I had high hopes for Xi'an (meaning "western peace"), it being the ancient capital of several Chinese dynasties. It was in Xi'an, then known as Chang'an (meaning "lasting peace"), that generations of silk road traders ventured, from as afar as Rome and Persia. In short, it was the cradle of Chinese civilization. Its city planning pattern was also copied throughout China. I flew into Xi'an Airport from Beijing, and took a bus from the airport to the train station. Once again, commercialism has taken over. What I thought was public bus turned out to be privately owned, and onboard the bus was a ticket vendor, who did a nice job of introducing the Province of Shaanxi.
