BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, BRUNEI - 24th March Brunei has oil and gas to thank for its prosperity and unlike other countries, tourism is not an essential source of income. Oil was discovered in 1929 and Brunei has prospered ever since despite the Japanese invasion. It became independent in 1983 and the present Sultan who resides in Istana Nurul Iman, the Palace of Light rules. There is no income tax and continues to be one of the worlds richest nations per capita. We had a distant view of the Palace of Light from the river before heading to one of the many mosques. The second mosque overlooking the Kampung Ayer (stilted village) is one the most magnificent in South East Asia. Built in 1958 by British architects it is surround by its own man made lake. Been reading blogs about Brunei especially the capital Bandar Seri Begawan and it made me curious to experience the country and find answers to my questions. Arrived around 2am on the 22nd of April 2016. Everyone is picked by private cars except me. Taxis are not available at this time. Decided to familiarize the airport and glad to find a city guide posted on the wall outside. It has every details on how to go around the city especially the bus numbers. There's also a mosque of modern Islamic design that I enjoyed taking pictures. It was very touching and a bit dramatic to be closer to this house of prayer for it's my first time. Ooops... if you don't have enough $1 bills, you can exchange at the Car Park Office outside the airport and ... read more

Saturday, December 19, 2015 This is our first day at sea. In usual fashion, Todd is up early, 5:50 am, everyone else was up at 7:30 am. Today is a day of celebration. First, Todd and Cindy’s 28th wedding anniversary and then we are celebrating the life of Marcy’s life by spreading her ashes at sea. This blog will be short since we are at sea and most of the first part of the day was prepping for spreading Marcy’s ashes. Cindy, the kids, Erv and I went to the international dining room this morning for breakfast. We always love the cook to order meals. We love our muffins and other breakfast selections. Today, the seas were rough. Jenny, Michael and I ended up wearing patches because it was too much. One of the staff members ... read more

Celebrating with the Sultan We arrived in Brunei during the month-long celebrations for the Sultan's birthday. Having been postponed due to Ramadan, a big event was taking place in the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan, throughout August. While searching for a place to have breakfast, we noticed a large crowd gathered in and around the marquee erected in the town centre. From a park ledge we looked into the sea of smartly dressed members of the military and public servicemen and servicewomen. To our surprise the Sultan of Brunei, his brother and two sons were out greeting the public as part of his birthday celebrations. Many people were walking around clutching white boxes and it wasn't long before one was placed in our hands - complementary birthday cake and water for everybody! We followed alongside a ... read more

After boarding the boat on the Brunei River, we sped toward a mangrove area where we stopped to spot some long tail monkeys. Although we did spot some, the shots I got were of their backs as they stayed far up in the trees and were camouflaged by the leaves. Next stop a village over the river on stilts, where we were welcomed by a family to sit on their porch and enjoy some snacks they had put out for us. We were allowed inside to look at their house which was unusual indeed. It was very spacious as a family of 25 lives there. The two front rooms were very ornate. The whole house was air conditioned but not as fancy in the other parts of the house. They have running water and electricity but ... read more

BRUNEI - Bandar Seri Bagawan (BSB) Brunei, (pop 410,000) a small sultanate, has the largest oil reserves in south east Asia. This tranquil nation is the realization of a particular vision: a strict, socially controlled religious state where happiness is found in pious worship and mass consumption. It has the largest water village in the world dating back over 1000 years. Kampung Ayer is home to an estimated 20,000 people and consists of 28 contiguous villages on stilts in the Sungai Brunei. The Brunei Times reports, that to bring more remote areas into the fold, the Information Department's Nationhood and Community Section have introduced a programme to strengthen the relationship between people and Government. It involves a face to face approach to raise awareness and produce a civic community that loves their religion, nation and Sultan ... read more

Arriving in Kuching on Sunday we were very surprised at the lovely town that we found, ditching our belongings we walked around the town and found the people very welcoming and friendly. Kuching is a large town with the Sarawak river running through it, we walked along the river which had beautiful gardens and grassed areas. Young and old people were sat relaxing and stalls which sold drinks and ice creams, while across from the park a road and busy restaurants and shops selling spices, and tourist shops selling timber cats and tribal art. Cats you say! well Kuching means Cat. so every cat is Kuching is quite special not a scraggy Moggie to be found' they are all well fed and healthy and clean even for street cats. In the evening we walked around the ... read more

On a windy October morning, the estuary of Bandar Seri Begawan’s river is buzzing with activities. From the tables of a food stall, the locals are waking up along with the sunrise while nursing cups of coffee, watching a parade of sweaty runners and parents holding their kids’ hands. While there’s a dearth of cars plying the wide roads, the busy vibe of the bus station near the river is obvious. On the river, a number of motorboats glide through the waters, going to and from the Kampong Ayer. A host of vendors are shouting, announcing their wares to passersby. This Friday tableau is common to someone who grew up in a city. People like me who grew up in Manila often take such chaos for granted. But to witness such bustle in the capital of ... read more
