Hello There!! Its been quite some time since we've been able to manage any time in front of a computer to blog. So here goes: It's mid-January; we're finishing our visit with friends, Chris & Katja, in Vienna; we're about to head to another continent to meet more friends; so, its time to catch up........ .....A long time ago, in a continent far, far away......Back in time to Cambodia. So, where did we leave off? Ah, It was early December and we were in Siem Reap. Totally overloaded with visions of Buddha, stairs in the temples, and persistent street peddlers, right? Yeah! Following our final Angkor-sojourn out to see the rural temple of Banteay Srei and the countryside, we returned to rest at the Freedom Hotel before venturing off with Neam to the fishing village - ... read more

Objavili sme tiez skvelu francuzsku kaviarnicku a jednu bageteriu s nefalsovanymi francuzskymi croissantami. Cesta prebehla bez problemov, trochu sme mali obavy z toho busu, lebo naposledy cestou z Luang Prabang sme mali v buse chlapika, ktoremu spoza bundy vytrcal samopal (ked presiel cez ulicku a bolo mu ten ... read more

still in Phnom Phen, Bandy has been ill (again). He was covered in the most horrific rash which slowly travelled throughout his entire body (or so he assured me). Looks like prickly heat I reckon, we went to a 24hr clinic, took his blood pressure, heart rate, then produced a massive needle to inject him. We declined, unfourtunatley the 'doctor'' didn't speak a word of the queens so we still dont know what it is. Doesn't look like ringworm, i just checked. I didn't help matters by joking that he'd been drinking lots of whiskey :p But then what do you expect when you let me into a private consultation!! (along with 5 members of the docs family too, eager to see the 'barang' (foreigner) squeel as he's injected with god knows what. We just had ... read more

Dear All, I know its only been a couple of days since my last update but after today I have to write some of it down as this has been one of my best (and worst) days & its my last full day in Cambodia. It started whilst eating breakfast watching the world go by. I now know what 'people watching' really means, I could sit all day here and just watch. There is everything imaginable on the roads. One bike had 6 large sacks on the back (about the size of cement bags) and on top was his passenger - about 6ft up! Where there is a will, there is a way. There are many monks in their orange robes just walking along the river. There are women walking along carrying huge trays of food ... read more

Got the bus from Siem Reap down to Phnon Penh and have been enjoying cheap beers by the river - where the TONLE SAP and MEKONG meet. Visited the royal palace and silver pagoda etc - all very nice... the old market perhaps not so - but still colourful - you can buy fried bugs (look like cockroaches) and peeled frogs if anyone wants to email an order! We also visited the killing fields and the notorius S-21 prison where Pol Pot's victims were tortured before being sentenced to a brutal death...very sobering...... read more

We are now in Phnom Penh which despite being known as one of the scariest cities in the world and being in the top 5 of the worst places to live was actually quite good. We arrived yesterday which happened to be day 2 of a 3 day Water festival involving Dragon Boat racing with teams from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The whole length of the river was filled with stalls selling stuff and people generally milling about and watching the races. When we came to go out for dinner we got about 50m down the road before we had to turn back as the road was full of people. It was completely impassible. There must have been over a million people there. It was good to experience it though. Today we went to Toul ... read more

Lindsay - Same Same, but Different is a phrase we met in Vietnam, which seems to have travelled to Cambodia with us. We got the obvious meaning, but haven't quite understood exactly what is means. "Same Same, but Different" was the moto of the tour company that took us through the Mekong Delta, across the Cambodian border and to the capital city Phnom Penh. And although I really enjoyed the Mekong Delta tour, unfortunately our experiences once we met the border weren't so enyoyable! Our guide accompanied us as far as the border, and sorted out the initial fee (with an extra $1 "processing fee"!) gave us directions about where to pick up the next boat at the other side of the border, but then we had to fend for ourselves! We disembarked from our boat ... read more

Well, and again there is a holiday. The Khmers love holidays, and will take any opportunities to have one. This is actually the old king's birthday, not the current one, but still it's a three days holiday. Decided to go to Siem Riep for this holiday. Not for Angkor Wat, since I already have seen it, and I only have two days in Siem Riep, but to visit a friend, and get out of PP. PP is starting to get on my nerves. Anyway, the bustour will take six hours, but I have loaded up on books, so hopefully it won't be too painful. I have bought the most expensive ticket, US$6, for a limousine bus, but for those of you which have travelled in Asia before, that can mean so many things. The picture on ... read more

The border crossing into Cambodia went surprisingly well. We had our doubts about this visa issue and fully expected to be travelling back to the hammocks later that day, but all went well - and only $3 'tax' a piece to the officials! The journey down to Phnom Penh took about 9 hours, down reasonable roads considering, during which we acquired our long overdue puncture. We arrived in the city at around 10pm and found a nice guesthouse on the lake - 'Happy', and paid $3 (US) a night for a room. Overall it was a nice place to stay. We won't give a 'blow by blow' description of our time in Phnom Penh, we feel more impressions and experiences are required for this recovering, up and coming city. We spent one day taking in the ... read more
