Sadly, due to unexpected illness, our time in Cambodia is running out so we are forced to change our plans. Initially we were headed north east to Ratanakiri Province, but as we are leaving in a couple of days, we settled with a trip to Kratie, six hours north of Phnom Pehn. The bus journey was an adventure in itself, stopping in places crowded with children and women trying to sell us goodies. Dom opted for some tasty-looking deep fried tarantulas and found them a little spicy - especially the abdomen! Bex, as you’ve probably gathered from previous blogs, dislikes spiders whether dead or alive! Upon arriving in Kratie, a little town forming around a central and very dirty market, we settled in at a hostal to make plans from there. We arranged a trip with ... read more

_______________________ E: Hi folks, Currently I am grounded (yes, I know... again) in Siem Reap, this time with a kinda naughty infection in my foot. But no worries, thanx to Chinese doctors and some antibiotics I am fine and just decided to chill out for a while and get over with this infection before I head on. OK... last time I was writing from Laos. The border crossing was a nice little adventure, but no drama. First with a canoe from Don Det to the mainland, then waiting until enough people are together for a minivan -i.e. 20 people in a 12 seater :-))) - then about a half hour drive, change into a Sawngthaew and another half hour on a dirt track, me holding on at the back. Then comes customs on the Laos ... read more

So after passing my exam it was quickly to leave Sihanoukville and meet up with Amie in Phnom Penh. It was quite urgent as her birthday was in a day or two and I felt I should be by her side. In Phnom Penh we ate cheap cheap Indian food and not much more. I had a package to send home but the day we got there the post office was shut. So was the heart specialist I was going to go to. I instead went to a western doctor who signed me safe to dive and also had a bit of a check-up on me. He said I had some strange white powder on my eardrums. First he thought it was some kind of fungus and then he thought it was some wax but ... read more

What could be worse than a sitting on a bus for 8 hours with cambodian karaokee? Not sitting on a bus and having to push the bloody thing out of 3 foot deep red clay. Our trip from Ratanakiri was doomed from the start... As we left Kratie we met an Aussie girl that had been having transport troubles. She said she was lucky to get through her first week on cambodian transport without a hiccup and if you make it past there, something was bound to go wrong. Well we were two weeks in so it was definetly our time. 30km out from our destination of Ban Lung our bus started veering from side to side like Adrian riding his bike home after a few 'quiet beers' post work. It begun quite comically but ... read more

4,000 Islands - KratieJason & Kirstyn O To say the border crossing into Cambodia was bizarre would be an understatement. After a ferry across from the island we piled into a minivan and drove the five or so kms to the border. After a few kms we turned down a small dirt track, shrowded by forest each side and littered with pot holes (like the hills of Phonsovan). Added to this was the fact they were filled with water from last nights storm and so resembled small lakes! At this stage we wondered whether we were really crossing the border or whether we were being taken into the jungle for other purposes! Also, Jason was not feeling too well by this time (?hungover, ?food poisoning...) and the potholes did nothing to improve his nausea! Needless to ... read more

Well what can i say, it was a interesting lol! We decided to head to Krati as it is known for being a nice little town which you can go to see dolphins at so we thought why not! We decided to go there on the 6.45 bus from Phnom Phen which would take around 6 hours so on monday night we headed out to our usual hot spot-The Drunken Frog, our quiet night was changing as the night went on....it ended up being a very drunken fun filled night! We had 'few' bevvies then decided we fancied a dance so headed to The Heart of Darkness which was amazing, danced the night away and met some nice folk, at 3.45 we left there and headed back to the Frog where we stayed and partied until ... read more

Looking back on my time in Laos I must say that it is one of the most pleasant places I have ever been. It's a lot of people's favorite country in Southeast Asia and for good reason. The people are so friendly and the scenery has managed to defend itself from over development for the time being. When I think of Laos I think of the "Sabai dee" kids waving from the sides of the roads, noodle soup, families congregating under their little basket houses to escape the heat, BeerLao, dust, the Mekong, long journeys, caves, water buffalo and incredibly friendly, chilled out people who could care less about having a rat in the global race of capitalism and consumerism. As a matter of fact, I could imagine them saying “What race? There’s a race?” ... read more

Public bus from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham Another early start, this time to experience our first public bus. Our half-day journey would take us from Siem Reap (Blog: ) to Kampong Cham. The roads were good, as was the bus - none of these packed, dust covered buses we'd feared. No, these buses had aircon, so there was no need to open the windows and let the dust in to cake us from head to toe. It was such a relaxing journey, I actually managed to sleep most of it. Arriving at our destination, the bus was beseiged by tuk tuk drivers and beggars which we feared we'd have to fight through to get off the bus. Fortunately Yong, our group leader, had already agreed with the driver he'd drop us off at the door ... read more

April 12 - 16 It was an early morning to catch the transport bus to the actual bus station at 6:45am. My bus wasn't even there yet and it was suppose to leave at 7:15am but didn't actually head until 8:30. I was the only foreigner on the bus and it wasn't even full although the woman I bought the ticket from said I got the last ticket. Strange. The bus was not at all what the picture was on the ticket, just like the boat to Battambang. Ha. The ticket cost $11, one dollar more cause of the New Year and takes 10 hours. Don't know how this happened but the bus actually got there in the scheduled time. No mysterious breakdowns, no unnecessary stops. It was all good. I was glad I left ... read more

LAOS / CAMBODIA BORDER CROSSING - (April 2007) Tues 3rd April Unfortunately, the crossing of the Laos/ Cambodian border again turned out not to be a straight forward exercise as I had hoped it would be. After catching a small motor boat from Don Det with a few other people first thing in the morning, we travelled for 5 to 10 minutes across the Mekong River to a small town on the main land where we were taken to a small travel agency. After a bit of confusion over what was happening, we were then bundled into two mini buses with around 8 people in each. We then set off towards the border on what was probably the worst road towards a border crossing that I have every travelled down with the road being completely unsealed ... read more
