We've finally made it to the Backpackers Hostel, Kampala! Our flight was late taking off, and there was significant turbulence over the Med, but nothing intrepid explorers cannot handle. Entebbe is right on Lake Victoria and it was an amazing sight landing there. Lovely Phil was at the airport (a small affair, soon to be refurbed) to meet us, having waited over an hour, and we piled our bags onto the roof of a cool, red African bus. It took a little over an hour from Entebbe to Kampala; we stopped to change money in a very smart bank where there were men with various sorts of gun, and someone also arranged a block purchase of local SIM cards. The blue skies are full of Marabou Stork and a large, fringe-winged vulture I cannot accurately ... read more

Friday March 30, 2007 * Apologies if I am repeating some of what Celeste wrote in the previous blog Village life We have been living in the village for 4 ½ weeks know, yes time does fly. In this short period of time we have both grown to feel more and more comfortable and familiar with our surroundings. Our hut has acquired a handy bookshelf a few wall hangings and a mirror. We have worked out were to get the best meals from, and familiarized ourselves with the numerous modes of transport available and how much one should pay for each. Hello Muzungo, How are you? Hello Muzungo how are you, is a question we both get with great regularity, mainly from children but not exclusively. Muzungo basically means white person and there aren’t that ... read more

Well hello, April has brought wonderful things already. This month has potential to be incredible, busy and challenging. There is a new volunteer working at MACRO with me for the month. Her name is Joanna. She is Canadian and a sweet, sweet girl. Tomorrow we are going to a village together and doing a camp for two days and then headed to Kysanga (south west Uganda) for Orphans Day at this organization called House of Hope. The Real Uganda (My host NGO) just recently started supporting HOH. It is a school and an orphanage for children who have lost their parents to HIV. She has half the school built and becuase of the volunteers here she now has the money to build the dorms and get the kids tested for HIV. 25 out of 70 ... read more

Hello! Think I left off where we were being escorted to the taxi by the police in Gesengyi! From here we just wanted to get the hell out of Rwanda so crossed the border to Kabale back in Uganda. Here we stayed at lake Bunyoni - a massive lake in the mountains with 27 islands. We stayed on a little island called Byoona Amargara (a secrect hideway not in the travel guides!). Its a community development type place - absolute paradise! We had to paddle for 50mins in a dug out canoe to get there but it was well worth it! Fantastic views of the lake with towering volcanoes, sun, beer amd great food. Its also one of the few lakes you can swim in without getting Bilharzia!- so Ian did laps of the island before ... read more

Hi, I want to share with you something really incredible that happened to me last night. Bear with me here. Over the last few months, I have filled page after page in my journal about knowing that there was a big realization coming. It rested heavily within me. I was un-balanced and I felt like there was a hole within me that needed to be filled. I desperately searched to fill that void. I asked myself every possible question and looked deeply for the answers but nothing came. I felt like a giant, apathetic blob. Everything that was happening around me, I could evaluate and know what I would have felt if I could feel anything. I felt nothing. I knew how I should have felt in certain situations and I acted upon how I ... read more

Its Saturday morning, and I have finally found time to fill you all in! 2 weeks ago now, I was asked to do a lesson for the health science class….on condoms! Having not taught a lesson before in the class room, and being a nervous public speaker, I made sure that I prepared myself for this one! So I walk into the room with over 100 students between the ages of 16-21 starring back at me…Mzungu Nurse! (white nurse!) So I talk to them about family planning (very important considering the average birth rate per Ugandan woman is 7.1 children!), common myths about condoms, how to store them and check the expiry date, their 98% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy, STD’s and HIV. And then the fun began….Juliet (the nurse) was armed with a banana in ... read more

Hello! Sorry its been so long. I haven't been into the city for the last month so I have rather a lot to fill you in on. A lot has happened since I last wrote. Each week has been getting busier and busier as we've slowly managed to reach out to more and more communities. A couple of you have been asking what it is I actually do in the community so I'll try and give you a run down of a typical week. Mondays I spend with Roy. We teach in the primary school in the morning and take a farmers group in the afternoon. On Tuesdays I do a Women's group with Doreen, on Wednesdays I teach in a Secondary school with Doreen, on Thursdays I take a farmers group with Roy and ... read more

So I'm extremely busy this week writing several papers and finalizing plans for the practicum. I don't have time to write up a long blog about my experience in eastern Uganda. But I can post pictures! So I will. I hope they will suffice. I'm leaving on Friday for Bushenyi for four weeks. I'll try to write from there, but otherwise expect to hear from me in a month. In the east we visited Sipi Falls, the city of Mbale, and lived with a rural family for three days. The falls were amazing, we were able to hike up/down to all three. We hiked down to the largest fall in the evening, with the trail lit only by lantern -very cool. My particular host family was very sweet. They consisted of three wives, a father, ... read more

Jebale Ko! Another week has passed and it leaves me resting alone in my house for a quiet night of reflection and seclusion. New emotions, ideas and people have all stopped by for tea in Mukono this week. Since this is Africa and nothing goes to plan, I did not go to a village this week. Instead, I spent the week visiting the local hospitals and the prison, rolling beads, making bracelets and teaching my first editing lesson. It was a week to develop some strong relationships with my Ugandan friends and to get to know my roommates a little better. I was given a clan name. I am Emma "Nakabko," a member of the white monkey clan....ahahha. As the week comes to a close, I am relieved to find myself alone in our compound while ... read more

Olyotya? Ahh yes, I have arrived. I am safe, healthy and for sure traveling on my own. Those words feel good coming out of my fingers. I came into the Entebbe airport a week and a half ago. Struggling to stay awake, I went to see a movie with the other volunteers. I saw blood diamond. If you have seen it, then you might realize that seeing it was a strange way to enter an African country, especially when you have jet lag so badly that you are half asleep during the movie. Those first few days/hours/I have no idea how much time passed were a blur. Glad that’s over. I think it was last Sunday that I first met with the director of the organization I work for. His name Travis, but everyone calls him ... read more
