learning the Shaolin form of Wushu that is supposedly more used for performances than fighting (vs. Kong Fu) according to two GT LBAT students who had learned some previously (Dan and Austin). We learned 3 types of hand forms - the fist (which has 6 faces), straight (which has like 3 ways to use), and the hook ... read more

It felt like I didn't do too much today, but I guess I did. I had Differential Equations recitation around 8am and needed to have done some of the homework problems to follow along and ask questions, but I'll jump on that later...hopefully. I just messed around on my laptop, updating stuff, searching for events on shanghaiexpat.com and cityweekend.com.cn, catching up on this blog, and I finally finished converting ALL my music (after I deleted Itunes). Now I can listen to all of it, both on my laptop and my new Sansa - bboyin time is comin soon now son! And I know the event too, some Jazz and breakbeat night at a place called the Shelter, supposedly a renovated bomb shelter! Ethan, Ted, Sean, and I headed to Metro city for some food and ... read more

It wasn't hard to find my first class, Differential Equations at 8am, just missed it by one floor, ha. Professor Geronimo, one of the four horseman of the mathematical classes at Tech, is teaching it but he doesn't seem that impossible. Half of the SSP group is in the class. I could barely recall any Calculus, but I followed him decently, though 2 hours is a bit long. Afterwards, a large group of us hit up a bakery near a McDonald's. I bought a strawberry cream bun, some cheese bread, and a "meat pie". The bun was delicious, the meat pie just tasted like an apple pie, and the cheese bread was quite sweet - never had anything like it before. It appears that they just glazed a semi-sweet sugar coat over the entire bread. ... read more

Sunday morning - the lovely 5:37am sun, or rather 5:37am light because it's too smoggy to see the sun, woke me up again today. Scott and I met up with some of the other students and had some breakfast at a Chinese "fast-food" joint. I had some absurdly sweet tea with some egg and bread soup. Parker and Matt (two SSP'rs) had read about the Bund, "An architecture exposition of the world" that lies at the end of East Nanjing Pedestrian Road, the most commercially prosperous road in China with all the neon lights and endless shops/bars. It edges the Huangpu River where you could look onto the Oriental Pearl TV Tower (3rd tallest in the world)! It's a big tourist attraction, so we decided to head there for the day. We, including myself, Ted (who ... read more

So the first night (5/15) we arrived, Ted, Sean, Ethan, one other SSP'er (Shanghai Study Abroad student, forgot his name), and I decided just to walk down a few streets to check out a few restaurants and try to get a general layout of the streets. It was about 11pm when we left and there were still a substantial number of locals walking around, a few mopeders/bikers, and still several cars when we came back around 1:30am. We quickly learned how to cross the street in non-life endangering manner. We walked past, what I know now as, Metro Station and saw plenty of restaurants and shops down Guangyuan and Huahai Roads. There are an unbelievable number of different restaurants, small shops, and street vendors...it's insane. I didn't experience much jetlag, considering it is exactly a ... read more

Well, first I will have to apologize to my bloggies and myself (future self) for not taking pictures while on the flight, even though my camera was in my carry-on, I thought it'd be too much of a hassle. I also apologize, but this first entry may be wordy and boring - I have to adjust to a new writing style which will just take me a few entries. I packed two suitcases, both barely under 50 lbs. and stuffed quite ingeniously with things I probably could buy cheaper in Shanghai. My flight was KE 36, a connecting flight from Atlanta to Seoul to Shanghai. I was unsure what to expect accommodation-wise on the flight since I have only flown 2-3 times before and none even lasting a quarter of the time that the 14-hour ... read more
