I decided to give the temples a rest for the day and get back to them tomorrow. Mike had asked if it has been cloudy all the time and the answer is, sort of. Most days have been fairly overcast but I consider that a blessing for the most part. It helps to keep the temperatures down and makes the pictures less contrasty. When the sun does come out it mixes with the humidity and makes for some sticky clothing. I spent today wandering around part of the town of Siem Reap. I wandered through the makrkets and down along the river to the Royal residence and gardens. There were a couple of more Buddhist Wats (pagodas) and I enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the small shrines. They are a nice peaceful break from all ... read more

Sometimes it’s nice to get away from the crowds. The Rolous group of temples is about 16km east of the town of Siem Reap and not on the major temple tour route. This made for a very peaceful trip. It was also nice because we took a different rout through the town. It was interesting to see the heart of Siem Reap in all its hustle, bustle, and dust. I didn’t realize that I was staying in the rather tranquil outskirts until I got a look at the heart of town. Once we cleared the town limits we drove along mile after mile of rice paddies and small huts on stilts. It is just as one would imagine Asian countryside would look. Our first stop was the temple of Bakong. It was built at the end ... read more

Today didn’t start off so well weather wise. As I was having my coffee and toast the rains began to fall. I was planning on beginning my temple excursion around 9:00 but it would have been a little soggy. The rain finally let up around 10:00 so I packed up and headed out to pick up where I left off yesterday. Since I got limited time at the Eastern Mebon temple from the previous day’s downpour I went back and finished exploring the sight. From there I ventured on to Pre Rup. This is a great site with tall towers that offered spectacular views from the top of the central tower. You could see over the jungle canopy and even see the towers of Angkor Wat rising in the distance. Since it was Saturday there was ... read more

Saturday 1st July Paul - Didn't do much today. Decided that as England were playing tonight we would have another lazy day in Phnom Penh before catching the bus to Battambang. Had a stroll along the river front before a lovely dinner in a restaurant along there. Our waitor informed us that the Cambodian people were so grateful that their country was finally being visited by tourists. He kept thanking us over and over again which was kind of bizarre. I wasn't sure whether he was just trying really hard for a tip. Laura - The waitor was lovely, Paul is too cynical! I had a great conversation with him about tourism and how it's changing the country, and apparently even making it more democratic. He was excellent at speaking English and really made an effort ... read more

Funny things can happen when you leave your shoes outside the door overnight. As is the custom, I left my shoes outside the front door of my guesthouse last night. When I slipped my foot in to them this morning I noticed that my left foot seemed a bit cramped. When I went to dump it out, out popped a frog. I’m not sure what kind of omen that was but I think it was a sign for rain, but more on that later. My driver and I headed out at 9:00 AM to pick up where I left off yesterday. Our first stop was Preah Khan, a twelfth century temple. To get there you have to cross a bridge with statues of men pulling a large serpent like creature that runs the length of the ... read more

Wednesday 28th June Laura - Still haunted by the jungle, I woke up several times during the night convinced that there were huge spiders all over the bed! This was not fun, although Paul was mildly amused with this because he'd stayed up to watch the late football. We woke up at 11am and checked out of our hostel to wait around for the 'shared' taxi to Sihanoukville (a beach town on the South Coast). The taxi turned up on time, which obviously took us by surprise. Then we were off. To the taxi rank.... We sat in the taxi rank for 20 minutes, watching all the taxi drivers racing towards anyone who came within 100m of the place and fighting over who was going to take the fares. Our driver had considerately swapped the Cambodian ... read more

Arrived in a small town east of Sihanoukville called Kampot. This place until recent years was a stronghold for the Khmer Rouge; they lived up in the hills surrounding the town. In fact as recently as 1994, three backpackers were kidnapped en route from Sihanoukville by the Khmer Rouge and later executed. Nowadays it is just another quiet Cambodian town. It almost has a bit of a creepy feel to it considering its recent history. There are no ATMs, no way of getting money, no real supermarket and everything shuts up shop at about 10pm so there is zero nightlife. Walking around the place you see very few Western faces. The locals are all very friendly. When you first make eye contact they look at you as if to say ‘what the hell are you doing ... read more

I was up fairly early this morning, around 4:30 AM. There isn't much going on here around that time. I sat around the restaurant and watched the boy sweep the patio until 5:30. Then it was toast and coffee. It was my first experience with a coffee press. Let me be the first to say that they aren't known for their coffee here and I know why. Starbucks won't be offering a Cambodian brew anytime soon. At around 7:30 I hopped in my tuk-tuk and was off to the temples. The first stop was at the main gate to get my ID badge for the week. I splurged on the 7 day pass which set me back about $60. I hear people complain about the price but try to go to Kings Dominion for a week ... read more

It's been a while since our last blog so just thought we'd let you know that all is well, and we're now in Cambodia. We actually arrived via boat from Vietnam about one week ago. We spent a few days in Phnom Penh, then headed south to Sihanoukville on the beach for 4 days. Thought I'd get caught up with these, but the big cushioned chairs, good food, good books, and the sea managed to keep us occupied the whole time...so relaxing there :) We head to Siem Reap tomorrow where we'll spend a few days at Angkok Wat. Details and photos are in the works...you should see them soon! This is an amazing country--we've been learning so much here, and the people are so friendly, everyone always wishing you "good luck" as you move from ... read more
