At the moment I am by Lake Malawi (Kande Beach) after some hefty days of travelling. Lots has happened since my last blog and seeing as I didn't write much then I have a lot to tell you! We arrived on Zanzibar on the 8th August after spending one night by the beach in Dar es Salaam. It was a beautiful white sand beach with a cool campsite with hot showers - something of a luxury here. The ferry across to Zanzibar takes about 2 hours, during which about half the passengers become very sea sick and wonder why on earth they are putting themselves through this. It was very hot on the ferry and even though I dont get sea sick usually I felt terrible and spent most of the journey on the top deck ... read more

After an amazing experience in the Okavango Delta, we made our way into the Caprivi Strip. Originally, Namibia had no access to the Zambezi River, which was a major trade route. When the British still had control of Botswana, they were able to negotiate for a plot of land near the river, which today is called the Caprivi Strip. The Caprivi Strip is a long strip of land surrounded by water (from the Kavango River to the Zambezi River) and ends at the four corners of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. That night, we stayed at Martin's Drift, which was in Katima Mulilo on the Zambezi River. The next afternoon, we were picked up in a larger safari 4x4 and headed off into Chobe National Park. Chobe, which is located in Botswana, had much different terrain ... read more

Well my time in Arusha has come to a sad and final close (or not). Although something deep inside me says that an uncontrollable force will draw me back to the unpleasant whistle stop in the future. While I still won't discount the distinct possibility that my next flight will likely find its way to Arusha (whether by an honest mistake, crash or hijack) I do sincerely hope that my time there is now complete. What is there to say about my third trip to Dar Es Salaam though? Not much really besides my adventures with the various Consulates, Embassy's and High Commissions downtown and a big day trip to Tanzania's National Museum. Saturday afternoon I stepped off the bus from Arusha to find an overwhelming stench of garbage, raw sewage and dead animals envelope my ... read more

It's my second-to-last night here in the Blue Mango, so I'm starting to get reflective on my trip so far. I've been so many places, met so many incredible people, and seen some pretty amazing things on my journey. At times I have been hopeless, lonely, and angry. Others, I've been contented, amazed, and humbled. Overall, the past two months have been an incredible experience that I would not trade for the world. I have learned that reaching out to others always pays off. I've learned to be critical of even the most put-together, well-meaning organizations. I've learned to be patient with myself, and how to be patient with others when it seems there is nothing in common between you. I've learned loads about all sorts of cultures - Masai, Chagga, Buganda, even Irish. I've learned ... read more

It's great to hear from everyone again. It's me, the evil destroyer of photographs here. My dark plan to permenently delete all of our future memories of the fantastic people and places we encountered in Ghana and Burkina has come to fruition... phwharr, ha ha har. Now for my next act..... You'll be pleased to know that after a few days of what politely might be called 'the trots', or less politely 'the raving splats', our stomachs are retuning to normal function. This issue did lead to the slight abbreviation of our wonderful walk in the lands of the Dogon. I haven't yet read all of what Eric wrote yesterday, but I feel certain that the disaster of the photos might have eclipsed the fabulous walk. So here's a few of my unworthy highlights: On the ... read more

Today, I saw the pyramids. And yes, the Great Pyramid is very large. I opted for a tour organized by the hotel. Just me, the tour guide and the driver. First, they took me to Islamic Cairo to visit a mosque. It's a beautiful mosque, and very different in design from the Turkish mosques. We also climbed a minaret to get a view of the city. Down below was the city of the dead, a cemetary. And looking out I could see perhaps a couple of kilometers in every direction. There is a lot of pollution and heat here to really obsure the view. Cairo is a huge sprawling city, but it's impossible to see from one end to the other. It's very monochromatic, you really see only one colour as you look: a sandy brown, ... read more

Our last day in Dubai began with a city tour of Dubai. We were driven around to Bur Dubai, Deira Dubai, King's Palace, GOld Soukh, Gold Centre, Burj Al Arab, Canal, Madinat Jumeriah etc etc. After the tour, we headed to the Karamah Shopping Complex and we all bought a few things and had a nice dinner at Karachi Darbhar Restaurant. We had a full meal with fresh juices and dessert for 80 Dhirams (20 bucks). We then headed back to our hotel and took a shuttle to the airport. On the shutle we met an interesting drunken fellow who had just come back from fighting in Kabul, Afghanistan. Our flight departing to Mauritius was at 2:30 am and the duty free shopping at the airport kept us occupied till then. Duty free sold everything including ... read more

All ready and packed...and a little bit nervous. My flight leaves at 9:30pm tonight and i will land at 8 or 9am tomorrow morning in Windhoek. I have to stay in a place called the Cardboard Box for a night....which sounds dubious although the website looks quite nice!! Apparently there is another girl going with the same company on my flight tonight and we will stay together in this Cardboard Box place before being moved onto the sanctuary on friday. Im not sure what kind of internet access il get out there, but hopefully it wont be to sporadic and il be able to keep in touch with all of you!! Lots of love, Hannah xxxxxxxxxx... read more

Well here we are after spending the last few days walking from village to village along, and up and down the escarpment that runs through this beautiful part of Mali. Our jornuey here was absolutely one of the most interesting jorneys as of yet, both in watching the landscape change and the events of the day. Ougadougou 4:00 am, alarm sounds. The boys get up headed to the bus station to catch their 6:00 am bus. Complication 1 at 4:15 - the taxi driver has not shown up, eek! Stroke of luck #1 - the hotel security guard wakes from his position sleeping on the reception desk (yes, I mean sprawled out on top of it as if it were a king size mattress) and escorts us into the eerie darkness of a city that sleeps. ... read more

Having a great time here so far in Tanzania, we are just back from an overnight bush camp in the Serengeti. You literally just pitch your tent up in a designated area but there is no fence to keep anything out so you really are in amongst everything. There was one pit toilet to use but as this had definitely seen better days the preferred option was to use the great outdoors instead - even knowing what was out there, which proves just how bad it was! We were one of three lucky (!) tents that had lions sleeping outside throughout the night. We were on the edge of the camp & the safari guides (who were safely locked up in a caged area, they said this was because they had to stay along with the ... read more
