On the road again ! Pour finir à ... read more

Cabin seemed small on arrival but good storage. The boat is compact but comfortable with a nice dining room and a great Sundeck. We have visited many villages and temples in several towns such as Kampong Cham, Kampong Trolach, Phnom Penh (3 nights docked here), Tan chau, Sa Dec and Cai Be. All have their charms except Phnom Penh. We had several excursions there but it is probably the only place I would not return to for many years. A real discrepancy between haves and have-nots and no apparent effort by the Cambodian government to improve the situation. So far this trip our transportation methods have included: plane, buses, electric golf cart type vehicles, sampans, rickshaws, cyclos, riverboat, bicycle, kayak, tuk tuk, and some even did elephant. My favourite is tuk tuk. They go anywhere and ... read more

I wrote up this blog entry in order to create some photographic inspiration for people to trek in Virachey National Park . First, treks to the Phnom Veal Thom Grasslands (formerly a 7-day adventure) can now be done in 6 days and for cheaper. Furthermore, Habitat ID'songoing camera-trapping survey has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Virachey is still home to abundant wildlife (see the pics below), including clouded leopards, elephants, two species of bears, gaur, rare primates, wild cats, and so, so much more. Virachey has the best preserved core area of any "protected area" in Cambodia, and your trekking fees go directly into the pockets of local porters and to the VNP office so that operations can be maintained. I want to make one thing crystal clear: PRIVATE TOUR OPE... read more

Today started a bit like yesterday, but after having some breakfast we booked a tuk tuk to take us to go and see some rare dolphins. The Irrawaddy dolphins are native to this part of the Mekong with only about 100 left in the world. The fresh water dolphin is very shy and its numbers have slowly decreased due to fishing nets and poisoning from the locals. Nowadays the Laos community fisheries and dolphin protection project compensate for any damaged fishing nets, so the numbers will pick up again. Being driven out to the next village about 15km away to then get on a long tail boat and taken only 10 minutes up the river we got our first sighting. Sitting stationary we waited while scanning the water and got a few more sightings of the ... read more

After having spent a lovely few weeks travelling through Laos I decided it was time to leave for somewhere new - so the next obvious choice was Cambodia. Kate and I got an early morning boat to the mainland where we waited for nearly 2hrs for the bus to take us over the border and south ( remind me again why I got up so early!?) Arriving at the border and being forewarned about the slightly corrupt Cambodian officials! 2 dollars for a ?medical check - which consisted of filling out a form and having your temp taken! And 2 dollars for an exit stamp out of Laos!! Along with the 35 dollars for the visa! With the officials being official and def not in the mood to negotiate we handed over the reddies and had ... read more

Having allowed ourselves a bit of a lay in we headed out for some breakfast at 11.00. Kratie ( pronounced Krachie) is a pretty small town sitting on the side of the Mekong river, in itself not too much to offer apart from in the surrounding areas where theres enough stuff to make it worth a visit for a day or two. Back at the only Cambodian/western restaurant in town Kate and I decided to hire pushbikes for the afternoon. Sitting in the Mekong adjacent to Kratie is a small island called Koh Trong and according to my book is definitely worth an explore on a bike for an afternoon - so perfect. Off we headed down a flight of steps to the boat and got on a waiting taxi boat, which only leaves when its ... read more

Ko Pdao- Homestay on the Mekong Myself, Will and an Italian guy named Flavio decided to venture up the Mekong river to experience a Cambodian homestay. We arrived on Ko Pdao like a scene out of ship wrecked and were greeted by a deserted tourist centre and no sign of anyone who spoke English. After walking some distance up a stoney, dry path we met a nice lady who spoke some broken English. Luckily with the use of our phone and lots of pointing she managed to organise us a homestay. On the island the families rotate the tourists wanting to use the homestay. This is the fairest way to share the profits as it provides a vital source of income. After getting lost and relying on the very limited translation phrases in the Lonely Plannet ... read more
