…..I am starting to get myself organised as we move into the 4th week of teaching. Little things like having a supply of tea & even coffee for when Peter comes round once a week for a music session. Arriving later than the other teachers when I came from Australia didn't help & being illiterate in the supermarket means that I either buy the wrong thing or take much longer to find items. Frequently both..... …..talk of a trip to Hunan province in the South West for the October break.....air fares too expensive (a return flight well over ¥3000) & train journey too long (it's over 3000km). So, in the 1 week holiday starting next Thursday, it looks as though I'm in a small group thinking of heading for Chongqing, about 35 hours by train from ... read more

…..Saturday evening, 12th of September. The two Aussies are invited to dinner with our Canadian administrator, who offers to cook. She's lived here several years but doesn't like Chinese food much. She's also fishing for information as she is planning a holiday in Australia in October with a friend who lives there. My stomach is not 100% but I don't take too much notice. I don't feel any better later so sleep from 9pm until 6.30am Sunday. I get up for a (slow) walk but go back to sleep for another 3 hours! Unheard of! Light food only. My planned trip to take night photos in Yangzhou cancelled. …..by Sunday afternoon I am ready for a walk to the park across the New Bridge with Peter - he needs to get out & stop worrying about ... read more

…..the term “Head Cook” has a different connotation in the Chinese cafeteria to its usually accepted meaning. The Chinese practice mentioned earlier of chopping the meat up, bones & all, means not only getting the occasional chicken's foot. We had something that looked a bit like chicken recently but the meat was too dark. The bones were similar but Joel solved the problem - it was unmistakeably a duck's head..... …..I went to the RT Mart, the big general purpose store in Yangzhou to get some things that have been on the list since last week & the obtaining of which have been hampered by teaching duties & what would be termed back at home “functional illiteracy”. Encouraged by a revelation that shampoo can be distinguished from conditioner by a number “1” in the midst of ... read more

…..not being good at remembering names is a poor qualification for someone who will have 5 classes of 30+ kids to teach next week. I am struggling to remember the names of my colleagues, the “International teachers” as we are known. I'll be getting photos in due course but for now there's Peter, (Australia), Joel & Chelbee, an African-American couple from Virginia, USA, Erin, from Syracuse, New York, Kyle, (Canada), Matt, Nelson, Patrick & Corey, (USA) also another couple, Kelly & Elizabeth from Montana. Alex is from Manchester, UK, though I don't think you'd pick it from his accent. Laura's also from the Old Dart. There are a few others too. Lauren, (Canada), Gyu & Halim, a couple from Indonesia, then, in administration, Cathy from Winnipeg, Canada, plus local ladies, Angel & Rainy (not their original ... read more

I suppose we should have said this earlier, but, as you know, all foreigners carrying fresh coffee beans, dark chocolate and size 11.5 shoes are rushed through customs with 1st Class treatment. And, it just so happens that we have two apartments here at the school. Our second apartment is currently home to our two bicycles and the box that held our mini fridge. But! If one was to drop in for a visit, they would, without a doubt, have a free, clean apartment complete with a western style toilet and AC as well as easy access to really, really cheap Chinese food. Come on ya’ll, drop by for a visit! This past week I was drop-kicked into the wildly energetic culture of middle/upper class 3rd graders and all of their excitement for the new school ... read more

Into the City we venture. It’s official. Elizabeth and I have freshly been declared by the Chinese Government as worthy participant of their 1 billion-member team. Praise the lord and rejoice. After a full week of holding a thermometer in our armpits, twice daily, and a trip to the International Travel Health Bureau of the People’s Republic of China we passed the test. The trip to the hospital was interesting, er, mind boggling. We were prodded, poked, x-rayed, ultra-sounded, weighed, checked for vision, and of course, asked to pee in a cup. The funny thing was that the restrooms were a long hallway away from the lab, and when given a shallow, lid-less, plastic cup in which to produce a small sample of urine, the trek proved to be not just a “from the toilet to ... read more

We have safely arrived to our school in Yangzhou, China. For those of you who didn't know, we are spending the next 10 months teaching English at the Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School at Yangzhou or Beijing Xin Dong Fang for short. This place is the real deal; we are a part of a giant education franchise that apparently rules all of China. Hell, you (yes you!) could become a proud share holder of this school on the New York Stock Exchange. It has been our intention to set up a blog, but we have found that most (and by most, we mean all) blog sites are blocked, as is facebook. We will try to maneuver through the Chinese censoring system and sooner or later find a way to post stories and pictures. In the ... read more

…..I arrive in Sydney after an uneventful flight from Adelaide sandwiched between a possible ex-army colonel & a Kyle Sandilands lookalike who wears headphones for the whole trip..... …..into the International Departure Lounge, a sea of people rummaging frantically through bags, pockets, purses, etc to unearth the nail-clippers or miniscule quantities of any liquid that might lead to a mid-air disaster..... …..an hour or more waiting for the flight, trying to find creative ways to take pictures using all those reflections in the glass that are unavoidable at airports. A beaut, mild, sunny Sydney day..... .....Gate 25 opens, all aboard. Aisle seat, I can just see blue sky through the window beyond the wing. Looks like a nice day to be sitting ON the wing..... …..finally make conversation with the young (30s..!) Chinese man next to ... read more

It has been sometime since my last entry, and much has happened in my life here in China. I am trying to gather my thoughts, and compile them and all of the hundreds of pictures of my past eventful weeks into my computer for a next series of TravelBlogs. It will take me some time, and I hope to become more prolific in presenting you so many of my joys and adventures in China from this past summer. The classes at my college have also commenced, and my focus will once again be more on my work, and in sharing many of my summer-events with you. During these upcoming months, there are less opportunities for travel. My time will be spent in class, office, and my newly enlarged apartment at Taizhou Teachers College. I have also ... read more

Feiertag in China heißt volle Züge. Wir haben dann eben in einem der Hotels der Mutter geschlafen (Betonung: einem) und sind am nächsten morgen zurück.... read more
