Talking about dolphins, and other marine life, yesterdays post closed out early because I took an available opportunity to get email sent from the Chief Officer’s cabin this time. I think it helped that a shot a cool still sequence of the Second Officer’s wife, Sonya, so I got to use the system early. The Fuji 6.02 still cam is impressive and I’ve been getting cool shots. Besides this, we were 8 miles off Dakar earlier and I was told that you can get cellphone reception for 20 minutes so I got the chance to phone home from 'Monkey Island', the highest point you can safely get to on the ship. This was a supremely surreal... read more

Title: Travelblog from Schwann-at-sea - Chapter 5 - Days Wednesday 10th Day 4: Just another peaceful day. No transits, just some trance. Getting to know the ship, the crew, and my fellow passengers. Got a good connection with Willy, the 2nd engineer, who says he’ll try and get this journal out via email tomorrow, so I’ve been preparing a movie to amaze and astound. Eat this blog from deep Atlantic, a.r.k.! Thursday 11th Day 5: Another peaceful day. I worked in the afternoon on my book, and, like this ship, it is hopefully going somewhere. I should note that being at breakfast with the Captain and my fellow passengers at 8.00 AM in the morning is, IMHO, an ungodly hour of the morning for pleasantry and I have therefore given notice ... read more

So it's 2.05AM Sunday 30th May 2004 and there's now less than a week to go. Surrounded by every increasing piles of discarded cardboard and plastic I stumble towards departure with an ever decreasing sense of reality. I remember once writing somewhere; "it never get's weird enough for me". I guess the words themselves don't mean much, it's what they're hotwired to, things words can't do by themselves, but it feels like I'm arriving at some kind of cut-off point, a point where it all comes down to throwing onself at the mercy of the elements, and trusting those that, one hopes, can safely navigate them. This is like my first solo expedition as a broadcast TV road warrior carrying all the battery chargers, spare clips plus all the junk you need to make you feel ... read more

Sunday, June 6 th 2004 It wasn't easy cramming my studio into a suitcase so it took me nearly two months and without the help of Daene, I would probably have missed the boat but I was nearly ready by the time the Safmarine driver arrived at 10.00 AM on Sunday. This was not to be the only time on Sunday I was to be grateful not to be traveling by air, but more on that later. The ship is berthed at Milnerton container terminal and boarding is no problem, until I discover that my wife hadn't packed my Berry Blaze or toothpaste. With a bit of cell phone persuasion she drops off the missing objects but not too long after that I unpack my photographic equipment but to my horror I find that I've left ... read more

Part 12 I am sitting on my bed in my excellent room at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in Johannesburg.... wrapping my self around my third scotch and soda. Another travel day from hell, perhaps the Gods had ruled that I shouldn't go to Vic Falls and forgot to tell me!!! Got myself organised early fortunately, having been branded a trouble maker after my check-in troubles at the hotel, there are no hotel porters available and I get to lug my own bags to reception… and set off for the airport to be there by 11 for my 1 p.m flight.. Checked in and they then told me that the plane was delayed and not expected to leave until 2.15... fair enough these things happen... 2.15 came and went, no plane... 3.00 it arrived and 3.30 ... read more

Africa » Mali » District of Bamako » Bamako June 28th 2004

I am currently in Bamako, the capital of Mali, as I write this, my town, Ouelessebougou, not being sufficiently advanced to have access to the internet. Bamako is a vibrant, bustling city of more than a million, but it is very much a local place with sidewalks filled with street vendors. There is no 5 star hotel per se, but of course there are some luxurious accomodations and fancy western restaurants for the occasional foreigner who stumbles into this city. The national museum is pretty impressive, but unfortunately Mali, once the home of three great empires, retains little of its great heritage. Most artifacts have long ago been pillaged and plundered. I visited in Bamako the national zoo, a journey better ... read more

Africa » Morocco June 26th 2004

MOROCCO “Forty days in Morocco!!! Are you mad?” screamed my neighbor, Riaz. His perplexity was natural. English is rarely spoken in Morocco and the language barrier may create problems. Being determined, I boarded Emirate Airlines Boeing 777 on June 26, 04 for Casablanca. There were nearly 300 passengers. All applauded when the airplane made a smooth landing. I joined them and appreciated a good custom. Immigration formalities were brief and soon I found myself on a waiting train right in the terminal area. In about 30 minutes, the train reached the city. I had a reservation for a hotel which was located next door. In a moment, I was at the reception of Ibis Moussafir with a printout of my Internet booking. Never before finding a place to straighten my back was so safe and so ... read more

Africa » Botswana June 21st 2004

This entry is rather late, seeing that I only got a blog today. It accounts my experience of a support call to Maun, Botswana (Africa). Apologies in advance for the length, it is a cut & paste I sent to family after arrival. The pics are available in the album section. Well. Coming to the end of my first day. Flight up was awesome. Driving through Cape Town at 05:30 in the morning is strange. Well, was earlier, I think, about 05:15. You know those guys that stand on the side of the road selling newspapers? Well, they are at that time, maybe earlier. It's alive! Never thought they were out at that time. Anyway... Airport check-in and stuff went smoothly. Just normal domestic stuff. 107 knot tail wind. Shaved 20 mins off the flight. Then ... read more

Africa » South Africa June 8th 2004

Well, I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, at least, not out of the country. But perhaps by creating a travel journal, I've started along that path... I'm sure there's some pithy saying to accompany that sentiment. So, if anyone out there needs info on South Africa, especially Cape Town, give me a holler. I'm more than willing to dispense what advice I am capable of offering. Pia.... read more
