We'd left the hostel at Hluhluwe early in the afternoon, crossed the boarded into Swaziland and by nightfall arrived at the hostel - a few km off the 'main' road, down a bumpy unsealed track and seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The hostel I stayed at, Sondzela Backpackers, is within the Mlilwane wildlife reserve itself and turned out to be one of my favourites - located in a beautiful, tranquil setting everyone here was really friendly, and for a small additional cost you get a great meal each night (including a veggie option!!), cooked by the staff outside over an open fire!! I spent a great few evenings here sat round the bonfire, drinking beer, chatting to random people and generally chilling out - by day though there was lots of exploring to do. Unlike ... read more

Hello from Tanzania We have not posted in some time and this one unfortunately will be brief. After taking a few days off at an undisclosed location we have returned to the mainland and are now in Morogoro, Tanzania. It is about three hours West of Dar es Salaam if that helps. Not much here despite it being a relatively large town but there is a veterinary college. We are spending the week at Sokoine University of Agriculture at there veterinary school (the only official one in Tanzania). It is much smaller than OVC as classes range from 60 to 17 members. More on that after we are done here. As of today only two weeks to go. Seven weeks have gone by very quickly. - Andrew ... read more

Go grab a copy of "Irresistable Revolution." Seriously, go out right now and grab it. Christianity in Mississippi seems dominated by people who really would affirm that the Bible is the inspired word of God. What if Jesus really meant what He said, then? Really, check out the book. Gregg, order several copies for the bookstore. No, really, go get the book.... read more

Going back around a month since I last wrote, I went to Zanzibar for 5 days and had a really fun time. I was a bit worried about what it would be like going by myself but I met the friendliest fellow travelers. I ended up hanging out a lot with 3 people from Spain and two people from Australia, as long as people from the US, Canada, the UK, Mexico…I went to 2 islands and went snorkeling twice, saw some giant tortoises, spent a little time on the beach, walked around Stonetown, saw gorgeous water and sunsets and went on a tour of a spice plantation. After that I flew to meet my mom in Arusha for a 6 day safari in Tanzania—in Arusha Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater (which was FREEZING when we ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Mwanza July 11th 2007

well we had an excellent few days here in mwanza. it was nice to get away from the village and see some action for a few days! haha but it wasn't all vacation, we did have a meeting with AMREF yesterday about setting up our HIV/AIDS peer education group. we're hoping to get enough $$ together to send a few people from the village to Dar Es Salaam (capital of Tanzania, 30hrs by train) for 4 weeks of training so they can return to Nyamuswa and focus on counselling and educating the people there. There are so many rural areas that just don't have the resources to help all the people in need. But most of the people would like such a thing to happen. so we'll see what we can manage. hopefully this is something ... read more

Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali July 11th 2007

So, I decided that I would give a little bit more information about my time in Kigali, as it is limited. WE have not done many like super interesting things this week so far because we have had some lectures and have done papers and research, etc which is interesting to me because duh, i'm studying that but, not really that interesting to hear about. Today was interesting though, we went to this organization Women for Women which is doing wonderful things for women in Rwanda, among other countries. I really believe in the empowerment of women and encouraging women in business. I think I am surrounded by such successful and intelligent women like my mom, my grandmothers and all of my aunts that it is really easy for me to see how women have the ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Coast Province » Mombasa July 11th 2007

It's the final countdown... Last weekend, as a special treat, I stayed overnight at the orphanage with the kids. They absolutely loved it and even gave me my own bed (quite a few of them sleep on mattresses on the floor). We were served dinner of ugali and vegetables and we all ate the traditional Swhaili way - with our fingers! I brought along popcorn and biscuits for pudding which they all gratefully finished off with no hesitation! After a bit of tv watching and clearing up we all went into the corridor where some of the kids sang worship songs and the rest of us danced! Then there was a prayer time where everyone had a private few moments to pray. It was bed time by 9:45pm! Breakfast was at 7am though so I ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Luxor July 11th 2007

Well I was up early again this morning to join my motorcade to Luxor four short, cramped hours and I was there, I headed for the Hostel and checked my stuff, before heading out to explore the Luxors East Bank. Luxor and its surrounding area contains almost 80% of Egypts ancient treasures. The city itself is an enormous open air museum, and tourists have been coming here since antiquity, It was seemingly as much on the Greek and Roman world tour as it is in the 21st century, as many of the monuments are not onlky adorned with heirogliphyics but also ancient greek and latin grafitti. Although Luxor is most famous for its pharonic architectural monuments, its name is inherited from its muslim occupation as the actual name Luxor derives from the Arabic for palace: ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Lake Nakuru NP July 11th 2007
