Whoops I forgot to put this one in! I think more people were looking at the strange westerner holding a Koala up for this photo that at the actual warriors. Pretty amazing detail in these guys hey! It took over four hours to walk the great wall, we nearly got thrown off of the side by guards when someone didn't want to pay one of the toll. Don't mess with those dudes man!!!... read more

June 5 Doesn’t quite conjure up that melancholy mood that Brook Benton gave, “Rainy Night In Georgia”. Gray, steady rain as we exit the train station. Taxi touts try to get our attention but I’m ahead of the game and see the legitimate taxi queue; we scurry to get a spot in line. A Chinese lady is lured by a tout - then shouts at him because she is taken to a taxi that is about 10th in line. And she thought she was getting the royal treatment! The overnight “Z” train was pretty nice, but still had a sour smell. Cabins were nicer in this newer one, built in TV screens, and it was much cleaner than the “T” train to Beijing, but still no privacy curtains. Excellent deal for only Y417 ($50US). Why is ... read more

Our last few days in beijing were minus touristy, they mainly involved us getting drunk, singing, getting drunk, breaking tables, more singing, and getting drunk. The day after our great wall trek we sat around alot and eventually got ourselves together and went to tianamin square. saw a few of the sights then came back to the hostel and invited a few swedish girls out with us that night. In the end up most of the hostel came out with us cos they'd heard dermy was taking us to a chinese rock and roll place with live music as recommended by his chinese friend. so there was about 20 of us, irish, swedish, english, israeli, danish and german all expectin some real chinese culture but when we got there it was just some bar full of ... read more

After a fantastic week in Beijing we reluctantly got on our flight to Xian. We were quite sad to leave the capital as it had become one of our favorite cities this year, but onward we must travel. Xian only has one major attraction, which is the 'Terracotta Warriors' and otherwise it is not a particularly attractive place. The people here were very friendly as we found out when we were stuck in the middle of the road with our backpacks in the middle of rush hour with no taxi's wanting to take us to our hostel. A Chinese girl approached us from a car and asked where we were trying to go, she spoke very good English and offered us a lift in her boyfriend’s swanky car, not bad we thought and jumped in. It ... read more

Well cyber hitch hickers we are safe and sound and back on the air at least for the moment.I am sitting in a hotel at the Xi'an airport. Our 4:30 flight has been delayed till 7:30 so they have given us a room and hence internet access. Interesting feature in the room the usual toiletries are here including comb and slippers but this one featres mens briefs and socks as well. Not sure of the cultural significance to that but can imagine a number of things from very acccomodating for travellers diahorrea to some afternoon delight with a concubine.Anyway I am not sick and married so won't need a change. Not likely to fit anyway. We left BOb'and Nadias yesterday and as we drove to the train station marvelled at the red sun shini9ng through the polution in Beijing. The ... read more

Today's entry has something that hopefully you'll find pretty funny, but you might also find a bit disgusting. So, if you're about to eat lunch, or you just had your lunch, be warned... We had a good few days in Beijing and now we're in Xian which is about 1200km SW. Last night we took a night train, first class baby! It was pretty lux and the train was very very modern. We shared our cabin with 2 Chinese business-type-persons. From the guidebook and prices we gather that only foreigners, party officials, and successful entreprenuers can afford to take this class. It was nice and we got good sleep. For the record, neither of us has ever seen a train station as large as the Beijing West station. As the taxi passed it it on the ... read more

Hello all. Just time for a quick posting here before my hour of internet runs out. First, thanks so much for all the comments. I am more or less freely 'posting' them on the site, so if you just have a persona message for one of us that you don't want posted (something like, I miss you so much schoooky wookums or some kind of memory of fraternity hazing, just note this in your comment and I won't post). On the subject of comments, one of these days I hope to be able to go through these and respond. To those folk interested in Club Masa, in Fji, go at your own risk and look out for the short indian ex con. Will keep you up to date on other good stuff that we find along ... read more

We're now in Xian. and are now leaving Xian. Got here 2 days ago and the only train we could get to our next destination, Shanghai, was for today so we're forced to high-tail it out. Pretty nice town-- large-- I think they say population of 4 million. We've seen a few familiar faces from Beijing so it looks to be we're all rolling the same number on the dice. The last day in Beijing was spent at the Antique Flea Market where they have the absolute best deals on artwork, antiques, sculptures and knicknacks with no need to haggle...though I still tried to. They had these little red books of quotes and speeches by Mao that I had seen all around (the "Little Red Book") and I thought it'd be an interesting read. At the ... read more

Thursday, September 8, 2005 Weather: Clear Temperature: Warm in Chengdu, cooler in Lhasa. We are about to arrive in the mysterious land of Tibet, clearly the most adventurous portion of our trip. Our flight was on China Air that left on schedule at 10 a.m. for the 90 minute trip. This time we were on a Boeing 757 and our group was seated in the very back of the plane. Every seat was filled and the overhead bins were crammed with every imaginable form of luggage. The Lhasa airport is quite new and modern but it is located about one hour bus ride from the city. The area is mountainous and it is necessary to have a long runway for takeoffs at such a high altitude so locating the airport in a large flat area was ... read more
