This is part one of Cambodia. I arrived in Cambodia with a friend a few days after christmas. The travel companion did not work out and I was on my own again. I spent a lot of time talking with young monks almost everywhere I went. I ended up getting sick after my night with the Cambodian Army. Travel was extremely uncomfortable and every where you went you were harassed by touts. Luckily I witnessed no violence and most people were extremely kind. Jan 15 2003 Clouds of dust and temple must, lungs clogged by the red fog stirred up by vehicles traveling on rural cambodia roads, which are more like sandy trails, rock piles and craters. I was out in some remote territory after the sterile capital of Phnom penn and now Im in the ... read more

Siem Reap was friendly laid back little down in those days so after breakfast we walked down to the markets near the river it is a hot 35-degree day and we can walk the streets with out the harassment we received in Hanoi. The markets were ok I bought a few bits and pieces and gave a little money to the land mine victims and lunch was pleasant, we returned to the hotel to chill until dinner time. We ventured back to a restaurant bar in the town centre for dinner that night which was apparently a favourite haunt of Angelina Jolie when she was filming Tomb Raider. Mark is sick again, so he decided to return to his hotel while I headed on to a night club, not sure what I expected but old perverts ... read more

En stund siden jeg har skrevet noe naa, men internett-forbindelsen i Cambodia er ikke av de beste. Vel, her kommer oppdateringen.

Cambodia was my first experience as a solo traveler. In December 2002, I was on a business trip in Sai Gon and decided to take a bus to Phnom Penh, spend a day there, then head to Siem Reap to see the Angkor temples. The road from Bavet border gate to Phnom Penh at the time was not improved yet, thus the road condition was very bad and it took us almost a day to get to Phnom Penh. The bus stopped at Capitol guest house in Phnom Penh. We could book a tour to the Killing Fields and S-21 prison through their services. There were 3 different times per day for the tour, so it was convenient for the tourists to choose any time they like. Next morning I bought a ticket to Choeung Ek ... read more

In the fall of 2002 I flew from San Francisco to Bangkok, where I spent 5 months wandering around and being an idiot. I spent time in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. The most worthwhile thing I did while there was help different groups of people build adobe buildings, giving me the chance to get off the tourist trail and into remote regions where I could have real interactions with the natives. Other highlights included getting sick, puting myself in danger, and exploring Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Also, everything about Laos was delightful, despite witnessing the destruction caused by America's bombing during the Vietnam War. (People are still severely wounded on a regular basis from unexploded cluster bomblets.) After Losing my mind in Bangkok I hopped on a train and slowly made my way to Malaysia over ... read more

Two more weeks and here I am in Thailand. It's hard to believe that I've been traveling for 1 month already. Since my last update, I've tasted the glory of an ancient empire and the horror of more recent decades. But there is more than history to see here and I was able to enjoy the sun too. SOUTHERN VIETNAM: Watch my Southern Vietnam VideoBlog ! I was in Nha Trang when I sent my last message and, before leaving that city, I treated myself to a boat tour: $6 US for the day, snorkeling, dinner and all-you-can-drink wine (see Nha Trang photos). It's been more than 25 years since the "liberation" of Saigon by the communists but the city's new name of Ho Chi Minh City doesn't seem to have fully caught on. A museum ... read more

The flight to bangkok was probably the most hilarious flight i have ever been on. so, we are standing at the counter, an english guy infront of us starts talking to us, he's funny, we continue talking, end up getting seperated, my sister and I are at the duty free area, walk around, take a seat, this english guy comes up to us with a bottle of vodka and is like " you wanna shot?".. we accept, he pours three large shots, we are all feeling a bit lightheaded, we walk through the security still holding our cups as he keeps pouring and even asking the security guards if they want a taste.. we enter the aeroplane, my sister and i have seats together and there is a nice indian man sitting in the one beside ... read more

The boat brought us to Phnom Penh at about 3pm and we met a lovely tuk tuk driver. He took us around a couple of guesthouses and we finally settled on Okay guesthouse. After checking in we went for a mooch around the city, stopping off at a restaurant along the riverside for a couple of fruitshakes. Phnom Penh is a busy city from the locals point of view but we found that, compared with Vietnam it wasn't so busy on the tourism front. The following day our tuk tuk driver picked us up and took us to see the S21 prison and the Killing fields from the Pol Pot regime. The prison is where they used to torture and question people but all but 14 ended up being taken to the Killing Fields where they ... read more
