Later that day we caught the bus to Stung Treng. Stung Treng lies on the Mekong River further north, and is a very popular way of either crossing between Laos and Cambodia. Unforunately, not many tourists chose to spend any time in Stung Treng, which is actually not fair, seeing that it is a vey charming town. However, a pretty tight schedule didn't leave us much time to enjoy the town, or so we thought. We arrived quite late, and of course were greeted by several guest house representatives touting their guest house. We decided to follow one guy to his guest house, but were rather disapointed with the standard of the place. Yes, it was very cheap (US$3) but it was dark, dirty, and musty. When I pointed out the squat toilet to the guy, ... read more

Kim and me have talked about going for a holiday in Cambodia for ages now, and since my contract ended now we decided it would have to be now or never. So, off we went. Our first leg would be the North-East of Cambodia to see the mountains, and then back to Phnom Penh for a night, and then on down south to see the sea. First stop would be Kratie, which is a pretty boring town with 30 000 citizens, but because one can see the infamous Mekong Dolphins there we decided to stay the night. The busride up there was pretty uneventful an quite long, seven hours for 300km. We met a rather nice chap from Austria on the bus, and the three of us decided to find a guest house together. One of ... read more

After a quick overnight in Phnom Penh (enough time to know there's a whole lot more I need to see and do there!) Johanne and I headed for Kratie, which is a small town situated on the Mekong River. It's super mellow with not a whole lot to do but explore the outskirts and relax... fine by me! That afternoon we rented a couple of bikes and went for a ride around the area and were greeted by every single child in the area!! They all wave and yell hellooooo... They are incredibly cute, as I'm sure I've already mentioned. We got bombarded by a bunch of younger boys also on bikes and one in particular was SO keen to practice his english he just kept asking question after question. Johanne's an elementary school teacher back ... read more

before we went to siem reap i saw a poster in the guesthouse for nature lodge in sen monorum and thought we'd be brave and try out this new hostel ignoring all the paranoid warnings of going to unknown places we got from watching the film Hostel the night before. (not a good choice while travelling!) we booked tickets up there for all of us but discovered the next day that yannick and chris had no more money and couldn't get any more moeny out that day because of card restrictions so they were left at the way side and our group was once more reduced to a meagre 3 and we pushed on. it was a 11 hour trip up, we broke down contiually ,it can't really be described as enjoyable but it wasn't as ... read more

After an entertaining border crossing we now arrived in Kratie, Cambodia. We hung around town long enough to see the rare Irawaddy Dolphins but then got the next pick up out of there and headed for Sen Monorom. The journey was memorable, to say the least. 2hrs in a cramped (or so we thought....) pick up, followed by a 2hr wait in the boiling midday sun, and then it was onwards for another 6 hrs on top of a different pick up (with 8 other unlucky souls) along a very bumpy dirt road. The fun really started when it started to rain..... The reward was worth it though and we spent 3 days in a beautiful spot in the middle of nowhere. Waterfalls to swim in, villages to explore and a great bunch of people to ... read more

A day of travelling took us North East to Kompong Cham via Sukon famous for its tasty Tarantulas. Sara, who had been bragging about her intention to try one, chickened out and didn't even go for a peeled frog. I gallantly decided not to show her up by refraining also. From Kompong Cham we hoped to get a boat to the town of Kratie. Unfortunately it turns out that the boat doesn't run any more so the next day we continued the rest of the way by bus. Kratie is probably most famous for being one of the last hideouts of irrawaddy ( or flat-nosed ) freshwater dolphins. They live in a very localised deep bit of the Mekong here and are very easy to see by boat or even from the shore. They look pretty ... read more

Hello and welcome to Cambodia, my third country of this south-east asian tour! After 2 weeks in laos, we felt it proper to move on, and our visas were running out! Post our 10hour bifter bus ride to pakse, we eventually caught a small truck further south close to thge Laos-Cambodia border. This truck was only small, yet 32 people were either sat down, squashed in, or hanging off the back of this truck (about the size of your car dennis!). Sweat was felt in abundance! Our destination was the area known as Si Phan Don (or 4000 islands) and basically is a massive region on the Mekong River of thousands of islands, varying in size from small to mahusive!! We stayed on the relatively small island of Khome, which was the least touristy of the ... read more

Early start again this morning, set the alarm for 6.20am (Need not have bothered due to the roosters being as reliable as ever and waking us up with plenty of time to spare) Got a quick boat ride back to mainland Laos, and set off in a truck with a few other tourists to the border. Firstly we had to "Depart" Laos, which incurred a $2 administration fee (Aka paying for the border workers beer Laos tonight), after that we headed to the Cambodian border and passed through without any problems. When we were in Cambodia we decided it would be best to get a minibus to Kratie, and from there hopefully head for the capital, Phnom Penh tommorrow. The minibus journey was another experience, the "roads" in Cambodia were dirt tracks at best, apparently the ... read more

AHHHHHHH! Cam-bod-ia!! What a first impression! First I suppose a major update is in order seeing as Vang Vieng was my last entry! Looking back, we enjoyed the north of Laos more than the south, but still had a ball travelling south from Vang Vieng to Vientiane, the capital, to Savannakhet, Pakse, Tadlo, and Si Phan Don before leaving Laos. We called Vientiane our "business trip". The city itself is busy with activity including the morning market, which runs all day by the way, and an awkward duplicate of the arc de triomphe on the main boulevard. The city offered lots of very french-influenced architechture and we made the warm, fresh, baguettes a staple in our diet in Laos in general. We stayed 2 nights in Vientiane and filled the days with extending out Laos visas ... read more

After we recouperated from our time with the pigs and too much rough road travel for our tummies to handle we decided to venture out and check out what Kratie had to offer. We rented 125cc motorbikes and drivers for them and went to check out the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. There are supposedly less than 80 or so in the world and 20 or so appen to make a permanent home in 2 deep water pools in the Mekong River on the edges of Kratie. We hopped on the bikes (a first for us here!) and drove about half an hour to the site. There is a national park set up there and they are dedicated to saving this species which first became endagered because of poaching for their oils during the Khmer Rouge regime. ... read more
