I have a week off from teaching, so I took a trip to Harbin for the weekend. I went with my girlfriend Lisa. We left from the Changchun train station on Saturday and returned by train on Monday evening. We set off after lunch for the light rail train to the cities major train station. There was a warning at the entry to the light rail Lisa translated "If the first train is too full, please wait for the next. We will not issue any refunds due to overcrowding". My height guaranteed access to "fresh" air at least every time the train doors opened. Many others were not as fortunate. We arrived at the train station and found out waiting room nearly as full. You can get an idea from the picture I have included. The ... read more

It was last Sunday, the last day of the Spring Festival. Just before I left China, in late January, I kept hearing about fireworks for Spring Festival. I thought it would be great to stay and watch, but my return flight was already scheduled. Lucky for me! I made it back for the last day of the festival. The video does not do justice for the pandemonium. For readers who have been in a war zone, I imagine the sounds are similar. There were periods where I felt a little in fear, but for the most part it was entertaining. Throughout the day I heard firecrackers echoing off the 11 story apartment buildings nearby, but for the most part the afternoon was calm. At sunset I set off to meet a few friends for dinner. As ... read more

Hey everyone! I haven't updated in a very long time-- so this is going to take a while. Where should I start? How about at Thanksgiving? Well, we had a Thanksgiving party at our place and invited all of our coworkers. There were about 25 people there, and most people brought food with them. I made a turkey (that was HUGE-- seriously the biggest turkey I have ever seen), stuffing, green bean casserole, and gravy. Everyone loved the food and had a good time. :) Before Christmas, we went skiing/snowboarding for the first time. I was skiing, Michael was snowboarding. It was so much fun! I only stayed on the easy hill, but it was awesome, and I would like to actually learn how to ski better. Michael had a tough time with snowboarding-- it's really ... read more

"It is cold in Changchun in the winter, be sure to bring enough warm clothes." This statement is very clear to me now. It might sound crazy, but a understanding the word "Cold" is key to understanding this statement. I just woke up. It is 6:22 AM here. All night I was sleeping in a warm bed under a heavy blanket, in a small room with an electric heater. I expect most of the rest of my day will include an ongoing battle against cold. For those of you in US states with snow on the ground.....very few of your will actually understand this, because you have way too many things around to prevent cold. Cold means, getting out of bed and stepping onto a warm wooden floor. Why is the wood floor warm you might ... read more

On the way back from breakfast today, I was reminded of one of the special Chinese customs that I have not written about up to this point. I thought it would be good to write about it before it seems to mundane to me. I see it everywhere, except in my classroom. On the streets, in the hallways, and some market areas. In fact many times just the sound of it reminds me of what we are missing in the US. So today as I was walking back to the teachers buidling from the dining hall. There was a Chinese woman walking toward me. She closely resembled one of our building supervisors. So I wanted to say "Good Morning" but also wanted to make sure it was her. As she got closer I realized this was ... read more

Today is the second day of my 1 week break. October first is celebrated as the first day of the People's Republic of China, and this year is the 60th anniversary. Some of you may have seen huge parades in Beijing on the evening news. So in celebration of this we are off school for 1 week. Later today I will be flying with a few other teachers to Shanghai. I should have some good stories and experiences to report on my return. For the past 5 weeks I have been teaching. It is a continual balancing act of keeping all the students involved in class. Well those who want to learn. As in any classroom, there are a few students who seem to simply refuse to pay attention or dedicate any effort into learning. In ... read more

Because the whole group (consisting of all the international students) wanted to make a trip to Changbai Shan, and because the place is not easily accessible without transport, the Chinese students proposed to go on a trip organized by a tour organization. In the end, unfortunately none of our Chinese classmates could join us on the trip. Especially I was a bit sceptic towards the whole Chinese way of going on tours, but because it is the only option to visit Changbai Shan and because everyone was joining I decided to participate. Of course, it is also part of the Chinese experience to go on a real Chinese tour... The nine of us went by taxi to the train station of Harbin, which was crowded as always. The woman from the travel agency, recognizable due to ... read more

"Please meet Thursday at the adminstration building to board the bus for the medical exam.." This informative note greeted us on the teachers bulletin board one afternoon. Thursday arrived and we board the bus for the medical exam. There are many things I wanted to experience here but a medical exam was not one of them. On the bus ride to the Changchun Tourist Medical Exam Center, I heard two conflicting stories. Some teachers who had the exam before said it was more revenue based than a true medical exam, others said it was extremely invasive think "full cavity check" and multiple samples. We arrived at the center without accident. There was a near miss with a taxi in which our bus driver swerved at the last minute to save the day. He came to a ... read more

Last Wednesday I had a dinner that I won't soon forget. It was the "Chinese Valentine's Day". Come to find out it wasn't celebrated by many Chinese in this area. It was advertised in Wal-mart, well I think that was the advertisement, I big end display of chocolates in heart shaped boxes. Well anyway I was getting sick of eating the food that I prepared.....anyone guess what I have been eating..............Noodles. Not Ramen, unless that is what the Chinese characters mean. I have also been eating some fruits and vegetables, the ones that I recognize. I just can't seem to buy the chicken wings from the huge tub in the aisle at Wal-Mart. I would take pictures if it didn't seem so tourist. I mean really, when is the last time you took a picture inside ... read more

At the time of writing this message it is Friday at 3PM here. I finished week 1 out of 10 this morning at 10AM. Let me tell you how it went: Monday- I didn't not have class, but I spent about 1 and a half hours preparing a couple powerpoint presentations to go over in class. I thought these would take me through most of the 4 hours of instruction I had scheduled on Tuesday. Anyone with teaching experience (I had none on Monday) will see the humor in this. Now I know why many of my teachers in school were in the same subject they had taught my parents, who wants to spend every night, weekend, and most the summer preparing lesson plans. So then at about 10AM on Monday I was done for the ... read more
