Muli Mutya everyone! Sorry that it has been a while since my last entry. Since I wrote last I moved in with my host family, the Kiggunu's. They live in the Ntinda neighborhood of Kampala, just one of the many hills here! They are so sweet! My father is James, he is a computer scientist, I think he has his own business, not sure though. My mother is Julian, she works for the South African High Commission in their offices. Their oldest is a girl, Maaso, 20, her name means big eyes...it was a nickname given to her by her grandfather. Then there is Trevor, 8, he is so bright and is an excellent artist. Every night when I get back from school he is drawing a picture -many are of fighters and jet powered cars...oh ... read more

It’s been about two weeks since I’ve last had access to a computer and it feels pretty good to be back behind a keyboard! I’m currently sitting on a balcony facing the Nile River in Jinja, Uganda. The city is found on the northern tip of Lake Victoria, has a population of close to 3 million and boasts to be “the Source of the Nile”. There are Nile crocodiles along the river banks and fishermen in modest, wooden boats gliding along peacefully. While we arrived in Jinja yesterday, the bulk of my time these past couple of weeks had been practicing field research techniques in Kibale National Forest, a mid-elevation rainforest situated East of the Rwenzori Mountains and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kibale is an “island forest” as it’s surrounded by converting land and ... read more

Hello! Can't believe another week has passed already, time has really started to fly! Actually have this Saturday off for a change so we can get stuff done like go to the bank. We were only having Sundays off but everything is closed so it was pretty useless. Last Saturday at backpackers was great. Dinner, a tab at the bar (so drank for about 7hrs!!) and the room for night all came to the equivalent of 15 quid. What a bargin. And the food was really good - homemade chips and burgers, just what I needed. Felt pretty rough the next day amd a hang over in the equatoral sun is not the most pleasant feeling so spent most of Sunday on the sofa before venturing out to lunch at a cafe in Jinja, then getting ... read more

CAUTION: riddled with spelling errors, i think...i'm a terrible speller and this thing doesn't let you spell check! So today we were given a partner and a subject to learn about in our an field study exercise called a drop-off. I was partnered with Kati and very intelligent, talkative girl from Ohio who goes to school at Sarah Lawarence. Our subject was Religion. We thought this task might be a difficult one because we were unsure of how open Ugandan's would be on this subject. So we headed out from our hotel and decided to walk towards a huge Mosque that I had seen on my very first morning out. I had asked one of our directors about this Mosque and she told me that it had just been built and was yet to be opened. ... read more

Got in late last night to Entebbe (where the airport it). The flights were long -all in all I had three layovers, 20 some hours of flying and a 40min ride in to Kampala...so you can imagine how numb my butt was and stiff my legs were! :) My luggage didn't make it through though...they don't know where it is (I've talked to them this morning and they haven't tracked it down yet). Hopefully it will finds it's way here...otherwise I'll have to become creative with what I've got! Kampala is a beautiful city: very lush and green, deep red soil...very polluted though, your throat burns as you walk down the street. I woke up this morning around 4:30 and finally got out of bed and wondered the city around 7am (all by myself!). I felt ... read more

So I did end up doing the full day white water rafting, it was AMAZING!!!!! It's been four days and i'm STILL sore!! But it's awesome, a pain that i worked for :o) I have bruises all over my knees and shins, a nasty burn on my shoulders, and just about every muscle in my body hurts, not to mention i think I managed to sprain my ankle and thumb - wheeeee! Seriously though, it was so cool. I would do it again in a heartbeat! (now that i'm somewhat recovered of course) There are no pictures of the actual rafting, for the obvious reason that I couldn't take my camera onto the rapids. Even if i'd had a waterproof camera - it would have gotten lost for sure! I only fell out of the raft ... read more

Today was the first time that I met Fred's mom. The visit went well. I had my first taste of Jack fruit as well as a nice visit with Fred's mom Margie and brothers Solomon and David. Fred's grandmother also stopped by for a quick visit. We travelled back to the hospital via taxi. Back at the hospital we had dinner and then spent a quiet evening at home playing cards with Fred's cousin, Emily (who is also a doctor) A very low key day!... read more

Hello. Just a thought I do a quick entery as I have some time left after uploading those pics. Had a fantastic day on Sunday at Bujagali Falls. We met up with the volunteers on the Health Education Programme and just spent the day day chilling by falls. Had a picnic packed up for us and drank plenty of beers - making the most of that fact that they were actually chilled for a change! It was so nice after being cooped up on the farm for a week, everyone is finding it pretty intense! This week has been even more intense, not sure how were going to cope for another 3 and 1/2 weeks!! The style of teaching is so different here in Uganda. Its perfectly ok to laugh at us 'muzungo' (anyone white) whether ... read more

You can be forgiven for not having heard of this mountain range because it seems few people have. But I don't know why. It is the highest mountain range in Africa, containing Africa's third highest peak, and has the biggest ice caps left on the continent. Since the mountain range straddles the equator they get a lot of sun, and being downwind of the Congo basin, also a lot of rain. Consequently the vegetation is really bizarre. There are are forests of heather six metres high, giant lobelia and lots of other plants that look familiar but are enormous. So bugs and animals that usually eat them are scaled up as well. Overall you get the feeling that you are trekking somewhere like Middle Earth. There are jungle elephants here too, but we only saw the ... read more

"Weelaba" (pronounced way-la-bah) means farewell or good-bye in Lugandan...I wish I had inquired about the word(s) for "until next time..." because I know this is not "good-bye" and I will return again. The sun rose this morning painting the sky in beautiful hues of pink and orange. I, unfortunately, was too busy running around the house trying to collect the last of my belongings to sit and enjoy the sunrise...bummer! I was able to get a good picture of it just before we pulled away from the house to head for the airport. Lake Victoria was particularly beautiful this morning as the sun's rays, though partially hidden by clouds, danced on the water's surface...this too will leave a indelible impression in my mind. I am looking forward to the day when I return to this place...looking ... read more
