Veal Veng (Long paddock) is up Chinese Cry Mountain (so named after a Chinese merchant who cried when his goods carried by an elephant up the mountain were broken). It was one of the last strongholds of the Khymer Rouge and so was ignored by government until last 5 years. It has gone from a community centre, a school and an unmanned clinic to a bustling village. DWA Pursat has been working here and QSA paid for permaculture and weaving training and a shelter and looms. ... read more

The Dept of Women’s Affairs (DWA) has network of offices in all provinces and districts. However, Cambodia is good in developing national plans and paying for staff but not good at funding resources to make it all work. So QSA has supported the DWA in Pursat province for over 7 years by paying for equipment and training for village women in work skills, business skills and personal development. They are focusing on work women can do at home which will reduce number of women moving to Phnom Penh for factory or “entertainment” work. The increase in income will also increase the women’s value to husbands, if they have one (13% are women headed households), reduce domestic violence and help reduce need to take children out of school. ... read more

WEEK 3 - Jeez it's flying by! We left Koh Chang on a bad note after the woman at our guest house had said we were 'the worst brits I have meet - meet no one else like you'. Well biatch if we pay top dollar for hot showers we expect hot showers! Anyway, poor hostess' aside, we hopped on the bus to Poipet, a border crossing from Thailand to Cambodia. Don't worry, it wasn't the crossing that has seen about 20 fatalities last week and some serious gunfire, we made sure we steered clear of that. After the 9 hour odd journey through some once again beautiful countryside we arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia's second largest city. We were lead to a number of poor guesthouses by our Tuk-Tuk driver 'Lucky'' so we decided to ... read more

Cambodia is one of my favourite countries, after so much adversity the people have so much optimism. In Cambodia, we book 5 star hotels because of our dollars strength. They like modern things, interspersed with thousands of years of history in a quirky little style of decor all of their own. The french occupied days left a fondness for fine imitation Luis IX furniture and opulent chandeliers and grand arches and verandahs that some Cambodian hotels have emulated with their own twist - adding bizarelly modern gadgets found nowhere else in the world. Things like Steam showers with telephones, stereos and televisions in there and elevators that are constructed entirely of some wierd perspex with LED lighting like Snoops Dawgs hummer limo. Going down to the lobby is like droppin acid straight from the woodstock ... read more

And off the road for that matter. The tiny village of Chi Phat. nestled in the southern Cardamom mountains, is accessible only by river boat or dirt "road" (on the back of a dodgy motorbike) so we opted for the Boat. The village is part of a project to end poaching and deforestation by giving remote villagers jobs in eco-tourism rather than destroying their locale for much needed income. An NGO initiated and oversees the program but locals operate the facilities and tours. They offer 1-5 day treks using a combination of kayak, bicycle and hiking in whatever arrangement you want. The people who make their way here are an "üp for it" crowd as there is nothing else in the area tourists frequent. For us the village was very reminiscent of Laos; a self-organized community ... read more

Well it’s been a while since we’ve had any real time to sit at the PC with no pressure on time nor access. Over the last 10 days we have had a series of outages starting with water, then Internet then power. Last week was also largely spent in the field, meaning days that started at 0700 and that continued until at least 1600 each day. Dusty, dirty but above all hot work. One of the pieces of equipment we’ve have been using is an Orp meter (measures electrical conductivity in soil). It has an in built thermometer which clocked the other day as 37.5 Celsius! Hot in any language! Unfortunately I got sun burnt on the back of my neck on day 01. Uncomfortable though fortunately only for a short time. I do have a ... read more

CAMBODIA Even only spending a week in Cambodia proved it is close to (if not is) the friendliest country in SE Asia. The people have a joyous, childlike demeanor. They are playful, happy, and laugh at both themselves and everything/everyone around them. One can't help but believe that Thais used to be like this before they let tourism ruin them. Even in a touristy area like Siem Reap (Angkor Wat), they just go about their business pedaling their bikes around, eating all sorts of strange critters (fried tarantulas!), and generally living life to the fullest. It's inspiring. I stayed in a place (River Village Manor) in north Siem Reap, owned by an Australian named Matt. It is away from the center, where all the tourists hang out, and is in River Village, where traditional Cambodian life ... read more

Day 4 - Phnom Penh Today we left Phuket for Phnom Phen. The taxi to the airport was 5 mins late and it was an old skool 1989 Camry which struggled up the mountains. When pepsi paid the driver he gave him a 1000thb note instead of a 100thb note. The driver quickly slipped the note into his pocket but luckily I noticed...... We only got ripped off once today when pepsi was overcharged for a can of pepsi. We landed in Phnom Penh and the traffic was unbelievable. People were everywhere on motorbikes and the drivers were crazy. We checked in with our buddy Khoun Thy. I went to use the fitness centre and it was the most dodgy gym I have ever seen. The bench press was a metal pole with concrete on each ... read more
