So today we went to the middle school where we will be teaching our lesson. We met with the teachers and the administrators including the mayor and other city officials where Jon described our program and thanks them for their hospitality and they in turn told us about their programs and schools and thanks us for coming such a long way to honor them with our presence. The tone was set from the very beginning when we entered the meeting room to a sign on the wall that read "we warmly welcome the experts from GK12" or something like that. Of course I had to get a picture under the sign that called me an expert. :) The real excitement came when Helen and I got the chance to meet with 5 8th grade students from ... read more

Well..day 2 is down and only 9 more to go. Today was a rather enjoyable day. We began our day with breakfast in Nanjing and then headed to the Jiangus School of Education. We met with our advisors who will work with us on presenting our lesson on Wednesday. After meeting with them we went to lunch for more ODD food from China. I will sooo be ready for some steak and baked potato when I return to the states. After lunch we took a 2 hour bus ride to the city of Wuxi and checked into our hotel. THis is a city that is rural and has many factories. Once we checked into our hotel we made our way to a brand new school that is still under construction and took a tour of it. ... read more

Im not sure what day it is...let me check...I know its Tuesday, but I have to find my calendar...oh, never mind, that will probably take too long. Let me look on the computer. Okay, I think I have it figured out. It is Tuesday, October 13th here, 6:30 am and Monday, October 12th there, 6:30 pm. Leaving Lafayette: Friday, October 9th This is the first time I have actually had a few minutes to sit down and write. I just made a cup of coffee. I learned from my mother to always bring your own coffee, filters, and one-cup coffee device when traveling. You can forgot almost anything else, but forgetting coffee is like forgetting your passport. ... read more

First let me start by saying how much I love everyone's comments. It is a highlight of my day to come back to my room and get to read everyone's comments!!! And Josh...I will NEVER eat the turtle!!!! Okay, this morning started off a little differently than yesterday morning...we had to check out of our hotel before leaving for the days events due to the fact that we would end the day some 2 hours away in the town of Wuxi. I woke up, got ready, packed my stuff, Skyped with Josh, then headed down stairs to check out and eat breakfast. As I got off the elevator with my luggage I was approached by an employee that wantd to help me with my luggage and would not take no for an answer so I reluctantly ... read more

Nihao (Hello), We just finished our first full day here in Nanjing and what an experience this has been. The flight over from Chicago to Beijing took approximately 14 hours. We then traveled from Beijing to Nanjing another 2 hours on a plane. We arrived at the hotel at 11 P.M. on Saturday Oct. 10th. (that would be 11 A.M. on Saturday back in the states) So my travel time was over 24 hours to go from Frankfort to Nanjing. We arrived in the hotel and it is a beautiful 5 star hotel with a great view of the city. I am hoping to upload some pictures along the way. Our first full day consisted of a western style breakfast (toast, bacon, fried potatoes, orange juice) and then my favorite Rice Gruel. It is like grits ... read more

I have come to Wuxi to visit my uncles',who has opens up the chain Sichuan cuisine restaurant at Xicheng Road, just 10-minutes away from Wuxi Railway Station by e-bike. Wuxi ,though not the capital city, stands out in economy as the No.1 in Jiangsu Province. And it just one-hour away by train from the china's eastern metropolis ,Shanghai. In the town there are a lot of fomer residence of the famous people, including great writer ,author of the novel Weicheng(围城)Qian Zhongshu,Chinese traditional Erhu musician A Bing, former Chinese leader in the world-known Great March ,Bo Gu.Above all ,the most attractive one is the Nanchansi Temple in the Nanchang District.A couple of small temples with a large temples in the middle are located along the Jinghang Great Canal ,starting in Beijing and ending in Hangzhou. The temples are of traditional ... read more

It has been some time since the last TravelBlog, though the photos are accumulating by the hundreds. The neglect is in part due to a lack of time, the insane slow speed of the Internet in my apartment here in China, and some other personal events, with which I don't wish to depress you at this time. I hope, that at some point I can catch up with all of the experiences and travels I have been able to document with many colorful photos. I am still very happy with my life here in China, though some personal injuries have made the past days somewhat painful. But that will pass, and I remember someone telling me, that: "Things that do not kill you, will only make you stronger". For now, the students of TTC or on ... read more

18th July So the next two days we spent just being in Olina's city. We went and booked our coach and trip to the mountain Huang Shang which we would got to on saturday. So today i had a sleep in and woke to find all Olina's friends in the flat, they had come round to have dinner and play some games. Olina's mum came home from work especially to cook us some nice dishes for lunch. They were very yummy as usual and i had a chance to see some of Olina's other friends which was nice. Then we went upstairs to the flat ( we often eat in the garage downstairs which has been turned into a kitchen). I asked if Olina's friends wanted to learn some card games which they did, was fun ... read more

Last time i finished with the day that Daisy left to go home and how we bumped into some famous basketball player. Well the next mroning it felt like me and Olina were starting a new part of the trip, with Daisy gone we got up and had some breakfast from a local bakery in Shanghai and then went and caught a lift back to Olina's flat. Once home we got a bus straight into town and went to an Opticians where i got some glasses for only £15 with my perscription in (Best not tell BOOTS, think i'm suppose to wear ones from there since i work there). Was quite a lot of fun in the opticians mainly because Olina and her boyfriend found it amusing at how ridiculous i look (or think i look ... read more

Shanghai, well if like busy cities that are hot and sweaty here is the place to come. We got up early on the 14th and caught a coach to Shanghai and then went to a hostel which we booked. It was a good job as when we arrived they were already full and still other travellers were pilling through the door to try and get in. Even so it was quite a good hostel to meet people. We got our bags behind the desk and went straight for some food, which was evidently served out of someones garage on the street- was'nt the nicest food i've had here. With no time to loose we caught the metro straight to the Shanghai museum which is hailed as a must see. Hmm. We were a bit dissapointed really ... read more
