So I lied, this will be my last one. I just had to relate to everyone a recent loss I had. In Bangkok just 1 day after I arrived I bought a pair of white slipper shoes with a print of shoes on them. Beautiful. All over Asia you must remove your shoes before stepping into a store and they were perfect for slipping on and off. I loved them. Every time they would get dirty I would lovingly scrub them clean in our hotel sinks with soapy water. With me I also have two other pairs of shoes. My runners, and my flip flops. I hate wearing running shoes in this heat. Flip flops cut up the area between my toes and are thus labeled ''devil shoes'' Very recently a jackass knocked just one out ... read more

So I have no real energy for this diary thing anymore. I am going home in just 5 days too, so am wondering why I am writting at all. Just a few quick updates for everyone since I last wrote: 1 I was groped by a 17 boy while I was sleeping. 2 I found out how long this human can hold her pee. The time is 4 hours, and then it becomes an emergency. 3 I also found out to what length a person will go to go to the bathroom at said time. I climbed over 10 soundly sleeping people and made the bus driver pull over immediately or else I would pee right there. The threat worked. 4 I like hammoks. 5 I also love riding a bycicle. An activity that I got ... read more

Yet another chapter unfolds. Already the days seem to blur together. The opportunities to email do not seem as abundant as our time is constantly filled with experiences. And in Phnom Pehn we do not have internet access in the hotel so I have walked about 15 minutes away to make this entry. As is always the case, the question is where to resume…so much has happened, so much has been experienced! Well today began with me in charge…yes me. I was designated to lead the group this morning as our group leader went on an excursion all her own. She is an interesting individual and our group happens to be her last in Cambodia and Vietnam before she heads to Egypt to lead trips there. Consequently her time is frequently concentrated on saying good-bye to ... read more

all is good here at the moment, have had two weeks of heading out the Zoo (Phenom Tamao) and starting on the project i have been set with weekends of seeing main things in town - Royal Palace, Killing Feilds of Cambodia and Museum. So you all know what the hell i am doing out here, here is a brief rundown... the Zoo is very much at its initial stages but very much a wildlife rehabilitation centre for many confiscated animals... (there are elephants, lions, tigers, otters, so many sunbears, so many gibbons!, so many birds and more!). I am currently working on putting together some interpretation signage for Section 1 of the Zoo. Idea is to create a little more awareness of the species found in this area (Siamese Crocodile, Elk's Deer, Pig, Munjac, Civet, ... read more

This was my last day in Cambodia, a 37 hour day by my calculations. I was not a math major, so if I'm off don't be surprised. I left Phnom Penh just after noon, but arrived in Seattle at 2pm the same day. It felt like more than a 37 hour day. Being back in Seattle is a bit odd, and definately cold. I had my first warm shower in a month - only crazy people want hot water in Cambodia. There was one tourist at our hotel in Siem Reap, he was complaining to one of the women who worked there how the hot water in his room didn't work. I tried hard not to laugh out loud at him. Cold showers are the only relief I could get from the heat. The last thing ... read more

I ended up getting a bad cold, or perhaps a flu on our last day at Siem Reap and was miserable on the six hours bus ride back to Phnom Penh. I was happy to be going back to the comfort of Anisa's apartment though, and she took very good care of me. We were planning on turning right back around and leaving for the northeast, Krachie or Ratnakiri, but my cold got in the way. We decided to rest in town for a couple days and decide later. I just wasn't up for the twelve hour bus ride and I doubt Anisa was looking forward to it either. Hanging out in town included multiple trips to Psar Toul Tom Pong to buy kramas and other gifts. I also accompanied Anisa to the Intercontinental Hotel where ... read more

Hello Everybody! Anisa and I went for the morning to Phnom Odong, which is just west of Phnom Penh. We went because one of her tourist books recommended it, though we weren't exactly sure what we would find there. As soon as our taxi arrived we were swarmed with children. Six of them attached themselves to us, despite our insistance at 'no guides'. Two of them spoke fairly good English: Nem and Jai. They followed me for the entire day and the other four hovered around Anisa, so close that she almost tripped over them. As the day wore on they became more useful and polite, at first they were rather annoying. Phnom Odong is basically a hill in the middle of incredibly flat land. There are several stupas each in varying stages of reconstruction. The ... read more

Since i last wrote, after that amazing journey, well we met up with Andys sister Victoria again in siem reap where they had checked us in to a lovely hotel. We spent a week together in siem reap and went to see all the angkor temples which were truly amaing and huge, my favourite one was angkor thom whcih is where the film tomb raider is filmed. It has been left to the jungle and trees are growing through the temple, it really is good. We did the obligatory sunset and sunrise (getting up at 4.30am!!, not a good move) But well worth it. Got to see some fantastic views, we spent the rest of the time lazing by the pool and making the most of haveing a tv, sad i know. Oh and we also ... read more

It's 8am Sunday morning and I'm safe and very warm typing this up in an internet cafe in Phnom Penh. The journey over was actually quite pleasant. Air Canada's really improved their international service to keep up with the Asian carriers' competition, but the dimsum was still the most disgusting I've ever had. Took one bite of some unidentifiable greasy blob and left the rest intact. The plane ride was my real start to vacation - until then it'd been rush rush to get everything done. On the plane, I reverted to my baby self: eat, sleep, watch a movie, repeat. Wondrous. I've always wondered about some things in the world. One of them is why people at visa counters never smile - the ones behind the Phnom Penh visa counter were certainly quite grim. It's ... read more

Bonjour tout le monde! I thought I'd throw in a little French for some linguistic change. I really expected to be able to speak more French here, but it is quickly dying out and being replaced with English. Oh, well. Today Anisa went to work out and I sat around. Then we went to the big market in town: Psah Thmei where we bought loads of exotic fruit. Anisa decided I needed to try everything and I"m not complaining. It was amazing. The market itself was amazing too. You really can get everything there. I saw pigs legs with hoofs attached, five inch high Christmas trees that light up, live crabs, more shoes than I have ever seen in one place, cases of huge jewels and watches, dried fish staring at me, bunches of bananas bigger ... read more
