Our chapter in Cambodia is now finished. In our first Cambodia blog we wrote about the dark chapter in the history of the country, so here we will focus on our experiences of the present. Our first impression of the country was that the population is somewhat poorer in comparison to Vietnam. In Phnom Penh we met quite a few beggars and the sad sight of people without arms and legs. Even today there are still many landmines in the country, so not the best place for a lonesome trek in the wild. In general the people seem to be very friendly. We can give a few examples. The Cambodians really care about us. We certainly shouldn’t feel tired, so all the time a (new) tuk tuk driver offered his services. Also we shouldn’t have any ... read more

We had a bit of a flying visit to Cambodia's capital Phnom Phen but from what we saw I really liked the city, it was far more developed and less busy than I was expecting! We did a day trip starting at the killing fields where so many Cambodians were killed during Pol Pot's reign. It was devastating to see and hear about exactly what happened there but it was very interesting. After that we went to the S-21 prison where Cambodians had been held and tortured before being taken to the killing fields. It was again very depressing but worth going to see and taking in all of the information about what happened. We booked a VIP sleeper bus for that evening to head up to siem reap. It turned out to be a seating ... read more

From Wednesday to Friday we went to a claypot village called Kompong Chnang. On the busride we had the normal break, where people can eat something. But this break was not too long. The bus wanted to leave, everybody was in the bus, only Sython my project supervisor was missing. So I had to explain the driver with my very good Khmer knowledge (hands and feet) that there is somebody missing. But in the end we all arrived there. On Wednesday we went around the village to a lot of different people, who were all working with clay but on different ways. On Thursday I could have my own try with making pottery, which is really not easy! My hands were forming the pottery, but it was this lady that leaded my hands to form it. ... read more

so, after Sihanoukville we headed to Phnom Pehn for a bit of a break from drinking. Sort of. We visited the genocide museum and the killing fields. A bit depressing but very informative. We met a couple of Scots who took us to a Cambodian club called Pontoon. We didnt notice until we were leaving that it was full of old men and prostitutes! After spending six days in the city we made our way to Ratanakiri, in the North of Cambodia. Very small place but very pretty. We met another Scot here who had lost his bag due to bad bus drivers putting it on another bus. We spent the next few days with him visiting a minority village, waterfalls and swimming in a volcanic lake. we were all heading back to Phnom Pehn but ... read more

Most people we’d met in Laos had said that, by comparison, Cambodia was a disappointment (with the obvious exception of Angkor Wat that is universally raved about). However, nearing the end of a month here we’d have to disagree. What Cambodia lacks in attractions it more than makes up for with its’ people who are delightful. In Laos you are always greeted with a warm “sabaidee” (hello), but further intimacies are hard to extract. In Cambodia you receive an equally welcoming “hello” (sadly not their own “suas’dei”), but it doesn’t end there; the people are that little less reserved, that bit jollier, and hence more approachable. Even the dastardly auto-rickshaw drivers are politeness itself: “Does sir/madam want tuktuk?” We never do, invariably preferring – to their astonishment – to walk. Nevertheless, after our equally polite “no ... read more

OKOK we know, we're sorry. It has been TOO long but... hey we weren't being lazy we were just having fun! And YES it is hard to have time or even the energy to type ANYTHING. So as a result we've decided to do a little skip on Vietnam for now.... This being mostly due to the fact that we don't want to bore you with an emotionless step by step account of what happened and rather would like to entertain you with stuff thats fresh in the brain! Soooo readersss... here's part one of Cambodia! Cambodia Part 1: During the journey by boat from vietnam we were accompanied by 3 other Welsh girls who obviously were on the same cheapskate budget as us, seeing as the other 10 odd people in our Mekong tour had ... read more

I'm in and out of Cambodia, both for visa runs from Thailand (it's by far the cheapest and easiest option) and for business. We're working on investment in corn farming project - for more on that whip over and take a look at my company site FoodWorks. I've written about the LeBiz Hotel in a previous post and that's a great option for a pure quick over-night stay. But I find it a little spartan. White walls and a somewhat antiseptic atmosphere. Also not quite in the centre of the night life. For the absolute opposite try the iconic Foreign Correspondents Club - or as a friend of mine calls it somewhat lewdly, "The Foreign Cocksuckers Club". He's not big on journalists! The FCC is one of the oldest and bes... read more

(N) After bidding a fond farewell to Bodhi Villa, the four of us jumped on a bus to Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s main beach town, Party Central and a firm fixture on the South East Asia backpacker trail. We skipped it and took a boat from there to Koh Rong, a tropical island three choppy hours by boat away. Matt and I weren’t in particular need of beach time but Jamie and Lisa were – they hadn’t been at the sea for months and had two months of tough travelling in India ahead of them – and we figured it would be a great end to our time together. And it was. We shared a nice bungalow on a hill overlooking the beach, swam during the day, listened to music and chatted away in the evening. We also ... read more

Hello family, friends, lovers and enemies! How are we all? I hope that you are happy and healthy. Well, Saturday night bought a new experience to my life...a Ka'mai nightclub! Seriously, two of the most surreal, funny, bizarre and disturbing hours of my life! But, that's a story for another time! Yesterday we spent the afternoon on a boat trip, venturing North up the Mekong...think less Apocalypse Now, and more country dandy up the Mississippi! We set off at about 14:30, with the plan to be heading home for the sunset....lovely! We boarded our raft down the most rickety gangplank you can ever imagine - suffice to say, the swaying boat, lapping waves and nervousness did make for some amusing embarkations! I was able to sit at the very front of the boat (Kate-Winslet-Titanic-esque!), making the ... read more
