While returning home from my last trip, something just struck me and I began to recall all I have learnt in all my trips including the very last one, which was to Colombia. And I came to the following conclusions. Every city has hot tourist centers I used to think that the cities that are mostly advertised by online travel agents are the only ones that have hot tourist centers but I was wrong. Since Colombia is not a hot deal, I would not have thought of it. I only went there on the invitation of a friend I met on Facebook. He is based in Colombia and we became friends on Facebook so he invited me over. Although I enjoyed their coffee and I also enjoyed some kayaking but what really blew me away is ... read more

Setting out The prevailing perception is that people who make a living on their laptops are not confined to one place or one continent. That they can live the life of their dreams while at the same time cut down on their expenses; paying third world prices while earning first world income. All of these and more is true about digital nomads. But everything in life has a flip side. There are a couple of challenges that are associated with working with traveling, below are four of them; 1.Inadequate comfort: The comfort of the chair you sit and the height of the table you use plays a very important role in your productivity. If typically you can sit and work for 8hours in your home, sitting in your very comfortable chair and table, you may find ... read more

So, after a morning at the Genocide museum in Pnom Penh, we set off for our home stay. It was a 3 hour drive, the last hour on dirt roads that had huge ditches to negotiate. If we had been warned what to expect we would have coped better, but we arrived to find we were basically sleeping on the floor, under mosquito nets that had holes everywhere, one toilet (hole in floor) and one wash area, which was a big cistern of water and a jug. We walked up the track to a local wedding, I think we were being paraded round. Good job no one understood us, when Ken asked if the person in Red (the bride) was a chap in drag! After we were fed at the community centre (rice) we watched local ... read more

Sihanoukville (1st attempt) We stayed at backpackers heaven which was a really beautiful hostel, the dorms were huge and had their own communal area and the food was extremely good, not to mention the pool table (can you imagine Becs face on arrival)However it was very quiet and not, well barely any nightlife! After 3 days of trying to go to bars we decided to venture out in the day and see what Sihanoukville had to offer! We walked around an hour and stumbled across a beach called Serendipity where this appeared to be the "place to be". The beach was ok but we were given flyers for bars so that night we got a Tuk Tuk and partied! The next day we decided to walk to Serendipity beach and chill there whilst looking for a new ... read more

The one armed man, former Khmer Rouge (although he was introduced as a Suryavarman supporter who had defected), was a lot more welcoming than he was in during the 90's. Back then, he'd greeted Sokum's tourist bus with guns and a rocket launcher, Sukum had to run out with his hands up shouting "Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I have a bus of 30 tourists and it won't be good to shoot foreign nationals!" Sokum was laughing so hard as he recalled this to us, equally so was the one armed man. People move on I guess, especially when you consider that the Khmer Rouge killed 16 of Sokum's family. I didn't quite get how the arm was lost, but it was through conflict, the guy was miming all sorts of stuff and I think he also ... read more

Hi everybody. As you have noticed we are back on the road. After a delayed flight out of Adelaide we finaly arrived in Siem Reap. We spend one night In Kuala Lumpur and stayed on the airport Sama Sama Hotel payed by the airline company. We arrived a day late in Cambodia so all the plans had to move. The first afternoon we spend buying a shirt from A nice hamburger. We walked all the way back to our Hotel and that was well over an hour. Very happy to see our bed. The next day we went on a Temple tour. Not much riding but a lot of walking. That is not so bad but the heat here is bad. It was 40 degrees the first day that we saw so 6 temples. They differ ... read more

“Moi”.....so the lesson began. Our local guide Channy helped us along our way to basic Khmer competency, always ready as a reservoir of information to challenge our holiday brains. Adept at English after years driving taxis, working in hotels and recently guiding brought him to his current role with Exodus. Working alongside Wan, the gun and up-and-coming international level Cambodian cyclist and mountain biker at aged 24, and our bike transporter, they proved to be extremely fit and ready to shepherd our group with friendly Cambodian hospitality Bantaey Srei was the key focus of day two at the Angkor region. Built in 967AD by the King’s son its intention is for womanly worship. Far smaller than Angkor Wat, Ta Prom (tomb raider film set) and Angkor Thom, our staggered 35km cycle there was met with a ... read more

It's difficult not to be inspired by these countries; they are appealing on so many levels, ranging from beautiful scenery and landmarks, to the downright violent history of international and civil war. However, when you visit them, little evidence of war remains. It's almost as if the countries want us to understand that they are not affected, that they will not dwell on the atrocities which occurred and that they will continue to grow and prosper. After all, Edwin Starr really did get it right when he sang 'War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.' *** Prior to crossing over the border into Cambodia, where the violent Khmer Rouge famously left their footprint, my journey actually began in Bangkok. I only really had a day timetabled there before I was scheduled to depart for Cambodia, ... read more
