I will explain a little about the school and my surroundings today. You can see by the map where things are located. The school also has a northern campus that houses some students, but most are here. I will only be teaching on this campus, at least for first 10 weeks. You can see the campus outline in Green. The map shows a large undeveloped area about the middle of the campus, and just slightly to the right. This area is now a paved area with a track. I have included a couple photos of the surronding area so you will understand my descriptions bet in the coming weeks. ... read more

This one is going back to the night I arrived in China. Luckily I am on the 2nd floor which means I only had to lug over 100 pounds of luggage a short distance. I unpacked just enough to get a change of clothes and realized I packed no shampoo or soap (other than a small bottle of hand sanitizer from Aunt B). I searched the apartment and found a bar of soap. The Chinese are so thoughtful. So I am ready, get into the bathroom and take a close look at the shower. I am greeted by the 3 knobs. With no labeling what so ever. Check out the picture. And strangely there was a large red bowl in the bottom of the shower laying upside down. On arrival we were introduced to a young ... read more

I arrived in Bejing without anything exciting happening. I had 3 areas to clear on my arrival. First there was a Quarantine area, which consisted of walking past an infared camera that measured your temperature. I was fine and proceeded along to a desk where my quarantine pass was stamped. Next, I was immigration where they checked my passport, visa, and quarantine clearance card. I collected my bags and cleared customs without a problem. I was greeted by a young man with a sign with my name. We proceeded to the Air China Counter for my ticket and then it was on to my gate and waited to fly to Changchun. While waiting to board I wandered around some and this is when it hit me for the first time. I have no idea what any ... read more

Continued... We were feeling more comfortable with Fa after he took us to the train station and finding out he had a son, 18 who lived in a nearby town. We drove through a forest and eventually made it to the park entrance. When we arrived he had some friends of his join us, they were there to sell us something but we ignored them and moved towards the admission area. Trying to leave Fa behind we were unable to shake him and we arranged to have him pick us up after we were finished at the park. After paying the 100 yuan plus 68 yuan for the bus ride we entered the park and joined the other tourists for the ride into the park. We got to our hotel and decided to head where tourists ... read more

From Harbin we headed east towards Korea with our final destination being Changbai Shan. Changbai Shan is a Mountain and National Park and is also a spiritual place for the Korean and Chinese cultures. We took a bus in the early morning from Harbin to Jilin (~ 4 hours). Mostly we passed drying Corn fields along the way. The air didn't get any better either. We had a nice stay at the Home Inn in Jilin and went for Mongolian hot pot again. The people here were especially friendly. A boy named, Mike, introduced himself to us, I guess wanting to practice his English. The next day we caught a bus to Songhua lake, a large lake dammed at edge of Jilin. The next day we caught the afternoon bus to Yanji. This ride was mostly ... read more

Hey just wanted to keep you all posted with our plans and current location. We are currently in Jilin which is in, duh, Jilin province. We spent the last few days in Harbin checking out the city and are turning our heads towards China's National Park and Border with North Korea, ChangBai Shan. We don't plan to go to the DPRK but there is a pretty interesting tourist area in that area that we are hoping to check out. There is more to come from Beijing and from Harbin. We'll try to post in the next day or so. Talk to you again soon.... read more

Sorry it’s been so long since the last edition, ive recently returned to the University life and have been somewhat busy with the location shuffle. Anyway on the bright side this is the final edition so those that have stuck it out this far, wont have to tolerate my jibber-jabbering for much longer! The Return My intention hadn’t been to write a blog about my return trip as I expected it to be similar to the outbound journey; however fate had other plans for me. The original idea had been to get a seat on a train for the trip to Beijing. Sadly after numerous visits to the ticket office 3+ days before the train departed - this wasn’t to be, it seems in China that if the train station isn’t where the train originated from ... read more

Randomness! This week’s edition is just full of stories and wisdoms that I wanted to tell but didn’t fit into any greater category and have no particular order, ill also shove afew pictures up which may bare no resemblance to the text. Sorry if it all seems abit scrappy! Brenda’s The main social spot for the academy is 'Brenda’s' which has multiple purposes with roles including shop, bar, storage and mah jong central. There’s even a bed in the bar where Brenda’s son Mickey sleeps, often during drinking sessions which can be boisterous making it an impressive achievement for the child. While rather odd im reliably informed that in time you become accustomed to the presence of the sleeping child. By English standards the prices here are dirt cheap with coke costing roughly 25p a ... read more
