Finally! Some time for real adventure! Tonight Helen and I are taking the train to Beijing. Great Wall tomorrow and Tain'anmen Square the next. I can't frickin' wait! Of course, when I get back, I will post pictures. I heard the Chinese Art Gallery there is not the best, but I'm curious to see what it's like so I hope we can make a stop by there at some point. I need an art fill like you wouldn't believe. BUT! Best day of my time here so far...I found an art store! So I got some canvases and paint and brushes and a brand new palette. The best part, I'm sure you can guess, is that it is soooo cheap! I have been sketching in between classes to satisfy my itch so I'm ready. Two more ... read more

So if there is anything I hate in China it is the damn mosquitoes that NEVER GO AWAY. There are nights that I literally don't sleep because of the biting and the itching and the buzzing in my ear. I have taken up being a mosquito hunter by day, trying to creep up on them as they rest on my walls. But those suckers are fast! They're smart. Probably from sucking the blood of their fellow smart country dwellers, the Chinese. The first two days I was here, I had 17 bites just on my arms alone. Now, I can't even count. And yes, we got bug spray and mosquito zappers, but nothing seems to ease the situation for long. Because of this reason alone, I cannot wait for it to get cold here. The nights ... read more

Week 2? Week 3? I can't seem to keep track. The days blur together and apart. We do not have a calendar even though every day we say, we need to get a calendar! I like this laissez faire schedule, where I don't need to worry about what day it is, or what month for that matter. I just worry about time. I am still on two different time zones, trying to keep in touch with family and friends. I do get all your emails and messages, even if I don't reply. I am reading and am always so happy to see new messages. :) So to catch you up on somethings...teaching always brings new delights. Today, I got a really awesome feel-good feeling in the middle of a lesson. I genuinely laugh in class, whether ... read more

I taught a new public school today, which I didn't really like. I didn't get to meet any teachers because I was taken to my classroom and left there all day. Generally, I am escorted to a room by my assistant, a translator, who is with me the entire time I am at the school. Today, I was not given an assistant and had to fend for myself. Usually, it wouldn't be so bad, but my classes were about 70 students who didn't understand a lot of English so they wouldn't listen and talked almost the entire time I was teaching. It was really hard to teach, needless to mention, frustrating. So my first class was ok. At the end of class though, I was rushed by 20 students who wanted my autograph. At first I ... read more

So I just finished my second day of teaching at the first public school. All in all, it went very well. It is a little less structured when it comes to starting class on time, but I am learning to adapt to it. However, today I was watching the kids during their recess and found it somewhat entertaining. The boys like to play some game where they stand in a circle and clap their hands and then do some sort of hand gesture to each other until someone gets it wrong...or something. They also like to fight. Literally, fist punching in the face and in the gut, rolling around on the ground. And no one stops them. The little girls run around chasing each other. Either they're playing tag or they like to chase each other ... read more

Disclaimer: These photos have nothing to do with entry. They're from a past entry, I think. I swear I'll figure this out soon... Everyone! I am alive. We finally got working internet...I think. Yesterday we went to Shenyang to get a physical exam. This was required once to get the visa in San Francisco and apparently, once more in China. They did chest x-rays and an ultra sound as well as blood and urine tests, among the other basic stuff. Every kind of test was in it's own office and we just went from one to the other, like other foreigners there. We got done in 40 minutes. It was fast and efficient and not really expensive. However, there is no privacy. At all. We spent a huge part of our afternoon cleaning our apartment. We've ... read more

(Just realized I hadn't published this...) So our internet is down and it makes it really, really hard to update and email. It's also been tough not talking to my family. I miss you! Currently, I am at the office in the school while all the other teachers are in class. I had my first class yesterday. I have six students, ages 12-16. They are pretty advanced and can carry on a conversation pretty well. I don't know that this will be one of MY classes yet. David, my boss, doesn't know either. Things are very laxed here. It's kinda nice, but it sucks not knowing what to prepare for. Our teaching schedule goes like this: Saturday and Sunday, classes go from 8:30 am to 7:30 at night. They're like the Monday and Tuesday back home ... read more

With the new school year in full swing, it has been time for some of my older students to fly their strictly controlled parents’ nest and venture on to the freedom of far-flung university destinations. Being their resident English teacher, such an occasion has two benefits. Firstly I have a reduction in my teaching schedule. Having a manager driven by greed, I’m sure this will only be temporary. Secondly, it also means plenty of invitations to banquet style feasts to celebrate the students’ successes. It’s always an honour to be invited out with a students family, where the industrial size ’Lazy Susan’ is over-flowing with a multitude of dishes. Like a duck being prepared for foie gras the family force feed me until I’m ready to explode. If there are male members of the family present ... read more

The other day, a girl from here took us around the city for a short tour. First, we went to the children's park, which isn't just for children. This park is amazing. It has workout stations that old people actually use. A lot of people frequent the park. Some just sit while eating pastries that remind me of Mexico. Others sit around concrete tables and play cards or Mahjong. It was great to see. They get really into it and yell something in Chinese as they throw a card down. I can only imagine what they might be saying. At this park, there is also a Chinese Opera. That's what Brooke called it. A lady was singing inside a corridor and people lined it watching and listening. Men fanned themselves with traditional Chinese fans, the ones ... read more

Coming from a country famous for its grey skies, dull days and copious amounts of rain, China’s wet season should have been something that, if nothing else, reminded me of home. Although I have experienced wet seasons before, never before have I seen such intensity for so prolonged a period. It’s no surprise that after days and days of virtually continuous torrential precipitation, parts of the province has seen flooding and evacuations. In Benxi, roads have become raging torrents of water. Even school has been cancelled. Extra days off work is sadly about the only positive from such weather. With sewage and drainage systems unable to cope with the extra volume, it has left the sweet aroma of sh*t in the air and sewage in the streets. Trying to navigate the streets without covering your feet ... read more
