When planning your trip you always want to unearth places others haven’t been yet, or are at least less frequented en masse by tourists. So when we discovered Kratie (pronounced kra-chey) in the North East of Cambodia, we thought this is definitely the type of place we want to explore. With it being on the way to the Elephant Valley Project (http://www.elephantvalleyproject.org), which we are visiting after our trip to Kratie, everything slotted into place nicely. Although its only a small town, its most redeeming feature is the french colonial promenade that overlooks the island of Koh Trong, and has a look and feel about it that would sit well in most sea fronted european cities. Nevertheless its still run down like most Cambodian cities and is most noticeable with the amount of litter that is ... read more

I'm now in country number 3! We left Vientiane after 2 fairly uninspiring days. We went to a Buddha park out of town on the second day which was my first real experience of a local bus. Most of the buses we take are VIP and as such, are air conditioned and comfortable to suit the Western travellers. To reach the Buddha park however, there was no VIP option, only the local bus! We worked out we needed bus no. 14 so hopped on and try to confirm that this bus was headed to the park, unfortunately no one on the bus spoke English so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best! We ended up at a border crossing to Thailand. Not quite what we had in mind! The bus driver made us get ... read more

The travel days are blending together...the ride from Sen Monorom to Phnom Penh was not as long as the initial ride to the north but none the less, we are tiring of the back seat of the truck...to go from moving most of the hours of each day to spending 6 hours like a pretzel is only marginally entertaining. Bunna and Mombo did however find a short cut which was a much nicer drive than what we'd experienced. The scenery of Mondulkiri is a huge contrast to that of other parts of the country we've seen so far. We now realize that the day we spent climbing during the run took us of a plateau of sorts, now we are descending into the lower lands. There are large pine forests which would look more at home ... read more

The pagoda is being built bit by bit as money is available and the monks themselves stay in a modest wooden long house of sorts. None of them is older than maybe 18 years of age and not a single 'adult' is involved in their surroundings. Mombo takes Jeff to present a small offering of soap and some cash. An experience that won't be forgotten, two of the young monks a ccepting our gift and in turn chant a blessing. Reality slips across dimensions and time wanders somewhere else. To Nathalie is sounds like many voices, strong and magical. A perfect start to the day.... A flaw in our training plan becomes very clear, very quickly. Can you spell the words "long climbs". This is where the climbing starts and does not stop, how can we ... read more

We all agreed last night that camping out was more of a hassle and time commitment than we could stand so in a little dusty town just near where the day finished, we found a guesthouse. Simple but clean and a place to shower off the last two days dust and dirt was all anyone needed.... Who would have imagined we would come to love the thought of a cold shower. The morning started easy, cooling temperatures were welcomed and only a short way into the run we came across Yoga Pig,who politely offered a few grunts when Jeff greeted him with a good morning, hey sometimes all you need is the slightest reason to smile and laugh! The day really just sort of happened along, looking at all manners of animal tracks in the sand, cow, ... read more

Hué (Vietnam) to Banlung (Cambodia): 17th - 27th Jan 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 2591.60 km (.... what is this the same as... go on... what do you think? have a look at our stats at the bottom of the page!) Following Mel's short-lived attempt at cutting Andy's hair with nail scissors, we headed out of Hué. Aware that our proposed route was marked on the map as the "Road without joy" (see photos), we were keen to knuckle down and do it quickly. What followed was some fairly hard-core cycling (to us, anyway.) We discovered that our map is useless - it has been the compass that we have used for navigation in an effort to remain off this main highway. Many roads marked on our map seem to have been put ... read more

We had booked the Phnom Penh – Siphandon (4,000 islands) bus, which left at 6:45. We got on and had been assigned the seats at the front, which was great (no one reclining on top of us) and the air-con was working and there was even a bathroom on board. We were thrilled! Three hours in we stopped for a short food-and-toilet break, and we were making great time. An hour further down the road, however, a moped came out of nowhere into the middle of the highway and the driver had to drive straight into a huge bank of gravel to avoid him. The tyre had been ripped bare, and the brakes were shot. We stopped and eventually they gave up trying to fix things and we had to wait for a new bus. An ... read more

I arrive into Kratie with my new travelling companions, April and Laura from Oz and Rich the laconic ad man from London. It must be pushing 35 degrees and we are hot tired and bothered. What we want, more than anything else is to relax on loungers by a cool sun drenched swimming pool. The man that has sold us our rooms at our new guesthouseThe Dolphin purports to know of some said mysterious nirvana – an up market holiday resort for rich Cambodians. Its half an hour away in a tuk tuk and we all decide to chip in and make the journey. The talk in the tuk tuk turns to expectations.... “I'm so excited – what do you think the pool will be like?!” says April. “I'm thinking – a river with some stepping ... read more

“You falangs, you love sunset, you can't wait to see it! – for Cambodians its different. We are scared of them....When its dark we can't see what is out there. What is coming, creeping out of the shadows. The Khmer Rouge - they hide in the jungle, and when the sun goes down, they come out...” April and Laura – my Ausse friends from the Elephant santuary have joined me on a day trip to discover what else this hidden little gem of Eastern Cambodia has to offer. Our guide – the ebullient Mr Sam is looking all boy about town, in fashionable denims, jaunty white baseball cap, and cheeky dimples. Originally from Kampot, he moved here seventeen years ago when the Khmer Rouge were still hiding in the hills – coming down after sunset to ... read more

Meet Bob. With sallow, sunken skull and steely “don't fuck with me gaze” this is one angry man i'm not going to mess with. In fact we've been told to stay 20m away at all times. Bob is the oldest male here in camp at the Elephant Valley Project in Mondulkiri Province. When he first arrived he'd been worn to death in the logging industry and left without food or water. He is, as a result, very very pissed off. Jack the founder went to his rescue and offered him a banana: “He almost pulled my arm off taking it. At first i thought it was because he was trying to thank me ...Now I realise he was just trying to pull my arm off...He's been called “Bob The Bastard” ever since.” Mondulkiri is in the ... read more
