How did the time fly so quickly? African time is supposed to be slower than American time...and yet I find myself already on my last day here! I knew leaving would be hard...so, now I'm looking for a chance to come back...hopefully in July (as I have some friends who might be making the trip as well, so it would be good to travel w/them). On my last day, I got up at 6am to try and catch the sunrise before I left Uganda...since, let's face it I didn't see it rise on any other morning, I should make time for it on my last day, right? Well, I sat outside (braving the mosquitos) for over 30 minutes, but I never saw the sun rise...it was a cloudy / rainy morning!!! This is what I get ... read more

Hello! Have finally found an internet cafe remotely faster then a snail so thought it was about time I actually let you all know how I'm getting on! Am adapting to the Ugandan way of life pretty well actually. Everything is so slow here!!! We arrived here on Wednesday 10th, early morning. There was a whole bunch of us. 3 Americans and 5 English flew together from Heathrow and met up with 3 Australians when we got here. We flew into Entebbe which is right on the shores of Lake Victoria. It was amazing landing in such a mass of green!! From there we were taken to Jinja about an hour away where we met up with the Ugandan volunteers (there's about 14 of them) where we stayed at a parish community centre untill Saturday. We ... read more

Faith and I went shopping in Kampala today...we took public transportation - a taxi. While taking a taxi is not something I've done very often at home, it is very much a way of life for the locals. Taxis are like mini vans which hold approximately 20 people - I was grateful that we got to sit in the front. So, after about an 45 minutes of stopping every couple of blocks, we finally made it to Kampala. However, the taxi driver dropped us off further than we actually wanted to go, so we walked back through Kampala in search of "African Village" so I could do some souvenir shopping. We only had a couple of hours to go shopping, so it was frustrating that it took us 30 minutes to make our way back to ... read more

**The pictures in this blog are random and may not relate to the content of this blog!** While in Uganda, I was to assist Shannon in the final stages of planning for a pastors' conference. So, during my last week here I spent a lot of time working on rooming lists, step-up schedules, last minute detail stuff, etc. Everything was going smoothly and we were on-schedule until Wednesday when, out of the blue, the Bishop decides to cancel the conference. Despite several conversations, interventions and endless hours of prayer, the Bishop would not change his mind and so the conference never materialized. However, some good things did come out of all the drama: some land issues were finally settled, SOS Ministries is going to work at being established as an NGO (non-governmental organization) and the true ... read more

Luckily, the roads in Uganda appear to be much much better - like driving on silk! :o) The only downside is all that redish browish dust flying everywhere... i blew my nose tonight and it was pretty dirty up there!! lol I dont have time to right much, and no USB hookup, so unfortunately no pics, i just wanted to say "HEY I"M IN UGANDA!!!!!!" and let my mom know that i'm ok! I like Uganda a lot more than Kenya, not sure why... maybe just because its more tropical (ie. warmer!!) than Kenya was. Anyhoo, we're chilling out in Kampala tomorrow, then off to some lake somewhere, THEN we go into Rwanda to track the gorillas!!! So excited!!!! Border crossing was a little nerve wracking today, but no problems. I hope Rwanda isn't a problem ... read more

I headed into the city center for the first time on December 27th. I went in to town by Boda Boda with Muireann. She negotatiated a price for us and off we where on this small dirt bike like mode of transportation. For those of you who know me, I am petrified of motorcycles so I held on for dear life. They driver was fairly tame....just weaving in and out of traffic, on the shoulder, on the sidewalk...wrong side of the road, you name it! Once in town we headed to change money...the streets were very crowded with cars, motorcycles, bikes, livestock, people, and taxis. Crossing the streets was scary....you have to have good timing and just run as fast as you can. We headed to Muireann's work place, "Uganda Crafts". I bought many souvenirs here ... read more

I was whisked off early in the morning. We headed down a bumpy country road to a botanical gardens. It was an amazing day. We sat on a cliff over looking Lake Victoria, watching fisherman and boaters as well as wildlife. We took a walking tour of the gardens seeing many different species of trees and Colobus monkeys. The sights were amazing...unfortunately I forgot my camera! We headed from the gardens to the Beach Resort for a swim and lunch. Lunch was fish and chips...sounds like home....not quite. The fish was a talapia and it was the WHOLE fish. It was deep fried and served with a BBQ like sauce. The sight of the whole fish frightened me but I had planned to try anything presented to me so I was in. No cutlery....fingers only. The ... read more
