Current mood: Mixed.... Missed out on Saigon because of time, boooooo! Bus ride and Border crossing from Hell But im here at last....... and im unsure!! Well leaving Mui Ne For saigon to only stay one night was disapointing but in the end it was the best thing to do and to be honest im sure from what i did see Saigon would have been no better or different (apart from the odd sight) than Hanoi!!! and im piss tired of cities!!! So the bus was a slow one considering it was only a three hour ride but on arrival (and for the first time on my rip) i wondered around aiomlessly looking for accomidation!!! After looking at some rat pits we came across another type of pit that was to be fair alright!!! with a ... read more

We arrived back on Boxing Day and checked into a different guesthouse this time. One that has a better atmosphere with a room on the lake. We were quick workers and soon had booked a day trip for tomorrow and the bus to Vietnam on the 29th December. The rest of the day and some of the evening was spent chilling by the lake. On Wednesday we went on a city tour, the first destination was Cheoung Ek (The Killing Fields). It is hard to believe that this kind of torture went on not that long ago. The first thing you see is the glass tower which is filled with skulls, it is upsetting to think that so many people have died and that their families do not have closure and that their relative has no ... read more

Arrived in Phnom Penh about midday on Tuesday & had already decided where we wanted to stay, (a hostel Steve had recommended to us that he'd stayed in), Number nine guesthouse. We got a tuk tuk from the bus station & the guesthouse was just down the road from where we had previously stayed on the lake. We spent the afternoon sitting in big comfortable chairs, enjoying the sun & reading our books. We managed to get a bus booked for Friday to Ho Chi Minh City & arranged a City Tour for Wednesday. On Wednesday after breakfast we went to get our Minibus which left at 9.30am & took us to the Killing Fields, a mass grave & torture site of the Cambodian Genocide, similar to the Holocaust & Auschwitz. I knew it would be ... read more

Well i have spent just over a week in Cambodia, first stop was Phnom Penh, did the usual visits S-21 where Pol Pot prisoned and torchered people, the killing fields where the mass graves are and also did another shooting range. S-21 is quite eerie, you can walk into the converted classrooms/prison rooms and they have a bed in the middle of the room with iron restraints on the bed and if you look on the wall there is a photo of the person that was found dead next to where you stand. The killing fields where the people from S-21 were executed and buried are quite sureal aswell, not many people were talking after we left the site, leaves a lump your throat. Cow blowing up time!!! ................. only joking before anyone starts, when you ... read more

So off to Phnom Penh we went. What can I say. Before I went to Cambodia, I had little general knowledge of the country itself aside from the usual Gary Glitter stories and little much else. What is it really like?? Phnom Pehn is the capital and anyone who is anyone pretty much lives in the Capital. If you are someone in this country, you drive a 4x4. You are likely to have on you or have easy access to a gun. You probably have bodyguards. You/ Your parents money almost certainly comes through/came from illicit ways i.e corruption/backhanders. You may even drive your car around with no registration plate and blacked out windows. This is quite common and you may well have blood on your hands in some form. This is the way the Khmers ... read more

I have really enjoyed Cambodia, or Kampuchea as the Khmers call it, the people are just gorgeous looking and the history is just mind blowing on all sorts of scales. I arrived in Cambodia by plane to save some time and also as I had heard the the border crossings overland from Thailand can sometimes take a few hours and is a rather bumpy ride. I was quite surprised by the size of the airport in Phnom Penh, I swear that the arrival terminal was about 100 metres long, not that I am complaining as it was really easy to get out, but for a capital city, I sort of expected bigger, but I suppose that coming from the new Bangkok airport and the insanely enormous size it is, anything would look small in comparison. It ... read more

after hitting the viet/khmer border we proceded up the mekong river, destination phnom penh. me rowan and judith stuck together and decided to stay as a wee posse. probably influenced by the fact that the poor gits couldnt get rid of me. we headed for the okay guesthouse on the other side of town and were promptly dissapointed agter assurances from our tuk tuk driver that it had rooms available. i managed to speak to the manager after a while standing around and we got 3 beds. mine however was in a dorm. i hadnt hit a dorm yet in asia, i approached with trepidation but all turned out pretty well. after all $1 for a bed is worth some israeli/dutch twats coming in at 5 and waking me up. i was however, glad to be ... read more

I decided to stay one more day in Phnom Penh and travel to Saigon with Scott and Darren on the 24th. I was exhausted and overwhelmed by the past couple of days and the bus for Saigon leaves at 7:00 in the morning. I also made plans to meet Deb and Nige at noon to see the Russian market and to have lunch. I met Deb and Nige at their apartment and all three of us jumped on their moped, this was a site, I basically was hanging off the back and holding onto Nige for some sort of balance while wrapping my arms around Deb who was in the middle. I wish I had a picture. We went to a nice restaurant and had lunch. I had the local special. In hindsight, I wished I ... read more

We wanted to see some sites while here in Phenom Penh and our Guest house had the perfect solution, a 1 day tour around them all. A few of us set off in the house mini-bus and first up was a stop at a shooting range, a bit bizarre we thought but we'll check it out, a couple of pistols and some boring rifles maybe. Upon arrival hunger pangs were calling for breakfast and first thing that happens was one of the guys brought over the menu, brilliant, food, right, lets get stuck in. Wrong! it was indeed a menu, but stick the food, this was the menu for the weapons and I'm not talking spud guns here...... Top of the list was a kalashnikov - AK47, then to follow were numerous pistols, Tommy gun, M60 ... read more

Sadly, after an insufficient amount of time spent in Saigon I boarded a flight bound for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Not sadly, I had my dear pal Jimmie waiting on the other side to join me for the next few weeks in doing what we do best together, having a good time. Checking into the hotel in Phnom Penh five hours later than Jimmie, I was not surprised to be informed by the front desk staff that he was next door receiving a manicure and pedicure. Jimmie likes to travel brilliant far off lands around the world, and he likes to do it in style. After a warm embrace and getting caught up, it was time to explore Cambodia. Cambodia is a country which differs from its neighbors in that the people and the psyche of a ... read more
