Hello all, Well, we have one more day in Zhuhai. Today we finished the last of our lesson presentations and tomorrow is our TEFL exam. For those of you not savvy in the lingo, TEFL stands for 'teaching english as a foreign language'. Then tomorrow afternoon we receive our TEFL for China certificates. We leave for Shenzhen on Thursday morning. Then we still have three more glorious 'hotel' days left before receiving our assignments and moving into our apartments. I can't wait! My roommate is kind of driving me crazy. Last night she came in at 2:30am a drunk, loud, obnoxious, vomiting mess. I had to sleep with my iPod on so I couldn't hear her heaving. So gross. This is why I never lived on campus while I was in college. I'm considering requesting a ... read more

Hello All! Yesterday we went to a park I think is called the Zhuhai Sante Cable. Basically, it's a mountain with a ski lift to the top and a slide thing to the bottom (if you pay extra). If you don't pay extra, you get to walk down a really scary set of uneven stone stairs. We didn't know about the stairs, so we didn't pay extra. The view from the top was, of course, beautiful. The walk down was terrifying. By the time we got to the bottom we were all wobbly. My knees are still sore. I had my first real plate of Chinese dumplings today at a lunch. They were amazing! Our exams start tomorrow. By Wednesday we'll be on our way to Shenzhen to receive our school assignments. I can't wait to ... read more

I'm tired and luggage-less. But here are some pics from the sunrise. Went on a gondola ride up a HUGE hill and got amazing pics. Need to put those on my computer still. Going shopping tomorrow night for my clothes. I'm not holding my breath on the luggage. ... read more

I finally have a picture of myself. Last night we ate at an expat bar call the Lucky Iris run by a Canadian guy named Ryan. I had the most amazing cheeseburger. Seriously, it's probably the best burger I've ever had in my life, and I'm not just saying that because I was starving. I also just had to share something very important. You know how sodas in the states are made with high fructose corn syrup? Well, in the glorious country of China soda is made with SUGAR! And it tastes so unbelievably awesome! 7 Up and Sprite are the best. That's all. You may now return to your dull high fructose corn syrup drenched world. ... read more

Nuthin's much to report. I got up early this morning to see the sun rise over the Pacific. It was nice to get out before the heat of the day. I have to say, the heat here is unbelievable. I hope eventually that I acclimate to it. Here are a coupla pictures. Enjoy!... read more

The last week has been a blur! I left JFK at 8am on Thursday, August 21, and arrived in San Francisco to discover that a typhoon (a TYPHOON!) had closed the Hong Kong airport. I magically found about 15 people from my program who were also stranded, and we got to know each other and adventured throughout the city for the night. Thanks to Harris, I was able to find all the tourist destinations we needed (including the In and Out Burger!) Everyone was really cool and we ended up having a blast despite the inconvenience/expense of the delay. We left for Hong Kong on Friday at 9 am and arrived on Saturday, August 23, around 3 pm. Guangdong (and actually all of China, despite its size) is 12 hours ahead of the east coast, so ... read more

Not much to say. No word on my luggage today. I was going to use a friend's computer and call United for free (vs Skype which would cost $ and require me to remember my headset) but there are password issues. So tomorrow... Went back to Jusco again. For 25 yuan ($3-4) I got 3 amazing sushi for lunch, a large steamed bread cake thing, 3 things of ramen, 3 large bags of dried fruit (for lunch tomorrow and the next 2 days with the ramen), and bottled water. I love this country!! Here are a few more pics. My first meal in Hong Kong was Krispy Kreme. And my first beer in Zhuhai. I have more pics on my camera of the hotel's signs and the war memorial park I went to this afternoon. Hope ... read more

Getting nervous…. It’s suddenly dawning on me that within a couple of weeks I will be in charge of teaching several hundred adorable little children how to speak my native tongue. I’ve been in China for nearly four days now and it still doesn’t quite seem real. I haven’t gotten sick yet, which is surprising considering I’ve already heard some toilet horror stories from my fellow teachers. Then again, I wash my hands a hundred times a day and brush my teeth with bottled water, so that may have something to do with it. I started feeling a little overwhelmed by everything including the never-ending ‘get to know you’ session with the other teachers, so I ditched everyone this afternoon for some ‘me’ time. I did my homework first (yuck!) then went for a long (totally ... read more

I like to compare China thus far to a movie like Saving Private Ryan great visuals but you can't fully comprehend it all w/o Smell! and this is not a bashing thing. I remember getting off the plane and smelling that wonderful smell of chinese food being prepared- Glorious! the smell of the flowers and trees. There are of course the smells of sewage etc. Mostly though cigarrettes are the big thing. But after my first day here I really didn't give a crap about all that- I had finally made it. PRELUDE: The begining of my last semester of school a friend of mine told me that they were paying people to teach english in china. I researched it and one day in the library happened upon an advertisement for this program in Shenzhen China. ... read more
