Day 274, 1st March Ranong - ferry to Kawthaung and back - Ranong Yes, This is a Memorablog! So don’t think the following info is still valid - check before you go. Anyway, the point is (back to 2002) that this is the beginning of the last month that us guys will be cycling together. Four weeks from now, hopefully, we will arrive in Singapore and I’ll be booking a flight to jet off and see Kathryn - all being well? Nine months have passed since England - how time goes on, regardless of what we try and do to alter that. We all get older, but the worst possible scenario for me would be to say in the future that I’d regretted doing something because I hadn’t had the time. Rory set off this morning ... read more

For the first time in my life I feel I have been to the edge of the earth. I sailed in forgotten waters off the coast of a mostly forgotten country, was rescued by squid fishing gypsies, walked on dense uninhabited islands and virgin stretches of sand, dove lush reefs as well as devastated reefs, swam into nurse shark caves, and even encountered the Myanmar Navy, all in 6 short days in late November. My adventure began November 21st when I flew a puddle jumper from Yangon to Kawthoung, an island bordering Thailand on the Myanmar side. We touched down 3 times in that journey and only once did we have a smooth landing. Have you ever landed front wheel first in a mid size passenger jet? If you have you probably haven't lived to ... read more

So today I had to cross the border to get my visa stamped. It is amazing that only about 2 kilometers from Mae Sot it is a whole different world. No paved roads, people living in thatched huts. It was very enlightening to see. I went with my friend from the clinic KD John. Basically you just crossover a bridge and you are in Burma after paying the SPDC 500 Baht (I had no choice - I really did not want to support thr Burmese government). Upon arrival we met with people who he knows that are "missionaries" (he is not religious) who have been starting a church in the Myawaddi community. They were really friendly as are all the Burmese and gave us a meal. It's amazing how gracious people who have so little are. ... read more

In order to renew my Thai visa, I decided to cross over the border into Burma for the day. The most popular border crossing is far north in Mae Sai, however from where I was in Mae Hong Son, it would mean a lot of back tracking to places I had already visited. So I decided to head further south to Mae Sot, in the Tak Province. A 10B Songtaew got me from Phacharoen Market in Mae Sot to the border and from there I had to walk over the 'Friendship Bridge' and into Burma. It seemed so simple. There is restricted foreign travel in Burma however, and they held on to my passport at the border. I was only allowed a day and could not go any further than Myawadi. I was met by crowds ... read more

:"...Summers in rangoon, luge lessons, when i was naughty iwas placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, we used to make meat helmets..." Dr. Evil, 1997 We had a frantic fight on our hands to complete the impossible and travel from Phang Nga province to Ranong and then over the border into Myanmar in 1 day. A tall order for superman and we thought we would be able to do it easily, oh how wrong we were! As already mentioned we did an overnight trip through the islands of Phang Nga and visited James Bond island, and stayed on a floating Muslim village for the night, all very exciting things. On the return to Phang Nga village we decided, or in truth were persuaded by our guide that we would be much wiser to ... read more

Here are some old pictures from a trip I took to Myanmar for a visa run. I was only there for a day but it was definitely an experience. I crossed over from Mai Sot, a relatively well-off border town with nice restaurants, hotels and internet cafes to a vastly different place. Myanmar's military government has a strangle-hold on the country and it's people. They've committed horrendous human rights violations and turned Myanmar, once the richest county in Asia, into the poorest. To give you an idea of how poor, the first thing I saw when I walked through the border was a car-sized crater in the middle of the road and a goat walking aimlessly down the sidewalk. To get a better idea of what’s going on there you can check out soros.org/burma. It's ... read more

Every thirty days I have to make a Visa Run, where I have to find the nearest border of Thailand and exit the country, so I can turn around a get a new visa. The 3-hour drive up to Ranong, Thailand and then a 40 minute longtail boat ride across the strait and I'm in Burma. Once again. This time I met with my Burmese friend by accident as he was now dressed in an official uniform. He could legally waltz me around his shanty town and give me a tour. With me is Evelyn Rodriguez of San Jose, CA, a woman that survived the tsunami on the island of Ko Phi Phi. Also joining me is Travis Mitchell, the young man from Boulder, CO that overheard my conversation about returning to Thailand in a cafe ... read more

In Myanmar it is an established guidebook fact that you can actually avoid paying entrance fees without incurring the wrath of fellow travellers for being a hairy-tight-ass! For here in Myanmar, you are depriving an evil tyrannical power of money, ever so slightly weakening him and thus contributing to his ultimate downfall...or NOT! And so it was, as I roamed around Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred pagoda in the world in the first shards of morning light, enthusiastically avoiding the $5US admittance fee I had my first shart! Shart: when one farts and a little piece of s__t comes out. There's no doubt that Shwedagon is a spectacular Pagoda, However if you’ve just been on a Pagoda pilgrimage tour through Thailand and Myanmar, and have seen these phallic symbols competing for prominence on every hill top ... read more

An early rise in the morning and off I was to make my first visa run to Myanmar (Burma). Visas in Thailand need to be renewed every 30 days to avoid steep fines. My two friends, Hayden and Cynthia, had made this trip once before, so having them as companions was a true asset. The road from Khao Lak to Ranong, Thailand is about 180 kilometers (112 miles) and the road is no different than any other road here: two lanes and filled with scooters and slow-moving trucks. As we set off on our day trip, the light traffic allowed us to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of tropical hillsides and majestic mist-covered peaks. It was what you always expected to see in Thailand. The drive lasted nearly three hours, buzzing past scooters laden with two, three ... read more
