Mel, The African Discovery AdventureMel Grice Here's to hoping all things happen in three's!! 1. Chicken Food Poisoning 2. Mushroom Food Poisoning 3. MALLARIA 4. there better not be, or I’m getting a helicopter off this continent! So why go to Africa without experiencing everything, that’s my theory. So to put it into practice i was fortunate enough to pay the lovely hospital another visit. This time things were a little more scary as Mallaria's not something you really wanna play around with. Although if nipped in the butt early it can pass without too much trouble. However stubborn Mel, who thought it would pass without visiting hell (thats my nickname for the hospital) prolonged getting treatment. Well needless to say that turned out to be a big mistake. Mallaria takes over your whole body, and ... read more

Firstly I start this blog with an Obiturary...of sorts. Today marks the end of whatever relationship Tati and myself still had; in retrospect giving the girl the address of the travelblog on which I detail my conquests and attempted conquests wasn't a great idea. Annoyingly Tati's defection from my list of subscribers has also cut my number of female subsribers in half...which is a blessing in disguise as I believe it is that particular sex which would find more sympathy with Tati, and far more fault with my actions. This is a hint that I expect messages expressing sympathy and bewilderment, at Tati thinking I have done any wrong, from my male readers lol Anyway on with the story. After seeing Anne off, my train stood at Tabora well passed the 9am departure time I was ... read more

Good news and bad news! Good news is as above stated in the title.. bad news is that I won't be able to catch Mr Melvin Ng leaving for his Beijing posting in mid-June... Was initially thinking if i can't get the namibian visa, then i'd probably head south from Zambia to Zimbabwe and then straight into South Africa.. and then I'd probably arrive home somewhere before the 16th, when Mel will be flying off.. so looks like my return date is still set on the 26th.. Sorry Mel.. but i'd be visiting you some time in BJ i guess.. Huang Zong! After two long days on the road.. I'm now in Lusaka.. Crossing the Malawi-Zambian border is relatively ok.. but I think the Zambian officers are a bit more picky.. and can make things difficult.. ... read more

Woa! Quest trip over! Feels like it flew by! It's been the most fantastic experience and if I could do it all again I would. SO what's happened in Zambia? We arrived at a place in Livingstone called Fawlty Towers backpackers on the 2nd May, where we were faced with SO many options of activities that are run around the falls (Livingstone is next to Victoria Falls). Unfortunatly due to unavoidable ATM trouble - in that NONE in Livingstone accepted my card, I could only do the one activity - the bungy! Still can't quite believe I did it! It took me a long time to take the plunge, alot of fretting on the edge was involved! It's the worst feeling having your feet so tightly bound and having to hop to the edge of an ... read more

Do you remember that time when I mentioned that I lived in a city called Kitwe and worked for an organization called ZATAC? Yeah, so that’s not so accurate any more. It’s a fairly long and boring story, but basically the situation was that the EWB-ZATAC partnership on this project was such that EWB (i.e. me) wasn’t in a position to be able to add much value to the project. First, the project was struggling with a variety of factors beyond my (and in many cases, ZATAC’s) control. In addition, ZATAC was more interested in me playing more of a gap-filling as opposed to a value-added role, which is not EWB’s focus. It was an amicable break-up, though. I still keep in touch with my friends at ZATAC and will be taking a trip up ... read more

Today, March 1st, is EWB Day. EWB chapter members all across Canada will be pulling off fantastic feats of outreach to promote this year's EWB Day theme: Be Change. Please go to playyourpart.ca to show your support and learn more about it. In commemoration of EWB Day, here is a short story about beer and integration in Zambia. "Chibuku Shake Shake: The One that Gives You Respect." That's the tagline to my favourite TV commercial. It's for a locally brewed Zambian beer. The premise of the commercial is that real men drink Shake Shake. Men of respect drink Shake Shake. And even if you're not a man of respect, pretend that you are - by drinking Shake Shake. I must admit it, though - it took me almost eight months to try the local brew. Shameful ... read more

I spent 2 1/2 days working in Lusaka from February 6-9. Although I didn't do anything special, it was personally interesting to visit the city again after 20 years. While living for three years in Nairobi in the mid 1980s, I visited Lusaka several times in conjunction with my work. My overall impression is that the Zamiban economy is doing better now than it was the last time I visited. The country seems to be getting more foreign investment than previously which is evident in many new buildings and businesses. I stayed in the Intercontinental Hotel where I had usually stayed in the 1980s. It is still the same basic hotel, but an outdoor restaurant, swimming pool and fitness center have been added, making for a much more pleasant stay. Some of the change in Zambia ... read more

D: Hi, I’m Danielle. I’m Mike’s newly acquired Zambian-Adventure Buddy, via way of a mutual friend. Not to confuse folks, I’m actually from Virginia and just moved to Lusaka from Boston to do HIV research. I will be periodically interjecting to add spice to this blog. Hope you don’t mind! We have returned to Lusaka having survived the four-day canoeing safari on the lower Zambezi River. Yes, I said “WE.” In some strange twist of fate Danielle decided that having never been camping or canoeing before she should blow off work and try both at the same time. Some call it crazy, she said it was baptism by fire. But since I said “we” returned, I guess it wasn’t so bad. Though I had many threats on my life but we will get to those. D: ... read more
