Well it's been another two weeks in the village and not a whole lot has changed. Since the kids are out of school I mostly pass my time playing football with the boys, going to the well (it has not rained in some time), napping, working out using the jerrycans of sweety water, and finally, helping out with some of the construction that needs to be done. There is a lot that needs to be built and I would like to leave something solid and useful behind before I leave. Our first project is building a platform for one of the water containers using bricks and concrete. With any luck it should be done sometime before 2007. While I have noticed travelling through Africa and other parts of the world how much workers rest and how ... read more

Well it’s here at last, my final blog entry. I’ve been home from Kenya for over two weeks now, and it sure feels great to be back. Kenya was great, I’m looking forward to going back sometime, but it’s not the same as home. For the most part, the Kenyan people were so nice and gracious in welcoming me, a foreigner, into their midst and making me feel as much at home as possible, but after a while, seeing the poverty and need on a daily basis definitely wore on me. The best way I can describe it is that it made me feel sick to my stomach to realize that I would be leaving to come home to a nice home and loving family while millions of Kenyans would continue living in the same struggling ... read more

Labe was a pretty nice town. Everyone had little motorcycles, and that was the main way to get around. We would hire two when we wanted to get anywhere and it usually worked out, although one time one took me to the wrong hotel and Alex was there worried when I didn't arrive. They had a pretty good market full of clothes that come in huge shipment containers from American Goodwill....all the Goodwill rejects are available for purchase over here. You see a lot of funny shirts... shirts with weird slogans, old mission trip or family reunion shirts and shirts with bands that I vaguely remember. Oh and in case you were wondering what happened to all the billboards in America once they are taken down... they are actually all here too, because they are a ... read more

Well we thought Luxor was bad but the further south you go in Egypt the hotter it gets! Yesterday was a barmy 50 degrees which is rather warm and apparently they can get up to 55- 56 deg on a truly hot day. Fair enough though as it is the middle of the Egyptian summer and we are only a couple of kms from the Sahara Desert! Anyway on Thursday morning we had a very early start (3am!) in order to travel south through the desert in convoy to Abu Simbel. Yes thats right a convoy with full military escort! We were happy to be baby-sat though, as Abu Simbel is only 40 km north of the Sudanese border (say no to civil war, ethnic cleansing and kids with AK-47s). It was a bit over 3 ... read more

Friday morning we flew Air Mauritius from Mauritius to Johannesburg International. We arrived at our hotel around 1:30pm which was close to the airport. We then headed to a large shopping mall where we spent the afternoon after a meal at Nando's restaurantant. The mall had over 250 stores and was quite nice. We were quite impressed with the infrastructure in Johannesburg especially with their motorways. After a quick pizza dinnner we headed back to the hotel for a early night. Saturday morning we headed on a tour of Johannesburg. First we visited downtown which was interesting. Numerous times our tour guide told us to keep the cameras and video camera down as we were going through rough areas. He mentioned they will break the glass if they see valuables at a traffic light. There were ... read more

*Though Forecariah is a "city," sheep and goats wander the streets and often get in the way of cars. Any food dropped on the ground is quickly devoured by chickens, who wander into the house to escape the rain. *The electricity comes on randomly, for an average of about 2 hours per day. I've taken to cheering when it turns on and booing when it turns off. If the current is on, the family's TV is also on, in addition to a broken radio that has been playing one of two or three cassettes for the last month and a half. Cheesy pop and dance music from Europe and the US are popular, as well as local music. The TV is tuned to either local news, music videos, or terribly cheesy soap operas dubbed over in ... read more

Hey everyone! I'm visiting Conakry for my last chance to use internet until the end of September. So far the city has lots of large but dilapidated buildings, muddy streets, and cars with crazy drivers and no traffic laws. We had the rare opportuinty to go to a European supermarket where I got real cheese and yogurt!! (though it cost me a week's pay) I had fun in Labe on the rest of my site visit. Labe has a huge market that I wandered in for hours before buying some local jewelry and fabric. It is set up like a labarynth of stalls and narrow aisles, mostly covered with scrap tin that keeps most of the rain out. You can find almost anything you need there, if you spend enough time dodging crowds, pickpockets, and mudpuddles. ... read more

Hello Everyone! Well, we have had a wonderful time here in Africa. I guess I'm going to have to upload those pictures when I get home. Sorry about that, but we have some amazing pics that I'm really excited to share with you all as soon as possible! Our snorkeling adventure was fun (a little cold, but who cares!) and we had an amazing night at the Forodhani Gardens, this green space in Stone Town that bursts alive at night with tons of vendors selling grilled kabobs of every fish and meat imaginable! We wandered around and ate until we burst! The next day we thought that we would just become beach bums, but Vaughn called this tour operator to see if we could get onto Chumba Island, the most pristine coral reef and wildlife sanctuary ... read more

Africa » Benin » South » Porto-Novo August 18th 2006

I am happily exhausted. Guillaume, Derique, and my mosquitoes have welcomed me back into my home. I spent the entire past week entertaining fifty girls, 10-14 years old, in Porto Novo, Benin. I have a t-shirt to prove it. I love that age group, and I had so much fun translating time-killing games and playing endlessly. Follow-the-leader, Simon Says, Heads-up, Seven-up, Charades, we even translated the B-I-N-G-O song. Aïchath, Elisabeth, Gisele, Imelda, and I left Sunday, July 2, for Camp GLOW. We had to wait for a taxi- the chauffeur I had found did not arrive, so I had to track down another automobile. The car ride was wonderful. Only one of the girls had been to Cotonou, and only barely at that, so I often heard, “Are we there yet? How much farther? Where are ... read more

Well I can safely say it did not take long to swing back into travel action after touching down in Cairo late Thursday night. My plane was an hour late, and there was evidently some mix-up with my ride from the airport. What kind of mix-up? Nobody showed up. I was extremely tired. For some reason after getting my watch back in Zanzibar the alarm no longer wakes me up. It has to be the quietest alarm on earth. So in fear of missing my flight, I basically just didn't sleep the night before. After finally landing in Cairo I was on little sleep and consequently out of patience with the guys at the airport trying to sell me a cab, a shuttle or whatever. I finally folded though since I had no other way downtown. ... read more
