The next series of blogs will be fairly brief as we have a huge backlog to catch up on! We have spent the last month in Laos having so much fun and with limited internet facilities that its hard to go back and talk about what we've done! Hopefully the pictures will give you a better idea! We miss you all lots and appreciate all your comments, emails and concerns! Phnom Penh We had great fun in Phnom Penh, at first we didn't realize the city's potential as we ended up in a guesthouse in the wrong part of town- but we met Charlie again at his place by the lake and realized there was a lot of fun to be had here! We haven't got many photos for some reason but the museums, markets and ... read more

Up at 5am to catch the bus to Phnom Penh. After catching motos into town we found we were standing in front of the same sad little bus we had arrived on. We made sure to get different seats, which ended up making little difference. The journey was as bad as the first time to Kratie and then our driver decided not to take the newly paved road to Phnom Penh which has a toll. Instead we took a variety of cross country dirt tracks all the way down to the capital. It took 12 hours in total and we were never so glad to get off a bus in our lives. Once there we caught a tuk tuk to the lake and this time stayed at a different guesthouse (Just for a change). The room ... read more

So we arrived in Phnom Penh yesterday, in the evening. First of all, the visa/customs in the airport was crazy. A bunch of people standing by the counter waiting for their passport and visa, with money in one hand. Vaguely reminds me of buying a drink at a bar in NYC on a Fri night. We arrived at our reserved hotel, Sakura, at around 9PM. And our hotel manager asks "you guys want beautiful girl?" That's right, our hotel manager is a pimp. I was irritated because I had asked for a map of the city and exchange some money, but that was the reply I got. I was reminded of "Lost in Translations" except a shadier and more ghetto version. We went out for food at around 11PM. Had a really good meal. Sweet/Sour River ... read more

Hi from Vientiane, Laos, where Danielle and I have spent a few days before heading out on the train tonight to Bangkok. We're meeting up with my parents for a bit of luxury and r&r in a villa for a week - the longest I will have been in one place since I left home! I can't quite believe I've been away for 7 months already - time is flying past. In the past few days I've finally booked the last leg of our journey to Australia - the boat from Singapore to Brisbane! After exchanging emails with a shipping agent in NZ for the past few months I've taken the plunge - we sail in early March and arrive 9 days later in Queensland, meaning I will have travelled all the way from the UK ... read more

Well i dont really know where to start as we have done sooooo much! It has been a VERY emotional time. I had already heard from Rachy about the orphans and also about the genocide. But nothing can compare you for the true reality of it. We arrived in Phomn Penh and it was very hot and sticky! After a mix up with our passports (a long story) we felt tired. The next morning bright and early we set out on the Tut Tut which we had hired for the whole day! our driver was called Sam, a great way to get around! We saw the royal palace and Silver pagoda which were amazingly beautiful. Then we had a bumpy, dusty ride to the "killing fields" where the genocide had occured. Dont really know how to ... read more

It's been a while since I posted my last blog, my apologies to all those regular readers who have been anxiously awaiting word about my travels. I believe my last blog was posted the night before I went to Ankor Wat, so maybe that is a good place to start this one off. I woke up at about 8 and hired a tuk-tuk driver to take me around Angkor Wat for the day. I think I arrived at the temple complex at around 9 or 10 and managed to see everything I wanted to in less than 6 hours. The temple complex is very large and if one purchased the three day pass there would be more than enough to see. However, by going for only half a day, I was able to see all the ... read more

After a quick plane ride from Siem Reap, I spent the next few days roaming the streets of Phnom Penh. Sunburned & nearly getting killed on my favorite mode of transportation, I toured the monuments, National Museum, Silver Pagoda, Royal Palace, Independence Square & finally the quiet waterfront of the Tonle Sap River situated very neatly outside my guest house, the Indochine Hotel. Being on a bike certainly frees you of moto drivers & tuk-tuks...or does it??? Hey lady...ride, ride? Um, no thanks, I can actually move around the city myself. Amazing for a Westerner isn't it ;) Day two brought the Tuol Sleng Holocaust Museum & couple of hungover Aussies. I walked & it was too far, too hot & otherwise a crazy, crazy, crazy bustling city. The museum was disgusting. A children's school converted ... read more

we came back to phnom pehn for a couple of days before flying back to bangkok (we'll only be in bangkok for 24 hours this time). this time we're staying at the top banana, a little hippie haven about half a block from the hotel we stayed at previously. it is a backpacker style place with common gathering areas and nice staff.....and it's a whopping $5 a night!!! we still have some shopping to do today (and we have to buy another suitcase to stuff all of our finds in)...who knows what else the day will bring. unfortunately for us, burning man tickets go on sale tomorrow and the internet here is WAY to slow to even attempt that feat.....so i guess we'll be paying more for tix this year : ( i can't believe we'll ... read more

I met Fred and Kitty Lipp before arriving in Cambodia. We sat with tea and scones at their farmhouse in Whitefield, ME. They own a foundation that gives scholarships for girls to go to school in Cambodia (www.cambodiascholarship.org). They travel from village to village to meet with the girls that they sponsor and visit the schools that they help to build. Fred has also written children's books based around Cambodian culture (my favorite is "The Caged Birds of Phnom Penh"). Today I had lunch with them at The Hotel Royal--the same hotel depicted in the film "The Killing Fields"--a respuit for journalists and wealthy tourists alike. Kitty and Fred get a discounted NGO rate for a lovely room. We all sat at poolside and I scarfed down a Club Sandwich and a Papaya shake. Being ... read more
