After a good night's sleep we got up early as we had until 11.00 a.m. until Makara picked us up to go touring. So, a quick breakfast with Eric Kayser before we hired a TukTuk to take us down to the Mekong River and the Royal Palace on the river bank. The Palace appeared at first glance to be a spectacular monument to conspicuous wealth, privilege, power and a finger up to the masses. Inside, it was a gleaming display of gold, silver and jewels often on the Bhudda's which festooned the halls and rooms of the many buildings. King Sihanouk was (still is?) revered by the people but was actually a corrupt, power hungry, dissolute despot (my take on him) until overthrown by another despot in 1970. Lyn was really feeling the heat so we ... read more

Before we flew to Phnom Penh we had a few hours still to spend in Siem Reap at the hotel, catching up on work (Lyn) and having a massage (both of us). The massage was different. It was a Thai version and consisted of being pummeled and kneaded and hit, all over. A tiring experience and we think we would enjoy the Swedish - type massage more, of pushing and smoothing with some of the kneading. But it was very good despite the powerful urge to say "STOP" a few times. The flight to Phnom Pemh took an uneventful hour and the domestic terminal was jam-packed when we arrived at around 3.30 p.m. - hot humid and noisy. There was some important Muslim leader expected and so hundreds of Muslims were waiting for a glimpse of ... read more

We flew into Phnom Penh and I was excited to finally be sharing my true love (Cambodia) with my other true love... We arrived and quickly made our way through Customs before jumping in a tuk tuk – the look on Todd’s face kicking back in the tuk tuk was priceless and we hadn’t even left the airport. The traffic was crazy insane on the way to the Hotel and it was a real eyeopener for Todd. We had booked at the Teahouse in Phnom Penh. It is one of the hotels in the chain of Blue Lime, Templation, The Plantation, The Pavilion, The Kabiki and Mekong Floating Bungalows. A great chain of socially responsible beautiful hotels if you make your way to Phnom Penh. I have always stayed at Blue Lime but my last stay ... read more

After a rather harrowing day yesterday spending about 6 hours at Choeung Ek and S21 and then another 3 or 4 hours writing about it I needed some light relief and some dinner and found both at a corner bar/eatery a couple of blocks from the hotel. Met a young English couple doing the opposite circuit from me through SE Asia. Their enthusiasm for Vietnam was infectious and has me really looking forward to the next few weeks. They have restored my faith in humanity, we'll them and a 12 year old Khmer kid who hustled me into buying a woven bracelet for a buck after opening a can of whoop ass on me at the pool table. John if you're reading this, start your own damned Blog!! And don't forget to send me a link. ... read more

In 1975 the Khmer Rouge came to power in Cambodia under the leadership of Pol Pot. Cambodia was already a basket case, the 1970 - 1975 civil war had just come to an end and millions of Cambodians had been driven from their land and had taken refuge in the cities to escape fighting and heavy bombing by the US, aimed at disrupting Vietnamese supply lines. A lot of these people initially welcomed the Khmer Rouge, but within days Pol Pot's genocidal plans were being put into operation. The cities were emptied of people as everyone was forced back into the countryside to grow rice in order to fulfill Pol Pot's utopian dream of an agrarian society. Many of these people had never lived in the country and had no idea how to farm so either ... read more

We hired a four seater tuk tuk for half a day, to take us around various sites. The kids made us laugh when they began a period of Royal waves. Our first stop was the grand market which was a huge butter coloured Art Deco ziggurat with rows of canvas covered stalls spinning out of each of the six entrance. Piles of fabrics and clothes, live chickens and lobsters, rows of fake watches and handbags and every sort of exotic fruit and veg. Interwoven in the shops were a complete array of workshops including wig weavers, tailors and nail bars. Cas was in her element and it was clear that some retail therapy was needed. We gave the kids some pocket money and Ed was chuffed with a large G Shock watch. We had to say ... read more

It was a very quick flight to Phnom Penh, about 1hr 40. We bought visas at the airport and withdrew some dollars, as this currency is in equal use as the Cambodian Riel. It was rush hour when we cleared baggage and so we had a slow tour of the capital. It's by far the poorest country we've been to so far, one stranger signifier of affluence is what happens to electricity. The cables here are seemingly thrown up haphazardly on poles (just like Peru and Indonesia) and new cables are continually added to siphon off power until the cables take on the form of mad spaghetti-esque art installatiions. There was a dead tree being used as a pole on the main high street, crazy stuff (centre right on the pic). No sky scrapers whatsoever, loads ... read more

Deeper in Asia.. It is at Siem Reap that we found our two new partners, Linda & Wizzy. Two 125cc which brought us across Cambodia. They brought us discover the famous and wonderful Angkor's temples, through the big Cambodian ... read more

14/04/16 Catch a bus part way and then hitch to the airport through the ghost town of Negumbo (New Years), wedge myself into a seat at the port and sit it out until late evening, pleasingly swept through immigration without quibble with my ever so slightly) expired visa. 15/04/16 Watch Star Wars rather than sleeping and knock into Bangkok to join a 6.30am "skytrain" into city. A little jaded first day in a songkrang festival sleepy Bangkok. Wonder a little before an Asian siesta and a quiet evening mooch of town. 16/04/16 Go see the jungle book at mega mall central world and begin a couple of days discovering this extremely likeable world. The food on offer is insane. It's not fully explainable while the street eating is most famous but the choice of food malls ... read more
