Vaikuttavin hiljaisuus ymparillamme syntyy kun museota kiertavat nykyaikalaiset saapuvat entisiin luokka... read more

I'm now here in Phom Pehn, having traveled by boat through the center of Cambodia yesterday. I entered Cambodia at Poipet about three days ago, planning on going to Battambang. Popet looked just like a frontier town, and I half expected to see Clint Eastwood or John Wayne swaggering down the road. However, I was struggling to get a taxi, so decided to join a group of people who had traveled from Bangkok by bus (I had come by train, much more enjoyable). We were crammed into a minibus, about 28 of us, and set of for Siem Riep. It was without a doubt, the worst journey I have ever had. 6 hours, one break (well three if you count the times the bus broke down, crammed into tiny seats), and the road was a dirt ... read more

Battambang I've spent the last week visiting the magnificent temples at Angkor Wat, with a short detour beforehand to Battambang in the west. Battambang (pronounced Battambong) is a 5 hour bus ride away, is a rather nice little town and there are various temples and sites to see in the surrounding region. It's also a convenient stopover on the way to Angkor, travelling onwards by bus or boat in my case. In Battambang a took a moto for the day with guide ($15) and went to see a couple of wats (temples) and some old ruins (I can't remember the name without the guidebook to hand). The highlight of the day however was a ride back to the town on the bamboo train - basically just a single track railway line which the locals use to ... read more

So after our second night in Koh Lak, we took a bus on Christmas morning to Phuket air port to meet up with big Gerry, the Lush father. It was very strange to be in such a warm climate on December 25 and away from home. This would be the first year in a long time that I wouldn’t wake my parents up early in person. Being 15 hours ahead of the west cost, I meant to keep the tradition of waking them up alive by calling home later this night but as you will read later, I had a little trouble. So after surprising Gerry at the air port the Lush family was finally together. We took a taxi van to a tiny port where we bought our tickets on a long boat ferry to ... read more

Phnom Penh really was an assault on the senses and emotions. Yesterday we did the serious stuff - Choeng Ek Killing Fields followed by the Tuol Sleng (S21) Prison. Although not as graphically 'in your face' as the War Remnants museum in Saigon it used it's vagueness to make you imagine the trauma that went on in these places. I knew very little about the Khmer Rouge and the suffering Cambodia went through before coming here and I still don't fully understand the whys and the hows, but its opened my eyes and I want to find out more. There is actually very little to the Killing Fields. It is simply a 2 hectare site with what look like several bomb craters and signs reading this is where something was. However, the bomb craters were mass ... read more

After a relatively short ride from Kratie, I was lucky enough to be following our route on the map, and then realized that I was about a five minute walk away, told the driver and hopped out before getting to the final stop where all the tuk tuk drivers were waiting. I ended up at my guesthouse, checked in and showered about 10 minutes after getting off, and set out to see the city. I realized right off that this city had all kinds of Charm that Hanoi was missing. Many French colonial buildings had been restored, and the roads are wide, making for a pleasant stroll along the riverside. Also, as soon as one gets out of the tourist ghetto, tuk tuk touts almost disappear. After a good long walk, I got back to my ... read more

Wo will man hin? /ppSpazieren bzw. Essen gehen laeuft so:/pp Alles wichtige (Geld, Stadtplan, Adresse v. After our sojourn on the coast, we returned to Phnom Penh for New Year's Eve and spent a couple of days sight seeing, shopping and staying in Raffles Hotel! Phnom Penh was nothing like expected. Not as manic or noisy as HCMC, with beautiful architecture and great restaurants and coffee places. We visited Tuol Sleng - the school which was turned into a gruesome prison (S-21) under the Khmer Rouge - and, more happily, the spectacular Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. We also shopped for silks in the Russian market, and saw monkeys and Sambo the elephant at Wat Phnom. And we ate spectacularly well - at Java Cafe, Friends (a restaurant set up to help Phnom Penh's street children) and, on New Year's Eve, an incredible tapas fiesta at Pacheron which was still going at ... read more

Aaaah - I just spent 30 minutes writing and somehow managed to lose it, so this will be a very condensed update now as I can't be bothered to do it all over again!!! Since last time I went down to Sihanoukville on the coast, which is a rather nice beach-side town with several great beaches spread around the town. I rented a scooter and explored around, and also went to the nearby Ream national park (forests, mangroves and little islands) where we managed to spot some freshwater dophins. I spent Christmas there and there was a great party at the Eden bar with cheap drinks and great curries all night! rather strange to spend Christmas in a hot country though...After 5 days there I went by share taxi (6 people inside - rather uncomfortable for ... read more

Current Mood: Shocked and disturbed This day was a difficult one to say the least!! after going to sort out Hannahs flights for the day and doing the typical old bank withdrawals we went back to our accomidation to book a tour to the locations of The Killing fields and S21 (former Khymer rouge Prison) now the Kyhmer rouge genocide museum!! Not that it was a tour to say the least but with transportation to and from the sights i guess this warrants the 'TOUR' title you see everywhere as part of a top three things to see in Phnom Penh!! The lonely planet quotes the field as being a 'striking contrast of cambodia today to its dark abys of a recent past'. This quote maybe based on the experience that you will recieve when walking ... read more
