***Rebekah says...* We were sad to leave Phnom Phen, there was so much more to explore. But we it was time to get a move on. We departed yesterday morning for Sihanoukeville, named after a former Cambodian King. The four hour bus ride here was an eptionally beautiful tour of the Cambodian countryside as well as gloriously airconditioned! The small towns and villages dotting the road seemed surprisingly developed, rudimentary though pretty and functional structures. Loads of children runningo and from school, busy markets, and many animals in the fields. I wanted to check Cambodia's development index, something I meant to do before we left. Rachel was making fun of me for being nerdy, sorry that i basically majored in this trip... :) We scouted out the best place to stay, ultimately deciding on a small ... read more

Crossing over from Thailand to Cambodia has been the most difficult border crossing so far. Not only was it the most expensive but the people who provide services here try to squeeze as much money out of you as they possibly can - very stressful. I left Koh Chang on Sunday and said goodbye to Wan. Asians don't openly display affection like Westerners do so it was a little awkward. She was boarding the bus and I was trying to give her a hug and she was very concerned about the people watching us so it was very brief. I promised to mail her some pics but I have no faith that anything I mail from the US will make it to Thailand. Thais write in their own very unique style of writing. So Wan wrote ... read more

This was luxury transport in Cambodia and we paid the required $7 each to go the 4 hours south to the coast. This fee also included a toilet on board and a small meal served by "a handsome boy/beautiful girl". We got the female stewardess and she was quite pretty and efficient at same time (she admonished one of her countrymen for smoking in the loo). Sihanoukville is Cambodia's only seaside resort despite all the coastline it enjoys. The French had an ... read more

Phnom Pehn, Sihanoukville, Kampot, Phnom PehnJason & Kirstyn O After almost 3 months we finally got to see the ocean again, very refreshing site after being landlocked in Laos for the previous month. Sihanoukville is another tourist mecca (by Cambodian standards), with many beautiful white sandy beaches, turqouise water and a million touts selling bracelets ("You buy bracelet, maybe later okay?"). We spent our first day roasting in the sun on deck chairs on Serendipity beach, hence we both looked much like our lunch time lobster meal by days end. A bottle of moisturising cream later, we wisely stayed out of the sun the following day, sitting in the shade and reading books, very relaxing. Next day we were still very sun wary so hired motorbikes and ventured further afield to some of the many other ... read more

I passed my swimming test. By two seconds. I clocked 13.58 and I had to get in under 14 minutes. The last 20 metres I was crawling like hell and that might have been what saved me. Afterwards I was dead of course. The good thing is that I am practically a divemaster now. The bad thing is that I went for a medical check. You need one to become a divemaster. The doc found a minor fault and wanted me to come back in one week. My heart wasn't doing something properly and it might be due to the heavy exhaustion or the fact I got a cough. Well, I am leaving tomorrow morning so I will have to go to a specialist in Phnom Penh. I am spending the last time on the ... read more

Well another country has been and gone, I cannot believe how fast time is flying. We reluctantly left the comfortable river life of the 4,000 islands, via a series of boats, buses, minibuses and yet more minibuses. It was like musical minibuses, only the music was far worse and had a bit of a leg splitting ordeal trying to hop over 4 or 5 canoe boats with our backpacks on. Watching us must have resembled slap-stick comedy. The road to the border was so bumpy and rather remote. The guys driving us found something hilarious all the day long, cracking up between them and blasting out the afore-mentioned awful Khmer music so the bass literally bounced us along the road (maybe it really was flat?) occasionally looking around, smiling away. It was quite a relief when ... read more

It is getting to it's end here in sihanoukville. We are finishing our divemaster courses and plan to head into travelling again. it feels good in a way. But also bad because we have to leave our comfort life here. all places from here will be new and we won't know if a restaurant is good or bad until after eating there. But then again there isn't much more here to do or see. My medical conditions are fine right now. I just have a sore lump in my armpit. I will try to ignore it and see if it goes away. apart from that no problems. I even went to a pizza buffee and managed to eat 12 pieces of pizza and 4 pieces of garlic bread. Good value for money considering I only spent ... read more

Hi again, Hopefully tyhis can be quicker than the last email. So getting to the cambodian border was easy enough, but once there things got a little out of hand. We headed straight to the casino to avoid the taxi touts that follow you around at the border. We had heard people get taxis for about 20US to siam reap and we were aiming to get that or lower, but taxi drivers wouldn't budge from 35US. They keep saying rd was very bad, bridge is broken blah blah blah. We kept saying oh yeah thats what you always say, so we headed of at about 5pm the driver wanted us to stay in a hotel over night and go in the morning because it was too late, but we were definitley going now so we ... read more

Hi again eveyone, Sorry for the tardyness of our emailing, but we haven't had a great amount of free time or any good places with reasonable email facilities. Right now we are sitting at an internet cafe on thebeach at sihanoukville - beautiful, but i will get to that in a minute. I will start were the last email ended. We headed off the wild and wacky sculpture park in Nong khai, The guy who started the park was a laotian man who started his own religion that was a combination of hindu and buddhism and he has quite a following now in this region of thailand. he fled lao just before the communists took over. Anyway the scuptures are pretty amazing some ar 45m high, and very intricate. The crazyiest thing though was heading ... read more
