During the genocide of Cambodia between 1.7-2.7 million people were killed by Pol Pot and his regime. I’m going to start this blog backwards, the last words they said to me as I left the killing fields we’re “Tell your friends, tell your friends.” So that’s what I’m doing. I asked my guide how did Cambodians feel about tourists coming here, she said they wanted people to come here, they want the world to know what happened here and to make sure it never happens again. When the Khmer Rouge (the equivalent of the Nazi Party) seized power in 1975, they began an unimaginable reign of terror. Everyone from the Capital Phnom Phen was forced out into the country to work for the regime, working all day, 12 months of the year without a break, they ... read more

Right… Sorry this is late everybody, we had a tough first week at the orphanage. After realising our long work hours, intertwined with my late night revision sessions (becoming so monotonous…) I have only just found the time to write this superb piece. So let’s get down to business… I honestly can’t remember the order of our activities and so I will try to describe each one in the best way possible. However, I shall order the events as much as possible, but my brain has been frazzled with the amount of science I am trying to remember at the moment (stupid medicine exams… who wants to be a bloody doctor anyway). On Monday (28th August), the four of us set off for our first day at the orphanage. After our tuk-tuk driving round in circles ... read more

Bangkok - day 2 Now this, was a brilliant day. We rose early, as per usual and headed over the road for our favourite "eggs and facon". At about 8 o'clock we boarded another minibus to the floating markets. These were truly surreal. After quite a 'short' (hour and a half) journey, we had arrived and immediately embarked on the floating part of our journey, by stepping onto a small river boat and heading down the most narrow canal/river towards the floating markets - we couldn't see over the top of the boat until we stopped and I am still convinced that the person 'motoring' the boat couldn't either, but his guessing of where the turnings were and when other boats were approaching was exquisite. I say 'motoring' because the guy put something like a small ... read more

This update is for today - Saturday 26th as I thought it was necessary to upload this extraordinary story. But I will be blogging about Thursday and Friday as well after this. Don't worry. Emma and I couldn't believe our luck. Jumping from travel agent to travel agent near our unbelievable hostel "D and D Inn" on Khao San Road, Bangkok, we finally found the cheapest deal for a coach journey that would take us to Phnom Penh. Only 700 Baht each (£14). Superb. Moreover, we managed to book the journey with our favourite travel agent - "Coco" - who previously booked us to do the floating markets. We had an early start this morning (Saturday) and woke up at half 6 after another 5hr sleep - just because we are legends and it's cool to ... read more

Monday was my last day in Phnom Penh before heading into Vietnam so,I decided to do a little sight seeing and post some stuff. So,I hired a tuk tuk after showing him my planned route and after some negotiation we agreed on $15. I visited the independence monument which gets light upmat night and the fountains work, but sadly I never got to take any photos. Then just up the road was a statue of the late king. There had been some celebrations a few days before for his birthday or something like that. From there it was off to see Wat Phnom. Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was built in 1373, and stands 27 metres (88.5 ft) above the ground. It is the tallest religious structure in the ... read more

Hostel life On the final day that Cat and Camille were in PP we decided to meet up mid morning so that the girls could have a lie in and I could finally go and collect my visa from the Chinese embassy, and dear readers all well and I have a lovely new visa in my passport YAY! I took the usual tuk tuk ride over to meet the girls. Preparations were under way for road closures as on the 11th there was a bank holiday and there was due to be a parade and the closure of some businesses and restaurants. It took longer than normal to get across town as the road closures had already started, especially by the royal palace, the national museum and the temple near by. After meeting up we formulated ... read more

So it was time to head back to Phnom Penh on the final stage of our trip,in Cambodia. We set off around 8am and headed to a silk farm which helps to support the local community and those affected by the land mines left behind from the war. We were shown around by the owners wife as he had to go to PP as he wasn't well. She didn't spare us the details of his illness but I shall spare you lol. We saw the silk worms and the different life stages, then how they get the silk off the cocoon and the spinning and weaving of the cloth in to scarves. From there we continued our journey and we visited a local market which is famed for it's line of fried tarantulas! Oh and you ... read more

So today, Thursday, it was time to leave PP. We had a 7.30am start and time to meet some new fellow travellers, Phillipa who is heading back to the UK from Oz and Chas and Becky who are two girls just in from Vietnam. Our first port of call was S-21 prison and torture centre. This was previously a school but when Pol Pot came to power he closed all schools and hospitals etc down. He made the people of the city leave and go to work in the countryside to produce food and work on the farms in almost total slavery. We wanted to hire a local guide to go round the prison so we would know and understand the history of the prison, but all the guides were ring fenced as a group of ... read more

Guns! Wednesday was a gun day! Yes dear readers our great plan was to head to a firing range and shoot some real guns and live ammunition! I was awake early as usual and was ready and rearing to go in and the end I had to make sure paddy was up and ready to go and then had to chase him a second time! We headed off to the ATM to get the money for shooting, and to get some breakfast from a local bakery. Not sure what we chose but it was followed by a chocolate doughnut. Our lift arrived promptly at 10am as agreed and we climbed in and headed off. On the way to the firing range we collected another guy on the way but he was with the company who were ... read more
