So obviously I was here on Friday 6th but Disney had prebooked the whole day with filling out forms so I didn't really get to do much. But I'll catch you up. First night and day jitters After I had gotten checked into the hotel I was overwhelmed I guess with shock because as soon as the door to my room had closed and I'd managed to drag my cases in (sooo glad I left one at home because there's no way I would have managed on my own with 2 large cases a laptop bag, Rose and hand luggage), anyway as soon as the door had closed I burst out in tears thinking OMG what are you doing here Holly. After a quick chocolate bar I unpacked a few things to make the room feel ... read more

Today i am leaving hangzhou to shanghai! I am so excited to see the city and go exploring! I had a rough start this morning.. Slept through my alarm but woke up just in time. I was supposed to skype with my class but it didnt work out, i had just enough time to brush my teeth and cover my bags with my ponchos and head out the door. It is pouring today! I had a 25 minute walk, or should i say run walk, to the train station. I got all the way in the station until i realized i had to go back outside to another building to get my ticket. I found a bilingual window and watched countless people cut, its normal in china, but i patiently waited my turn. I am so ... read more

Happy New Year! It's been awhile since I posted, but I've been so busy preparing final exams and review materials for all my classes. It's hard to believe that my time "on the farm" is almost over. It's been an interesting semester to say the least. This past week, I had 10 days off for the New Year. I kind of lucked out with my schedule because most people had to work mid-week, but my three day weekends allowed me to have a huge chunk of vacation time. I decided to make the most of it and travel to Shanghai for a few days. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but the city totally blew me away! Shanghai is often described as the Paris of China, and I can really see why. The people are ... read more

Day 1 My Mom called me this morning just to wake me up. Thank gods she did, otherwise I would have missed my train and slept through everything! I guess she knows me too well, or just remembers how I missed that one flight, all too well... I still don't remember what time I got in yesterday; how I got into bed is also a mistery. And the hangover... don't even get me started... I'm thinking, maybe I should undergo an electro-shock treatment that will once and for all stop me from mixing vodka, wine, beer and so on, you know? It would teach me to grab only one sort of drink all night and zap me everytime I'd try to go for the oh-so-tasty Long Island Icetea. Or I don't know... Make me prefer water ... read more

For those of you who have followed our blog, you know we don't "Live the High Life" while we travel. We actually had never even heard of a hostel until we moved to China and were introduced to the website Hostel World. Thanks to Jason & Kathleen, this website helped us stretch our travel budget much further than paying for 2 to 4 star hotels around Asia. Our last month in China was quite crazy, we decided to treat ourselves to 3 nights at the Portman Ritz Carlton on Nanjing Xi Lu in Shanghai. For those of you that don't know Shanghai very well, this road is like the Fifth Ave of New York City or Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills. Every designer that you can think of has a shop on this road and there ... read more

When the feelings of being like Sisyphus finally lifted and changed into the feeling of being like Titan instead, everything finally started to fall into place. The initial summer plan was: Shanghai – Yunnan Province (1 week) – Vietnam (2 weeks) – Japan (Tokyo and Fuji Rock, 1 week) – Shanghai. Since I’ve had to abandon Japan, and my Yunnan plan was already complete, I thought, why not start from there and see what else I could fit into my itinerary. Before I realised it, I managed to include Guanxi Province. And well, I was hyped about Vietnam all along, so I began bulldozing through Lonely Planet’s “Southeast Asia on a Shoestring”. Those 2 weeks I mentioned before would not do Vietnam any justice, at all! The new plan became: Shanghai – Guangxi Province (~6 days) ... read more

DAY7-9: Hangzhou/Shanghai Today, we made the long drive back to Shanghai, where we visited the Bund and Shanghai Old Street (Cheng Huang Miao). I remember little more about this right now. We did also make our way back to see more of the same only and thus there is little to add here. We did later visit the Jade Buddah Temple, a 1882 structure with 2 jade Buddhas sent to China from Myanmar/Burma. I have been to Thailand and was not impressed. That night we were all off to eat local Shanghaiese food. And, they call it "cuisine"? The next day. we were free to roam about town. L had a friend who took us out into the city to see what we might not have seen otherwise, but we saw little more of real interest ... read more

Yesterday was a picture perfect day - blue skies with a hint of white cloud, unseasonably warm weather made even warmer by the bright sunlight. It was the perfect day to do some Shanghai exploring. A friend and I headed over to Jing'an Temple and it was the best choice we could have made. Jing'an Temple is a Buddhist monastary that was built almost 800 years ago. It now sits in the centre of Shanghai, on West Nanjing Road. It is surround by skyscrapers, traffic, and some of Shanghai's most expensive shopping. But as soon as you enter it, you forget that you are in the city. It's almost as if the temple is under a dome of quiet - within its walls the noises from the city fade away and you are completely focused on ... read more

Ok, the title is probably a little confusing because it's always me and Rachael, and I suppose all our of our weekends could be considered girl's weekends, but this felt a little different. Firstly, the main reason we were going to Shanghai was dress fitting, which is of course very girlie. Long story, but I had a dress to collect as well, which was a little nerve wracking but a good tester so we could see if the seamstress was any good. I didn't have high hopes for my dress but it was lovely. It's a kind of silky material with black and pink circles on a white background. The neckline is great, flattering but not revealing so I can wear it for work. It's a bit of an odd length for me, but I can ... read more
