The Khmer Rouge and the Killing Fields Disclaimer: Though an account of actual history, some parts are violent and graphic I must embarrassingly admit that I did not know what I was getting myself into when we were heading in our tuk tuk towards the killing fields, 14 km from town. I knew of Pol Pot and that he was a "bad man" and that there had been a genocide, but my sophomore year world history didn't bring to mind much more. We arrive at the gate, and after we purchase tickets we are given an audio headset guide and a small map. The fields is arranged in a circle with 18 stations, and there is an audio account for each station. It's hot, so we huddle in the shade from station to station, but I ... read more

Even though I have the luxury of air, owing to the fact I’m quite a bit taller than most of those around me, it still feels crushingly claustrophobic as I surge and sway with the motion of the crowd. Over to the left a dozen or so people break through the barrier and make a run for it. Neither the police nor soldiers holding the line seek to chase them, deciding instead to hold their positions and stem the tide, lest there be more attempts to break loose. Seeing this opportunity I attempt to squeeze my way through toward the breach. Reaching the spot it’s clear the escapees have managed to jump the fence, which is now being fortified with extra barbed-wire and police reinforcements. Flying into Phnom Penh last week, we hadn’t known of the ... read more

Lying on the banks of three important rivers, Tonlé Sap, Mekong and Bassac, Phnom Penh is the southernmost capital of the ‘Mekong 4’ countries. The city that has suffered the loss of more than 90% of its population in the seventies is still recovering, and is one of the fastest growing in the region. Even though its relatively recent history was everything but nice, the people of this pleasant city are one of the nicest, and warmest in the whole region. Its relaxed atmosphere, with a great choice of hotels, bars and restaurants make it a great destination for a holiday escape from the fuss of its neighboring counterparts. Urbanism The urbanism of Phnom Penh is the most complete in the whole region. The orthogonal urban grid is combined with several circle roads that go around ... read more

Siem Reap to Phnom Penh by coach, 7 hours on a National Highway. Always a great way to see the country. Mostly rural, passing through the odd town, on a road that was in places concrete, but for significant stretches just earth, uneven at that. As we entered Phnom Pehn things didn't improve, just more vehicles/mopeds on the roads, so massively congested and polluted. It seems that people generally don't walk very far, so as soon as you outgrow sitting on the family moped, you get your own and that appears to be early teens. Our hotel, the 252 (in road number 252) is an oasis of calm, lovely room with air conditioning, restaurant/bar area next to the outdoor pool. With temperatures in the thirties, what in some places are luxuries (air con and pool)here are ... read more

Hot, dirty, chaotic, desperately poor and utterly charming - welcome to Phnom Penh. Once called the "Paris of the East", there's a lot to see and do in the Cambodian capital, so I'd set myself a busy few days. I started with a visit to the Royal Palace, which is also home to the Silver Pagoda. The grounds and buildings are beautiful, and after the tour busses of the north in Siem Reap, it seemed blissfully empty. The busiest place was not surprisingly the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Silver Pagoda), home to the Buddha of the Future. Made from 90kg of pure gold and bejewelled with over 2000 diamonds some more than 25 carats big, it was truly spectacular and very beautiful. Just up the road is the National Museum, which although housing an impressive ... read more

Today was a difficult day, as expected. We had breakfast in the hotel this morning, then met the group at 8 am to head out to the Choeung Ek Memorial at the Killing Fields, about an hours drive from our hotel. There is a memorial here to the estimated 3 million people killed by the Khmer Rouge. The memorial stupa is made up of an estimated 8,000 human skulls and marks the site of the infamous Killing Fields. This wasn't the only location where Khmer Rouge victims were killed in large numbers; such places were located all over Cambodia. On the drive to the Memorial Sovann told us about the history of the civil wars in Cambodia and the political situation over the years, and how the Khmer Rouge came to power. His mother lost her ... read more

We've made it to Phnom Penh after a very long drive over extremely bumpy roads! Yesterday we drove from Siem Reap to a village near the Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex for our homestay (about 3 1/2 hrs drive), The scenery through rural Cambodia is very pretty. We passed through little villages on the way. The houses are all on stilts, mostly made of wood (some with a thatched material) and some of concrete. There is almost always several skinny white cows in the yard, sometimes water buffalo. Rural Cambodia memories: green rice fields, water buffalo, palm trees, stilt houses, "Cambodia People's Party" signs, skinny white cows, Buddhist temples, pink water lilies, warm smiles. (The power just went out in our hotel! Hope it comes on soon. I can keep working on the blog though, since ... read more

I arrived in Phnom Penh after a six hour or so bus ride from Saigon, the border exit and entry was all handled smoothly by the bus company employees which was quite nice actually. Before I left Saigon I forgot to write down the address of Me Mates Guest house in Phnom Penh, but luckily the tuk tuk driver knew where it was and took me there. The countryside is really beautiful on the way here as it sprawls out vastly and I remember thinking to myself if this was left-over from the Pol Pot days where he evacuated the cities in order to create an agricultural society. As I found out that is indeed true. Me Mates is a pretty chilled out place on a side street in the city where in the mornings the ... read more
