In November, we are going to be doing some English language training in the local primary schools and so this week we visited some of the schools. Our main objective was to see what the standard of teaching was like but also to assess what type of training they need. In the morning, we observed some lessons and then fedback to the teachers. We also went and visited some other classes as most of the students have never seen a foreigner before. We spoke our best Chinese with them which they thought was hilarious and played some games. In the afternoon, we took part in some paper cutting lessons which is a craft local to Qingyang. We also discovered a buffet restaurant where you can eat as much as you want for 30 Yuan (about ... read more

A few weeks off before term starts We spend the next few weeks of freedom before term starts exploring and sightseeing in Lanzhou, climbed 'White Pagoda hill' and drank Chinese tea looking out over Lanzhou, climbed a huge hill in 'Wu Quan park' and nearly suffocated getting up the stairs - apparently the high altitude affects my anaemia issues though hopefully I'll acclimatise soon, great views from the top though! and then took the chairlift back down (the wrong way round to do it but we couldn't find where it started to get it up the hill :( We went to the Gansu Province Museum which Andrew loved and I thought was moderately interesting, helped by the English language labelling. Mostly we improved a little of our Chinese and got better at ordering food in restaurants ... read more

This week has all been about getting back to reality after our travels. Since getting back we have done a huge amount of washing which seemed to have come from nowhere(!!!) and caught up on some much needed sleep. Despite the new semester not officially starting until 24th August, we had a day’s training to finish preparing for the leaders at Number 4 Middle School. This was held on the Friday and went rather well. On Saturday, we went to Heshui, another county, to support some training that some VSO trained teachers had organised as part of the teachers’ “Continued Education Week”. During the summer holidays, every teacher has to take part in this and then take an exam at the end. From what we have been told, some schools organise this better than others. What ... read more

Week 1 - settling in We finally get to our apartments to find only one is at all liveable as the other hasn't been lived in for a year or so and the dust in Lazhou is legendary, so we set up in the clean(er) one and I pretty much spend the next week cleaning the other one from top to bottom. Once it's finally clean we move into that one, Andrew will use the other one as an office. We also start getting used to living in Lanzhou - not being able to read signs, menus, shop fronts etc. which is a bit of a shock, and also not being able to ask anybody anything, but we get very good at pointing and smiling, very quickly - our phrase book is a lifeline! We explored ... read more

Getting to Lanzhou Flights were very very long but we survived (with many movies), and had our last western fast food for a while - McDonalds in Dubai airport, which kept us going until Beijing, 17hrs of travelling in all. We passed the swine flu scanners and were picked up by La-la (yes that is her English name), a friend of Smiles. She drove us to our hotel though only after managing to get completely lost for 2 hrs on the Beijing highways, poor her! ;) We had our first experience of authentic Chinese food with La-la at a famous Beijing duck restaurant, Beijing duck was fantastic as was a foot high tower of crispy noodles, I was less keen on the bony cold dishes though. Andrew predictably liked all of it and even managed some ... read more

Following a bit of procrastination, I decided to head North from Songpan through Gansu province up to its capital Lanzhou. I'm not sure what attracted me to Gansu. I think it was the desire to get off the tourist trail somewhat, and also the opportunity to visit "Tibet" without having to go to the hassle of actually visiting Tibet - Southwest Gansu being comprised of Tibetan grasslands and monasteries. It may also have been not wanting to face the arduous trip back to Chengdu. The journey was very bus-dependent, but the scenery was unlike I've seen before - grasslands bordered by mountains, yaks blocking the road, masked nomads riding horseback across the grasslands. All coupled with the assorted medley of objects that accompany you on bus journeys here - a 10 foot bamboo pole, baby ducks, ... read more

The past couple of weeks for me at least have been a wind down towards the end of term. The school has been busy with various exams and so a big part of my work has not taken place. However, we did have a visit from the Programme Office to see what sort of Life Skills Education the students in the area were getting. This involved visiting different junior and primary schools in the area and interviewing the staff and students. The conclusion was that there was certainly a need to equip the students with more life skills for when they leave school. One group of students at one of the primary schools said that they needed to be taught how to look after themselves and how to live independently. For a lot of these children, ... read more

The weather remains warm and long may it continue. A quiet week all in all and so I have been running a bit more than usual. We also played a few games of badminton but got hammered by our neighbours. Must try harder! Next week they have challenged us to another game. The chance of even getting a couple of points is highly unlikely. At the weekend, I went for a walk to the outskirts of town and headed towards the countryside. You don’t need to walk far to see farmers working the land the way they did maybe 50 years ago. There is an abundance of apricots at the moment and apart from eating them, the locals are also drying them out to preserve them. They are also doing this to the rind of water ... read more

My school is busy doing exams for the various year groups and so I have spent some of my week visiting other schools. We visited a rural primary school in another county and were the special guests at the graduation ceremony. We observed and fedback on a couple demonstration lessons, visited some general lessons and played some games and then gave a speech at the ceremony. We of course were then invited to rather a tasty meal afterwards. This week we also learned that we were not the only foreigners in the town. There are also some working at the local university and 2 other middle schools in the town. It was quite a revelation. We met up with them on Friday night a drink and again on Sunday for a meal as some of them ... read more

I have been to Dunhuang before... I know it's in the middle of nowhere... really... but two summers ago, during a 1 week break from my studies in Beijing, I went to Dunhuang by myself to see the desert, and to explore the Mogao Caves. There was something about Dunhuang two years ago that I loved. I don't know if it was the food, or the people, or just the general atmosphere, but Dunhuang has always held a special place in my traveling heart since traveling there. At first, however, it was not on our itinerary. I didn't think we'd have time to fit it in, and thought we'd have more time in Turpan, so I thought I could show Witt the desert there. But when we arrived in Jiayuguan, we learned that the tourist attractions ... read more
