Laid low by a cold for much of my first week, I’ve managed to spend a full ten days in Nairobi - an accomplishment that, I’m certain, will warrant a commemorative t-shirt before I go. Back on my feet at last, shaking a metaphorical fist at the gray winter skies, I pack my bags for a week in the bush - a stay with a Maasai chief who, incidentally, has a profile on CouchSurfing. When I tell Khadija, the receptionist at my hostel, that I’m heading to Narok in the afternoon, she shakes her head and says, “You’re going to the middle of nowhere.” When I tell her my final destination is actually twelve kilometers from there, a strange silence passes between us: a moment that snugly fits into the space between ominous and foreboding. I’ve ... read more

Well, we have just finished our week with the vet school at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania (about 3 hours by road west of Dar es Salaam). Since Andrew didn't talk about it, I'll briefly mention our trip in from Dar- on one of those buses that you really ought not to take- by then we were pretty desperate to get on any bus due to a 3-4 hour late arrival in Dar. We did arrive intact though, and it wasn't as sketchy as I thought it would be (I was just happy to get here). Morogoro is a bustling little town, at the foot of some mountains, which makes it picturesque. The people here speak mostly swahili (it's not a tourist town quite yet), so we've been trying to pick some up, ... read more

It's funny...since I have been here, I have not really done any typical "Social Work" then this week, two seperate things happened...let me explain... On the very first day of school back in January, I was being a typical teacher and having the kids go around and introduce themselves, but before they went, I told them about me. "I'm from Philadelphia, I'd been living in California, I like to run, bike, swim and I am a Social Worker." That was really the last time I have said anything about Social Work and since then, I am strictly known as a "teacher," so I sort of thought they had all forgotten about that. So, last week I was working late at school and I came home around 6pm, tired and hungry and there were two woman waiting ... read more

When you decided to become a Christian, what did that decision cost you? Earlier this week I had another Bible study with an elderly woman that I've been studying with over the past several weeks. This woman lives several hours away, near the coast, but she has been staying with family here while having some medical needs addressed. This week we covered "Counting the Cost." One of the concerns that this woman has is her ability to worship once she returns home. You see, there is no New Testament church anywhere near her home. Also, this woman is not able to read, so she cannot study the Bible independently. She seems determined to become a Christian, but she understands that there may be some difficulty involved as a result. Another scenario - Jenny recently studied ... read more

We’re now 12 hours South of Marsa Alam. Apparently, some guy knocked on our door around 5am. All I know is that Ryan was shaking me around 6, and told me to make it to the Saloon before our morning briefing. (It’s 10 to 6 right now on the 14th and I can’t think very well… So, it’s hard for me to make this stuff funny). We did 4 dives on the 13th. So, now I’m pretty much a dive master; I have 10 under my belt and counting! I found Nemo again today, he was being guarded again by his parents who were a little more intimidated by my huge presence (I’ve been wearing this sweet wet suit that exposes my guns. It’s been nice. But, since I switched to the bigger tank - ... read more

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all your messages! it really means the world to me! the last few days have been very eventful. So you know how clumsy i am right? and how bad things always seem to happen to me? Well my bad luck obviously doesnt end just in North America! 2 days ago, i was at the school and lifting a bench and something bit me. Dont know what it was but instantly, my finger swelled like a balloon. I was terrified. I could hardly move it it was soooo swollen! the head mistress rushed me over and rubbed some sort of cream on it. Within the following hours the swelling did eventually go s\down, although movement was still somewhat difficult. Then, to top that one off, the next day, i was ... read more

Well, we were in South Africa up until last night. I worked on the pictures on our way to the Johannesburg airport and had to leave the details until our arrival in Egypt. We are now in Luxor after a very long and exhausting journey. 4 hours of car to Joburg followed by waiting at the airport and a 7 hour night flight to Cairo!! Just shows you how huge Africa is! Once in Cairo we found out that our flight to leave in one hour (8am) was changed to 9pm!! Not good news for weary travellers! Anyway, we talked our way onto a noon flight and found a spot to squat until boarding. We are now in Luxor and have one night in a hotel before we get on our cruise down the Nile. ... read more

From time to time we are asked over to have dinner in homes of our Tanzanian Brethren and we love sharing this time of fun and family fellowship. A normal meal will consist of beans, rice, chapati, and some form of vegtables... greens or a mixture of other foods together... This week with the Rachels being here we had all been invited over to two different homes. The home of Josphpat & Anna Massawe and their 3 children and Elijah & Mama Judy's home with their 3 children as well, which is the house behind John Hall's home. Each one of the families were very gracious and hospitable in feeding our large families and its such a humbling and honorable experience to know what they have sacrificed in order to have you in their homes. ... read more

Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali July 12th 2007

So, the movie Hotel Rwanda is based on Hotel des Milles Collines ( a thousand hills because Rwanda is the land of a thousand hills). But, it is one of the swanky hotels in Kigali and has received new found success and popularity after the movie, kind of wierd, I know. But, they have free live music and karaoke by their pool on thursday nights and I think I may be attending. It is strange that this hotel is one of the most populat places in town, as a hotel and as just a hang out place (they have a pool) because of everything that has surrounded it. But, if you think about it this is one of the most hopeful places in the city because this is one of the only places where there weren't ... read more
