Breakfast at the hotel. Nam picked us up and we went out to the Roluos Group of temples, including Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei. It was a half-day of sightseeing, so we were back in town by lunchtime. Ate at Kama Sutra. Walked around for a while and stopped at Figo for drinks. We originally wanted to eat dinner at Figo but they weren’t serving food that day. The owner, and American guy, showed us the menu and the food sounded so good—too bad we were leaving the day…He recommended Pissa Italiana, which was excellent. We sat at a sidewalk table and there was a traditional Khmer group playing across the street, which made for a nice ambiance. ... read more

Saturday 24th June Laura - Well we're in Cambodia now, our 4th country (if you count HongKong as a seperate country). Arrived in Phnom Penh as the sun was setting last night. The bus journey from the boat dock was fun - the road being a stoney dirt track even though it is a main road. The kind of journey that you need a good bra for. It was also interesting because we passed through lots of villages which had bamboo houses on stilts, even though they were quite far from the river. It was a very quiet, rural road. And then all of a sudden, after about an hour, we stumbled into Phnom Penh. We were dropped at a dive of a hotel, which we decided not to stay in (the Capitol, for anyone who's ... read more

As I'm sure you had noticed, during quite a sobering stay in Phnom Penh and as a result of too much past drinking, I was becoming quite good at staying off the booze. Unfortunately due to the bad weather here at Sihanoukville, I have no choice but to get absolutely twatted every day again! We caught a bus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville at around 12.15. It was only a 5 or 6 hour journey. The first thing that struck me was the amount that the scenery changed as we went further south. In the north it was very flat and I must admit that a lot of the scenery would not look have looked out of place in the Suffolk countryside (strange but true!). As we continued south the scenery became a lot more mountainous ... read more

Had breakfast at the hotel. Nam picked us up bright and early and we headed out to the temples. We did Pre Rup, Banteay Srei, Neak Pean, Preah Khan, Phnom Bakheng, and some other temple which we don’t know the name of. Had lunch at No. 17 restaurant at Bayon, which was run by friends of Nam. Went back to the hotel, had a quick swim and then got ready to go out. We walked to the Grand Hotel D’Angkor, Siem Reap’s fanciest hotel, which dates back to the colonial days. The manager (an Englishman) gave us a mini-history lesson of the hotel and then we went down to the The Elephant Bar for happy hour. Had dinner at Moloppor Café, a small restaurant/bar down the street from the Bopha. ... read more

Breakfast at the hotel. We called Nam, the tuk-tuk driver who drove us to our hotel the night before. He had said if we needed a driver while we were in Siem Reap to call him. Before we could enter any of the temple complexes, we had to buy passes. US$40 (each) for a three-day pass (at least they put your photo on it and laminate it)! We visited the Angkor Thom complex first, including Bayon, Baphuon, the Terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King, and Phimeanakas. Then we saw Ta Keo and Ta Phrom. Nam took us to No. 4 restaurant at Ta Phrom, which his family runs. All the stalls looked the same, so you just end up eating wherever your driver takes you, which is probably owned by his family or friends…After ... read more

Kim and me have talked about going for a holiday in Cambodia for ages now, and since my contract ended now we decided it would have to be now or never. So, off we went. Our first leg would be the North-East of Cambodia to see the mountains, and then back to Phnom Penh for a night, and then on down south to see the sea. First stop would be Kratie, which is a pretty boring town with 30 000 citizens, but because one can see the infamous Mekong Dolphins there we decided to stay the night. The busride up there was pretty uneventful an quite long, seven hours for 300km. We met a rather nice chap from Austria on the bus, and the three of us decided to find a guest house together. One of ... read more

Cambodia is a country that has been rediscovered by Westerners after the heinous acts committed over the centuries and in particular 1975-1979. For those of you who have read the books or seen the movie "The Killing Fields", I doubt that many foreigners understand or let alone know what happened to the people of this country. After arriving and settling into our guesthouse ($3USD a night!) we decided that we would visit S-21 and The Killing fields of Phnom Phen. S-21 is a former high school that during the years 1975- 79 (the years the Khmer Rouge had control of the country,) was transformed into a prison that over 17,000 people went through. Only 7 people came out alive. It was a place of torture and death. We wandered around the buildings- looking at before and ... read more

Decided to go and have a look at some cultural stuff today. We took a trip to the National Museum, then onto the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. The National Museum was located in quite a striking building with walls of deep burnt red. You were not allowed to take pictures inside, but to be honest it wasn’t all that impressive. I mean don’t get me wrong, it was filled with some very beautiful and very old statues and historical artifacts, however nothing in there was really all that different to anything we had already seen dotted around various towns and temples. We moved on to the Royal Palace and, the Brains of Britain that we all were, turned up wearing vests meaning we were not allowed to enter. Luckily they rent rather fetching white t-shirts ... read more

With a brief exploration of the Siem Reap markets completed, and a few token items in the shopping bags, Jo S, Becs and Malibu (Ross) headed back to the guest house to await the arrival of the stragglers. Upon return, it was discovered that they were already there, and so it began ... The girls checked their e-mails for confirmation of Pove and Dani's arrival date, which had unfortunately been set back by 2 days. We decided that this would probably work out better as Whits would not then be left in this beggar ridden town on her own for too long. So, we decided to fill the next couple of days with some R&R. However, with our final opportunity to meet up with Kate and Claire before Melbourne, a big night was on the cards! ... read more

Took a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Old bus, no A/C, had to keep the windows open the whole way....it took us six hours to go about 150 km (93miles) from the border to Siem Reap. See photo of the bus. You can also see one the lovely rest areas we stopped at. If you're thirsty, hungry, or need to relieve yourself, this is the place. Mostly everyone just peed and then sat around smoking cigarettes while the drivers ate their meals at a nice leisurely pace...The bus dropped everyone off at a hotel and we got a tuk-tuk to the Bopha Hotel. After so many hours on the bus we.were covered in orange dust and our hair and clothes were crunchy! We were too tired to explore and find food so we ate ... read more
