Brunei Zaplatily jsme o par ringosu navíc a pronajmute auto nas vyzvedlo u GH v Miri a zase nas u predem objednaného hotylku v Brunei vyhodilo. Aj prejezd hranic typu bulharsko-turecke byl bez problemu. Cestou jsme sice pasovali z Malajsie do Bruneie jakysi motor a krabici, nicméně ridic-paserak to mel celkem zmanagerovane, takze vse klaplo a my byly ... read more

Brunei, maybe one of the smallest countries that we have visited but it is also one of the richest, in fact you can see the oil wells at the side of the road busily collecting black gold. We paid a flying visit and checked out the Royal Regalia Musuem, which is home to all the gifts that the Sultan of Brunei has been given by foreign dignatories. To prove that this is a man that has everything the Sultan's solid gold chin rest is on display. In the shape of an arm, the hand cushions your chin. (Look carefully at the flag if you don't believe me!) I suspect the museum was built in order to solve some of those awkward 'what an awful present moments - what on earth am I going to do that?' ... read more

We were pleasantly surprised with Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB).We had been told that it was a boring city and yes, it was quiet (a bit eerily quiet for a capital!) but it was very well-kept and a pretty place. Brunei is a very strict Islamic country so the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited. The lack of bars and clubs meant that after dark, the city is unsurprisingly deserted. A Spanish backpacker called Edward told us that after he asked a local woman what there was to do in the evenings, she replied "Go home and sleep." It is a lot more expensive than normal SE Asian prices. So, after getting dropped off by the bus, we headed to the only budget digs in town - the local youth hostel. It was gender-segregated dorms and ... read more

Panorama - My family! There's no other like it. You know you're getting old when your brother turns 50. But what better way to come together as a family than for the four of us...ie. Glenn, Suzy, Mum and myself to hop a flight to Brunei to help celebrate the event. We haven't spent time together on a holiday since...thinking, thinking... I suppose, the last time we came together was for mum's 70th birthday bash early 2008. But before that....crikey! I think we were kids! The laughs started early...even before we arrived at the airport. Perhaps it was a few nerves and the excitement of travelling together, and wondering whether we could all spend 5 days together again. Check in at Brisbane Airport went smoothly except for a little altercation with the clerk who insisted that ... read more

The country of Brunei is a tiny little Muslim country on the island of Borneo, sandwiched between parts of Malaysia. There's really no tourist draw or anything that we even wanted to see...but the plane tickets were about $20 and the flight only 20 minutes. We figured, when were we ever going to be able to visit Brunei again? So we booked an overnight trip to Bandar Seri Begawan on our way to Kuala Lumpur. There were only about four hotels in BSB, so I randomly picked the Jubilee Hotel because they offered to pick us up from the airport. When we walked into our suite, we were transported back to 1970. It was so retro, which turned into a theme throughout our brief time in Brunei. We set out on the streets, using the two ... read more

DAY 11 Wow! My muscles have never felt like this before! Every part of my body aches, but my thighs and calf muscles are screaming and neither Stuart or I can walk very well. We look like a couple of old people. Oh hang on! We are a couple of old people! Today we are leaving Kota Kinabalu and Malaysia to go to Brunei. So we have a nice breakfast of left over cornflakes and do our best to walk with our backpacks along the seafront to the bus station. I am sure that the walk will help to loosen everything up. It seems like a very long walk to the bus station, but is probably only a mile and it is very hot this morning. So when we finally arrive we are suitably sweaty. We ... read more

We arrived at Bandar Seri Begawan and rolled up at the KK Soon Hostel with its GIANT bedrooms and truly horrendous bathrooms. After a little wander and having a delicious vegetable roti we came across the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, all lit up in the darkness. It's an amazing sight. Almost all materials for the mosque were imported so it boasts marble from Italy, granite from Shanghai, crystal chandeliers from England and carpets from Saudi Arabia. The dome of the mosque is also covered in pure gold. Spectacular. On our one-and-only day in BSB we visited the Royal Regalia Museum which featured the history and life of the Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, the chariots he travelled in during his coronation and many MANY gifts sent to him from other countries. What do you buy the man ... read more

It deals in dollars, the majority of it's population speak English and it has one of the wealthiest rulers on earth. Yet not much is known about the Kingdom of Brunei, sandwiched between the states of Sarawak and Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. Perhaps this is because it is now one of the smallest countries on the planet despite it's empire having formerly included all of Borneo and Southwest Philippines. The country is blessed with some of the biggest oil fields in the world and subsequently has been able to spare most of it's above ground resources. Brunei has some of the most intact primary rainforest, a rarity in Malaysia these days. The Sultan reigns supreme here, holding three key cabinet positions: prime minister, defence minister and finance minister. However, the people of Brunei also benefit from ... read more

Day 1 - 17/7/10 Off again - ah what adventures lie in wait for us this time... Here we go again flying Royal Brunei (a Muslim alcohol free airline) and true to form we brought out a bottle of Shaw & Smith Sauvignon Blanc and requested that it be chilled to have with our dinner. The flight attendants were extremely helpful and brought it out nicely chilled when dinner arrived - in our section we were the only ones drinking wine for dinner - how uncivilised were the rest? Landed at Bandar after an uneventful flight and stayed at the Radisson as guests of Royal Brunei as they had initially stuffed up our booking - so here we are in Brunei - where they're celebrating the Sultan of Brunei's 64th birthday celebrations. We went for a ... read more
