History doesn’t repeat itself, it rhymes. (Mark Twain) Greetings from South Africa. We are still in Johannesburg, for a week as of yesterday, and it is beautiful. We have been busily looking for opportunities and trying to talk with people, even with the internet down for 3 days and the cell phone snafus. Our phone can apparently receive international calls but not make them until we switch from a prepaid service to a contract service, which requires an address. Also, the service is spotty in this country. We plan to use Skype for international calls (phone calls over the internet), and I have been told that if you are also on the Skype network, we may be able to make calls for free. We are occasionally having translation issues, which is to be expected, even in ... read more

Well Arrived in Port St Johns to a hostel called Amapondo. Port St Johns is a place full of old hippies and the pace of life there is slower than a a drunk snail's. It's a really lovely little town with not much going on but is full of character - and characters! It was their holiday weekend when we were there, so lots of festivals and events were going on. I got talking to the owner of the hostel who was I think on his 10th joint of the evening, and he asked if I was a sporty type of person. Wondering how he could have known that I was, I was intrigued so told him I play the odd game of tennis and hop on the mountain bike now and again. In response he ... read more

Ok, the day started at 5am and we headed straight for sand dune 24 or 48- the number eludes me right now but it was scary looking! It was far steeper than yesterday’s sunset one and the ridge that I, and about 50- 100 other tourists, had got up to walk across was narrow to say the least. My pictures from this bit of the tour are pretty spectacular. It was also bloody freezing and windy but still we began this awesome climb. It was tricky, when you stopped to rest for a moment as you had to stand as far left or right of the ridge as possible to you could let other people pass but on several occasions I either helped some poor person who began to slip dangerously quickly down the dune or ... read more

The following are stories of children at Vihiga Children's Home in Western Kenya, where I am volunteering for 3 months, under the auspices of Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church (Kentucky, USA). The stories are factual; surnames have been omitted. Brian's Life: Brian is 7 years old and a pupil in standard two. He and his twin brother were born to a woman and man who soon parted. The children's mother returned the babies to the father who then reconciled with his previous wife. Brian suffered from marasmus and kwashiorkor; his twin was more robust. Neither the father nor his wife accepted the children. When the boys were three years old, the father tied them outside at night in the cow stall. His plan was to let the cows stomp them to death. The cows would not harm ... read more

After an eventless flight, we arrived in Nairobi, or Nai-Robbery as it is informally known as. We stayed at a place called Nairobi Backpackers, and it was a great place to get things rolling in Africa. It was mega chilled out, and even though it was hot, they had a bon fire going every night, where everyone chilled out and drank Tusker beer. We liked the place. Nairobi itself didn't seem to have a lot to offer, so the next day we went out and organised a 4 day safari to the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru. We went with a company called Planet Safari. They seemed a bit dodgy, but then again, most companies out here selling safari's seem that way. That night it was time to hit the restaurant that had been making Chris' ... read more

Today we ventured to see the famous Leptis Magna, we would have to say one of the best (if not 'THE' best) roman ruins we have seen in all our travels. Only 30% of the ruins have been excavated, with the other 70% remaining under thick vegetation, which is quite incredible. On first sight of Leptis Magna it is huge, yet to imagine that what you see is only part of the massive city right on the mediterranean is just facinating. Most of the excavation was done by Italian soldiers during their occupation and the Libyan government is now undergoing attempts to uncover and remove some of the vegetation by 2008. The cost to excavate is massive, so how long this will take and whether there is funding set aside for this will be a 'wait ... read more

Hey, finally we wrap up our Mediterranean trip in here in Cairo. Egypt is definitely an interesting country to visit, and for the first time I experience a real desert. We started our excursion in Alexandria, through the Egyptian custom, then found our way to El Cairo, and finally to Giza to see the obligatory great pyramids and my new buddy Sphinx. We're heading back to the States tomorrow, and I can't wait to be leasurely sitting in a properly air-conditioned athmosphere. I know, I sound like a spoiled lil bird, but what can I say? See you all back in Atlanta! Sign off for now. -Cy... read more
