Hello! I'm a 4th year medical student from KU Med (University of Kansas Medical Center) traveling to China for a medical rotation in February 2016. I'll be rotating at the 2nd Hospital of Hebei Medical University in Shijiazhaung City, China. This city is located in Hebei province about 1h by high-speed train SW of Beijing. However, unless you're a local, it's unlikely you've heard of this city despite it's population of 10 million! My schedule for the month: -1st week: Pulmonology & ICU with Dr. Aihong Meng -2nd week: Spring Festival in Beijing (Chinese New Year) -3rd week: Cardiology with Dr. Xiao Bing -4th week: Surgery with Dr. Guixing Li, a cardiothoracic surgeon... read more

Dr. Meng is an Attending as a pulmonologist in the respiratory department at the 2nd Hospital of Hebei Medical University. In charge of 24+ patients or an entire floor on a given day, fellows, residents, and students, as well as research, teaching, and administrative duties, she is adept at balancing a busy schedule. She was recently invited to start and entirely new respiratory department as Chief at a new hospital across town. On top of her daily duties, she is now also meeting with equipment vendors, hiring staff, and overseeing the creation of a medical department that includes an ICU from scratch. She is quickly advancing to the top of her field. However, even she has her doubts about her fast-paced schedule, specifically because of her gender and family obligations. These are echoed by her peers, ... read more

When we were leaving Datong in the morning things were looking pretty good – the weather was beautiful, sunny with blue skies (until now we haven’t been that successful with the weather, so were more than positively surprised!) and my stomach seemed to have settled for a moment (small bug it would seem, still decided to skip some meals just in case though – long journey ahead!). So full of optimism we headed to Jinshanling... Somewhere along the way we seemed to have run out of luck though as once we got to Jinshanling it was all misty and looked like it was going to rain any moment now… And it just happened so suddenly??? One moment clear blue skies, we drive into a tunnel, get out of it shortly after and it’s all grey and ... read more

I have so much to say catch everyone up! So back on the 20th, my class and got to go rafting on bamboo rafts down the nine twists river! It was an overcast day, and although we had rain ponchos, luckily it did not pour on us! It was beautiful and relaxing. It was about an hour and a half ride with scenery of gorges and lush vegetation. There were cavities in some of the cliffs with coffins that date back to 4000 years ago! Scientist still dont know how the coffins were placed in these caves. I had my theory that they were lowered and swung into from the top, which still seemed somewhat impossible. I guess the truth will always remain a mystery. After the raft ride we walked along side the river and ... read more

Today has been slightly rough. I skipped breakfast to get some extra sleep only to be woken up by my teacher calling my room phone. I was having dreams of thrift shopping in Malibu with nick and i did not want to wake up. After i rolled out of bed we went to a tea history class. Our translator was Mona, one of the girls who was in my group yesterday. She is very interested in opening up her own tea house. She struggled with some of the bug words but i think she did an awesome job. They spoke of advancing the wuyi tea culture and what the school is doing to bring back the tea culture. They talked about the importance of refining the spirit and implications of the wuyi tea ceremony. Wuyishan is ... read more

Tonight was amazing! Actually the whole day was amazing! Dao bu xing e ran! We started the day with the usual 8 am breakfast. my roommate and i slept through the alarm haha for 45 minutes and i finally woke up 15 minutes before breakfast. I could have slept forever But i was excited for the day. After we ate (the only thing vegetarian was porage and a spongie red cake, not the best but it filled me up) we had a campus tour by our new chinese student friends. The wuyi campus is gorgeous, they own the three lakes surrounding the grounds, and my immediate firdt question was can i go swimming?! Haha and they said it is too dangerous but i could fish if i wanted to. The air was warm with a nice ... read more

There are no words to describe what has happened to me in the last 48 hours. Ive hit my highest high and yet felt my lowest low, all in the same day. My moment of clarity made everything connect, for a moment all my questions were answered, that feeling i will never forget. But with answers comes more questions. I am learning to balance my yin and yang. That roller coaster, that we call life, is a beautiful ride. Im so grateful for being here, it has opened my eyes and my heart to a higher meaning, a clearer purpose for why i am here. Ive been searching, for a way to change the world, for a way to be proud of who i am and what i am doing. Atop that mountain i looked deep ... read more
