Wednesday, September 7, 2005 Weather: Sunny. Temperature: Quite warm - high 80's to low 90's. We had an early start today as our stay in Xi'an was only for one night so bags had to be out for collection before going to breakfast. The Shangri-la serves a delightful buffet breakfast with an omelet station, lots of fruit and a nice selection of breads and pastries. Our only stop in Xi'an was to visit the Terra Cotta Warriors Museum. The Museum is located at the site where the farmer digging a well back in 1975 came upon this discovery that has since marveled the world. It is located about 1 hour from Xi'an by bus ride. As we approached the area our local guide pointed out a hill in the otherwise level landscape and told us that ... read more

Free Morning The morning was free…so I decided to sleep in a bit and work on the blog. The internet connection at the hotel was a little slow, so the uploading of the pictures took forever. I only had enough time to upload my pictures for Beijing. Han Yangling Museum The Han Yangling Museum is the home of the archaeological site for the mausoleum of Western Han Emperor Liu Qi (ruled 188 BC - 141 BC). The mausoleum itself hasn't been excavated, but a few of the ruins in the area have been. Excavation of the various sites started in the 1970's, and in 1999 the museum was opened. It seems that the different Emperors of China liked their pottery armies. Although not as majestic or large as the Terracotta Army, Emperor Liu Qi did commission ... read more

Silk Factory So this is where my budget went in the trashcan. I resisted buying a replica Terracotta Warrior (mostly because I had no place to put it)…but I couldn’t resist a nice Silk Carpet. The quality of the carpet is based on the number of knots per foot (top quality carpets have 500 knots/foot, which works out to 600 knots/square inch). I ended up buying a 7.5 foot by 2.5 foot, 500 knot carpet, which took two people two years each to make (works out to 1.62 million individual knots)…as each knot is tied individually. The carpet is a classic landscape picture of life during the Tang (I think) dynasty. There goes the raise this year… Great Mosque/ Muslim Bazaar Wikipedia Information As Xi’an is the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, it has a ... read more

General information on Xi'an, one of the ancient capitals of China. It is pronounced like See-Ann. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Xi'an, which was good, but not as nice as I was expecting. In fact, the rooms were in a little disrepair and sparsely furnish. What I wouldn't give for the beds at the Hyatt Jersey City. Luckily, I didn't break the tub here though. Our tour guide in Xi'an was Echo, a spunky 28 year old married girl. Echo is cute as a button, and got most of our sarcastic humor. She was very knowledgeable about all the sights, but did have a little trouble answering some of our impromptu questions. Echo was also a bit more regimented than Rose, and was all about keeping us on schedule, which I didn't mind. Another busy ... read more

When one of my colleagues approached and asked me if I wanted to go on a trip to Xi'an with my chinese students, I thought it would be fun and agreed. The school was going to pay for all the expenses - and I thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know my students a little better. Little did I realise - that it was going to be one of the most exhausting trips of my life. We travelled thirteen hours hard seat to Xi'an. Which wasn't too bad - just not too good either. I managed to get a little sleep - maybe about two hours or so. I was looking forward to getting into the hotel and resting. When we got into Xi'an - we were rushed into a tour bus ... read more

I had high hopes for Xi'an (meaning "western peace"), it being the ancient capital of several Chinese dynasties. It was in Xi'an, then known as Chang'an (meaning "lasting peace"), that generations of silk road traders ventured, from as afar as Rome and Persia. In short, it was the cradle of Chinese civilization. Its city planning pattern was also copied throughout China. I flew into Xi'an Airport from Beijing, and took a bus from the airport to the train station. Once again, commercialism has taken over. What I thought was public bus turned out to be privately owned, and onboard the bus was a ticket vendor, who did a nice job of introducing the Province of Shaanxi. After that she asked everyone individual where they were going and if they already booked a hotel. I hadn't, but ... read more

Xi'an The term underground warfare takes on a new meaning in Xi'an, China's former and ancient capital. You may remember from my , the story of Emperor Qin Shihuang or First Emperor who lent his name to the Qin Dynasty and to China itself. Qin was incredibly successful as an iron-fisted ruler in the 3rd Century BC but failed miserably in his quest for immortality. Xi'an is the place where farmers drilling a well in 1974 discovered one of the immense underground chambers containing battalions of Terracotta Warriors guarding Qin's tomb. There are thousands of life-size, individually hand-crafted ceramic soldiers, including infantrymen, archers, officers, generals and even horses. Most have yet to be excavated. The scale of this archeological site is mind boggling. Some of the swords found with the warriors were coated in chromium to ... read more

9:00am, Still at Xi'an I've got to get outta here. But according to all the travellers i've met, its impossible to get a comfy ticket out of Xi'an. I wanted to try anyway. I just realized i spent 5 days here and thats too long. So, after a hefty long breakfast i made my way to the train station. 11:00am, Xi'an Train Station Great. Their english is poor but my mandarin is atrocious. It took me 30 minutes to figure out to say "i need a to get on the next train to lanzhou, ill take whatever seat or bed i can".. Finally, i think they figured me out and sold me a HARD SEAT (which is horrible) ticket to Lanzhou at 6:00pm today! Which means i'll be arriving at 4:00am. I didn't care, tickets were ... read more

11:00am, Youth Hostel. Yesterday, i was the local performer. I went down to the bar and performed for thirty minutes. I was an instant celebrity amongst the mat sallehs. As i walk down the hall with my towel over my shoulders, everyone i passed said "hello" to me. I think it is time for me to leave though. I am getting too comfortable here in Xi'an. I tried to book for a ticket from the hostel reception to Lanzhou but the trains are all booked due to the summer holidays. My feet was still sore from the hike and i decided not to push myself too hard today and take it easy. 1:00pm, Youth Hostel After having breakfast i went to marts room and together me, mart and this other australian lady thats in her 50's ... read more

Hi everyone... Sorry i haven't got some pics up yet, impossible to find a computer here with cd-rom .. they are seriously paranoid about internet here, its beginning to drive me mad. We arrived in Xian .. our last stop before Beijing. We spent 3 nights there which was great and finally back to good accomodation!!! although we were just getting used to the monasteries (says gareth). Our first day in Xian we went to see the famous Terracotta Warriors which was really amazing to see. Hopefully i will get some photos up of them. It was full of american tourists who were trying to buy the warriors which was quite amusing!!!! The next few days in Xian we pretty much chilled and didn't really do much sightseeing. It was shopping heaven really and i spent ... read more
